The Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray is eligible to return from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list next week. But the Cardinals won’t activate Murray just yet as he is “weeks away” from playing, according to a recent report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Murray has been out since tearing his ACL back in December. While the 26-year-old player is considered to be progressing well in his rehab, the Cardinals are believed to be taking a cautious approach with their franchise quarterback.

Many believe that 2023 will be a “lost” season for the Cardinals due to Murray’s injury, the new coaching staff, and the fact that the team significantly rebuilt its roster. However, sources close to the organization say that Murray will still return to action once he is fully recovered.

Murray struggled in 2022, passing for 2,368 yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 11 games. The Cardinals went 3-8 with him as their starting quarterback.

With Murray out to start the 2023, the Cardinals turned to veteran journeyman Joshua Dobbs as their starter. Dobbs proved to be a solid game manager for Arizona, failing to put up eye-catching numbers but being efficient and taking care of the football. The 28-year-old player is completing 72% of his passes and has thrown for 549 yards and two TDs without a single pick in the first three weeks.

The Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray is “right on schedule” while working his way back from an ACL injury he suffered in December. This was revealed by the team’s new head coach Jonathan Gannon in a recent chat with the reporters.

“He’s doing great,” Gannon told reporters when asked about Murray. “He’s doing what he needs to do and right on schedule.”

The initial reports after Murray’s surgery suggested that the 25-year-old player won’t be back in time to start the 2023 season. Gannon didn’t confirm or deny this, saying that there is no timetable for the player’s return and that he will play when he’s “fully healthy.”

“I’m not going to put a timetable on that right now,” Gannon added. “Whenever Kyler is fully healthy to play, that’s when he’ll play.”

Kyler Murray arguably had his worst season as a pro in 2022, throwing for 2,368 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games. The Cardinals were 3-8 with him as a starter and finished the season with a 4-13 record.

After a disappointing campaign, the Cardinals’ ownership decided to fire head coach Kliff Kingsbury. After a lengthy search, they settled on Gannon, hoping the 40-year-old, who served as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator for the past two years, can get the franchise back to winning ways.

The Arizona Cardinals decided it was better to pay their star quarterback early than to risk returning to mediocrity in the position. The team just announced that they had signed Kyler Murray to a long-term extension that will keep the Pro Bowl signal-caller with the franchise for the foreseeable future.

The Cardinals didn’t share details of the deal but Murray, who has two years left on his rookie contract, reportedly signed for five more years. This will keep him under contract for at least through the 2028 NFL season.

Money-wise, the extension is worth $230.5 million, making Murray one of the best-paid players in the league. His $46.1 million annual salary trails only the Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers ($50.3 million), while $160 million guaranteed is only behind the amount Cleveland Browns gave Deshaun Watson ($230 million).

It isn’t often that teams give players a new deal after just three years, but the Arizona Cardinals didn’t really have a choice with Kyler Murray. The two-time Pro Bowler was pushing hard for the deal since the offseason started, and it appeared he is willing to enter a standoff with the franchise if his wishes are not met. The Cardinals had an option to drag things out and risk alienating him or have a happy camper in time for training camp. And expectedly, they picked the second option.

Since entering the NFL as the first overall pick in 2019, Murray compiled a 22-23-1 record as a starter while throwing for 11,480 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions. The Oklahoma product also added 1,786 yards on the ground and 20 rushing touchdowns.

The Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury doesn’t know where the contract standoff between the organization and quarterback Kyler Murray currently stands. However, he hopes the two sides can come to an agreement before the start of training camp.

“I’m praying before training camp,” said Kingsbury while talking with reporters during the first day of the Cardinals’ minicamp.

Kingsbury was then asked whether he thinks Murray would attend training camp if he doesn’t receive an extension.

“That’d be a Kyler question. But I, just personally — I’m being selfish here — would love for him to be there the first day of training camp,” he explained.

Kyler Murray still has two years on his rookie deal that will pay him $5.5 million in 2022 and $29.7 million in 2023. However, the Oklahoma State product doesn’t seem willing to wait much longer to get paid. Murray has asked Arizona for a new deal this offseason and is looking to get a contract that would make him one of the highest-paid QBs in the league.

Murray, who was a first overall pick in 2019, made Pro Bowl in the past two years. He was also an early MVP candidate in 2021 before fizzling out towards the end of the campaign. The 24-year-old still finished the year with 3,787 passing yards and 24 touchdowns. The Cardinals made the playoffs but were eliminated in the wild-card game by eventual Super Bowl champs Los Angeles Rams.

Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray is an accomplished athlete besides football, having successfully played baseball while in college. And while it isn’t unusual to see this on the college level, there have been few athletes that were able to simultaneously play both sports as pros. Well, it seems like Murray believes he will be one of them.

Murray was the ninth overall pick in 2018 MLB Draft by Oakland Athletics and seemed like he was destined for an MLB career. However, after a breakout season as a QB for Oklahoma Sooners, he ended up deciding to choose football and became the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. But that doesn’t mean he gave up from baseball completely.

Speaking with the Arizona Republic recently, Murray said that he thinks he could play in NFL and MLB at the same time.

“I think I could,” said Murray. “Athletically, I think, yeah, I could do it. I’ve been playing both my whole life. I would love to add that to the résumé.”

Still, the 22-year-old won’t be entreating this idea right now.

“I don’t understand why in sports they try to marginalize it,” he added. “They try to make you pick one and I get it, but we’ll see. I think it would be fun. Right now, though, I’m just focused on football.”

Kyler Murray had ups and downs in his rookie season with Cardinals, but ended up delivering a solid first-year campaign. Murray finished 2019 by passing for 3,722 passing yards and 20 touchdowns while adding 544 rushing yards and four rushing TDs.

On Thursday night, Arizona Cardinals selected Oklahoma’s quarterback Kyler Murray with the first overall pick in 2019 NFL Draft. Picking Murray means that Cardinals have taken QBs in the first round in two consecutive drafts, as they selected UCL’s Josh Rosen with the 10th overall pick in 2018.

Cardinals’ selection, which was widely rumored before the draft, will unite Murray with team’s new head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who unsuccessfully tried to recruit him at Texas Tech in 2015.

“This is where I wanted to be,” – said Murray on Thursday night. “I feel we can be very dangerous. He’s one of the best in the world at calling plays and (a top) offensive mind, so for me, I can’t wait to get up there with him. It’s been a long time coming, and I hope he feels the same.”

Kyler Murray started just one year in college and finished the 2018 season with 4,361 passing yards and 42 touchdowns. He also added 1,001 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in the process.

Murray was a highly regarded prospect coming into the draft thanks to his accuracy and ability to make plays with his feet.  There are concerns, however, whether he will manage to produce on the same level in the NFL considering he is only 5ft 10in tall.

With the second pick in this year’s draft, San Francisco 49ers took Ohio State’s defensive end Nick Bosa while New York Jets snatched Alabama’s defensive tackle Quinnen Williams with the third overall selection. Bosa and Williams were considered to be the best players available in this draft class.

Oakland Raiders decided to take Clemson’s defensive end Clelin Ferrell with the 4th overall pick, and followed that up by taking Alabama’s running back Josh Jacobs at 24 and Mississippi State’s safety Johnathan Abrams at 27.

Picking at No.6, New York Giants surprised the entire league and their fans by selecting Duke’s quarterback Daniel Jones, who was regarded as fourth best available QB. With the 17th pick, that they acquired from Cleveland Browns in Odell Beckham Jr. trade, Giants selected Clemson’s defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and then traded into the first round once again to take Georgia’s cornerback Deandre Baker.

Oklahoma Sooners’ quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray is entering the 2019 NFL Draft. Murray announced his decision on Monday through social media, writing: “I have declared for the NFL Draft.”  on his official Twitter profile.

This, of course, wouldn’t be anything strange if it was any other college football player. But in Murray’s case, things are a bit different since the 21-year-old was already poised for baseball career, being drafted ninth overall in the 2018 MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics and signing a contract with the team.

Kyler Murray’s decision to enter the NFL Draft, however, doesn’t mean that he has given up on baseball. He can use the football career as leverage in negotiating a bigger contract with the Athletics, who already explored the possibility of giving him more money. According to ESPN, Oakland received a permission from MLB to give Murray a major league contract, although he would start his career in their affiliate High-A Stockton.

The 2018 season was the first one for Kyler Murray as Sooners’ starting QB and he managed to use the opportunity in full. He finished the year with 4,361 passing yards and 42 touchdowns while also adding 1,001 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. While these numbers would propel the most other players to a first-round draft selection, NFL teams are a bit skeptical about how Murray’s game would translate to the pros due to his small stature.

Murray is only 5 ft 10 in tall, and he would be the shortest QB in NFL since Doug Flutie, who was around the same height. Still, Flutie ended up spending 11 years in the league and earning a Pro Bowl honors, so some desperate teams might end up spending a lower draft pick on Sooners’ prospect.

The Associated Press announced on Thursday that Oklahoma Sooners’ quarterback Kyler Murray is the recipient of their annual AP College Football Player of the Year Award. Murray becomes the second straight Sooners’ QB to win the award after current Baker Mayfield received the honors in 2017.

Kyler Murray, who was previously named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year for 2018, received 39 first-place votes and ended with a total of 145 points in the voting. Alabama’s QB Tua Tagovailoa finished second with 13 first-place votes and 117 points overall, while the third place went to Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. who received four first-place votes and had a total of 55 points. The interesting thing is that all three of them are also finalists for Heisman Trophy.

It’s humbling and an honor to be named AP Player of the Year, to be mentioned in the same realm as a lot of great players, a lot of hall of famers,” – said Murray. “It’s a special deal for me and hopefully I can continue to make my family and teammates proud.

After serving as a backup to Mayfield in 2017, Kyler Murray won the Oklahoma Sooners’ starting QB job for 2018 in the preseason. During his time as a starter, he completed 216 of his throws out of 306 attempted for 3,674 yards and 37 touchdowns. The 21-year-old also rushed for 853 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Despite the success in college football, Murray won’t play in NFL. Instead, he will play baseball professionally in 2019, after being selected ninth overall by the Oakland Athletics in 2018 MLB Draft.
