Free agent Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins has agreed to a four-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons. The deal is reportedly worth $180 million and comes with $100 million in guarantees.

The news about Cousins’ agreement with the Falcons was confirmed by the player’s agent, Mike McCartney, on social media.

Cousins spent the last six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, signing with the franchise in 2018. During that time, Cousins made three Pro Bowls while also leading the Vikings to two postseason appearances.

The Vikings reportedly had an interest in retaining Cousins but ended up deciding the price was too high for them. There were concerns about Cousins’ age, as he turns 36 in August, as well as his health, considering that he is returning from an Achilles injury he suffered in 2023.

“After significant and positive dialogue with Kirk and his representatives, we were unable to reach agreement on a contract that fits the short and long-term visions for both Kirk and the Minnesota Vikings,” Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said in a statement shared on Monday.

The Falcons were likely fine with the potential downsides of signing Cousins because it meant acquiring a franchise quarterback they haven’t had since Matt Ryan left in 2021. Atlanta started Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, and Taylor Heinicke under center in the past two seasons, but neither has proved to be a long-term solution.

Cousins, who spent the first six seasons in the NFL with Washington, has a 76–67–2 record as a starter. He completed 66.9% of his career passes while throwing for 39,471 yards, 270 touchdowns, and 110 interceptions.

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback Kirk Cousins isn’t too concerned about the trade rumors that have been surrounding him for the better part of the 2023 season. He just wants to improve the team’s disappointing 1-4 record.

Cousins has been a trade candidate for a while now, considering Minnesota’s poor performances and the fact that he is set to become a free agent next offseason. But during a chat with reporters earlier this week, the 35-year-old player said that he isn’t wasting time thinking about that.

“You know, I am just very focused on the Bears and going 1-0 this week,” Cousins said. “And anything else is not worth my time or energy or attention.”

The Vikings might be motivated to trade Cousins in order to get some draft compensation and position themselves to draft one of the QB prospects in a loaded 2024 NFL Draft. The team isn’t likely to bounce back this season, considering their star wideout Justin Jefferson will miss at least three weeks with a hamstring injury.

The issue for Minnesota is that they can’t simply move Cousins wherever they want. The veteran has a no-trade clause and can veto any deal that isn’t to his liking.

For his part, Cousins has played really well in the first five weeks. He is completing 67.2% of his passes while throwing for 1,498 passing yards and league-leading 13 touchdowns.

Kirk Cousins will lead the Minnesota Vikings offense for at least three more years. According to Pro Bowl quarterback’s agent, Cousins has agreed to a two-year extension with Vikings on Monday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Cousins’ new extension is worth $66 million, with $61 million being guaranteed. He still has one year left on three-year, $84 million deal he signed back in 2018.

Vikings signed Kirk Cousins two seasons ago as a free agent from Washington Redskins. The team decided to move on from Case Keenum, who led then in 2017 to the NFC Championship game, in the process, believing Cousins will get them over the hump.

Cousins posted big numbers in his first season in Minnesota, but the wins didn’t follow, and he was quickly labeled as a bust. Vikings decided to stick with him, and it paid off, as he bounced back in 2019 to silence his critics.

In the 15 games he played in 2019 regular season, Cousins led his team to 10-5 record while throwing for 3,603 yards, 26 touchdown passes, and just six interceptions. He was also solid in the playoffs, leading the Vikings to an upset win over Super Bowl contenders New Orleans Saints.

It’s obvious that Minnesota is encouraged by Cousins’ form in 2019, and is ready to run it back a few more years. The time will tell whether that was the right choice.

Even if Minnesota Vikings are having second doubts about the $84 million contract they gave quarterback Kirk Cousins back in 2018, they are not ready to show it just yet.

After having mediocre 2018, Cousins struggled through the first two games of 2019 NFL season. So far he completed just 52.4 percent of his passes for 328 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. However, Vikings’ head coach Mike Zimmer said that didn’t change the way he thinks about his franchise QB.

“He’s going to be fine,” – said Zimmer. “We have the utmost confidence in him. He’s in a good place where he’s going to play good this week and continue to play good for the rest of the year.”

Vikings managed to overcome Kirk Cousins’ struggles in Week 1 against Atlanta Falcons thanks to their rushing game and get a 28-12 win. In Week 2, however, Cousins missed some easy looks and had two interceptions which definitely made the difference in 21-16 loss to Green Bay Packers.

Despite Zimmer’s confidence in him, Cousins knows that he has to get out of slumps soon and start being the franchise QB Vikings are paying him to be.

“Believe me, I’m not going to be playing quarterback here if I go out and play the way I did this past Sunday for much longer,”- said, Cousins. “So I understand that, and I look forward to getting out there and playing at a much higher level.”

Cousins will get his chance to improve the impression on Sunday when Vikings meet Oakland Raiders at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Back in March 2018, Minnesota Vikings signed Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins to a three-year, $84 million contract, thinking he is the missing piece that will help them make a Super Bowl run. Nine months later, Vikings narrowly missed on playoffs and Cousins’ signing seemed like everything but a good decision. The 30-year-old QB himself is well aware of how people’s perception of him changed after a disappointing 2018 season, but he intends to do something about it in 2019.

Kirk Cousins recently made an appearance on Dan Patrick Show and was asked whether he considers his debut season in Minnesota to be a success.

“The short answer is no,” – said Cousins. “We didn’t make the playoffs. There were high expectations and we didn’t deliver, and so I’ve been frustrated since the season ended.”

Now, Cousins wants to “make amends” for 2018 and show that he is worth that big contract he received.

“I wish the 2019 season started tomorrow,” – he added. “I’m ready to go and make amends for 2018. It’s been frustrating to know I have to sit here for whatever it is, seven or eight months before we get back at it. It has been a tough January for me. I haven’t been sleeping well, that kind of a thing, because, yeah, it just left a bad taste in my mouth the way the season finished up.”

Kirk Cousins led the Vikings to 8-7-1 record in 2018, while completing 70.1 percent of his passes and throwing for 4,298 passing yards and 30 touchdowns.

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has finally made a decision about his future and officially signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings. He became the highest paid player in NFL history, getting a three-year, $84 million fully guaranteed contract. Cousins will also be able to earn extra $6 million in incentives.

After playing under the franchise tag for the Redskins in the past two years, Kirk Cousins became a free agent in this offseason and was the most sought player on the market. According to his agent Mike McCartney, the offer from the Vikings wasn’t even close to being the highest, but Cousin’s desire to play for a well-organized team prevailed.

As Rick (Spielman, Vikings GM) said yesterday, this is a lifetime deal,” – said Cousins. “That’s the goal. This is a three-year deal but the expectation from both sides is we raise our kids here and then if everything goes as planned that I’d be here for a long, long time.

Kirk Cousins became a starter for the Washington Redskins in 2015 NFL season and never missed a game since, passing for more than 4,000 yards per season in three consecutive years. This is what made teams go all in for the 29-year-old. Since the salary-cap era in NFL, only two proven veteran quarterbacks came to the market as free agents, Drew Brees and Payton Manning. The difference is that both of them had a previous history of injuries, while Cousins never had an injury that kept him off the field. This is why the Vikings decided to move on from Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford, and Case Keenum, and make Kirk Cousins their franchise quarterback.

If you have an opportunity to go out and potentially get a franchise quarterback or a quarterback that’s going to be leading you for years to come,” – said Spielman. “He’s right now in the prime of his career. Our history tells us if we hit on a player, we’re going to do everything we can to keep that player here. Especially at that quarterback position. That’s why this was so unique. The fully guaranteed part, I know it’s the first time, but also when you have an opportunity to get a potential franchise quarterback, you know where the leverage is going. We respected that and I respected that.
