Veteran running back Joe Mixon is staying with the Cincinnati Bengals. Mixon reportedly restructured his contract in a way that will make it more manageable for the team.

Mixon was set to earn $10.1 million in base salary in 2023 but had no guaranteed money on his deal. Considering he also carried a cap hit of $12.8 million, it was widely expected that the Bengals either move on from him or make some kind of agreement to lower the number.

The two sides opted for the latter, and Mixon will now earn a base salary of $5.5 million while being able to earn another $2 million in incentives.

Mixon’s agent Peter Schaffer later confirmed the contract restructure to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, saying that his client believes he can win a Super Bowl ring with the Bengals.

“Joe’s goal is to win a Super Bowl and play his career in Cincinnati, and this is the best way to accomplish these goals,” said Schaffer.

Mixon spent all of his six years as a pro with the Bengals. He rushed for 5,378 yards and 40 touchdowns during that time. The Oklahoma product’s best season in NFL came in 2021 when he rushed for 1,205 yards and 13 TDs while earning a Pro Bowl nod.

The Cincinnati Bengals have locked up their “bell-cow” for the next four years.

Running back Joe Mixon has received a four-year extension from the team, worth $48 million. Mixon was the team’s second-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft and was going to be a free agent in 2021 after the expiration of his rookie deal.

Obviously, he wasn’t going to get a contract in the range of the league’s best running backs, like Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey and Dallas’s Ezekiel Elliot who are making $15-16 million a year, but this is a good deal for both Mixon and the Bengals.

Even though he hasn’t really had a breakout season, Mixon has been a reliable starting running back that has shown that he can stay healthy and be productive.

Most NFL teams are very cautious about giving running backs big deals for logical reasons. Not only do running backs have the shortest careers because of the wear-and-tear that goes into the position, but it’s also fairly easy to find a good, if not great, running back in the later rounds of the draft.

Mixon also came into the offseason with very little bargaining chips on the table. While he ran for 1,168 yards and eight touchdowns in 2018, he only ran for 1,137 in 2019.

Granted, Mixon’s supporting cast was non-existent last year. The Bengals are hoping that the return of star receiver A.J. Green and the arrival of this year’s No. 1 draft pick, quarterback Joe Burrow, will lead to Mixon achieving his potential in 2020 and beyond.

Cincinnati Bengals’ running back Joe Mixon is about to get paid. According to the team’s director of players personnel Duke Tobin, Bengals are looking to keep Mixon long-term and want to extend his contract.

Mixon is entering the final year of his rookie deal that pays him around $1.3 million in 2020.

“Joe (Mixon) is an important part of our team. He’s a piece that we’d like to get extended and have around here a long time,” Tobin told Cincinnati Enquirer while hinting that Bengals might lock the 24-year-old even before Week 1 kicks off.

“Typically, our extensions have gotten done during camp at some point,” he added.

Joe Mixon had back-to-back 1,100+ rushing yards seasons in the past two years and emerged as one of the most dynamic young backs in the league. This gives Mixon leverage in negotiations, and he reportedly wants to use it to be one of league’s top eight highest-paid RBs. This would mean a yearly salary north of $8 million.

Mixon himself said on numerous occasions that he wants to stay in Cincinnati and sees a future for himself with the organization. However, he could easily change his mindset if Bengals don’t show him the money.

Cincinnati Bengals entered the 2019 NFL season hoping they could bounce back after three consecutive losing years. But just two games into the new season, this might seem like a failed mission. Bengals suffered two losses in their two opening games and haven’t exactly looked like a playoff-caliber team.

While there might be several reasons for Bengals’ poor start in 2019, including having a new head coach and injuries of several key players, their running back Joe Mixon decided to shoulder most of the blame.

While talking with reporters on Wednesday, Mixon said that he took the two losses personally as he didn’t perform at the level that was expected from him.

“I take it personally on me,” – said Mixon. “These two performances I’ve been displaying have been terrible. You call me the peon right now. I’ve got to go home and do some re-evaluating, some looking at the man in the mirror, which is me, and got to step up, making something happen.”

While it is debatable whether the losses should be put on Mixon, the fact is that he was well below his usual production in Weeks 1 and 2. In the season opener against Seattle Seahawks, he had six carries for 10 yards. Then, he followed that up with 11 carries for just 17 yards against San Francisco 49ers.

For comparison, Mixon rushed for 1,168 and eight touchdowns in 2018 while adding 43 receptions for 296 yards in just 14 games.

“It’s not the team, it’s me, honestly,” – he added. “I’m not being accountable to my teammates and making the plays I need to make. … I ain’t done nothing that I’m supposed to be doing. I’m not putting my team in a good position to win. I’ve got to step it up.”

Mixon will get the chance to bounce back this weekend when Bengals face Buffalo Bills.

Cincinnati Bengals managed to get their second straight win against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2, but this came with a price of losing their top running back Joe Mixon to an injury. Luckily, it seems like Mixon, who had arthroscopic surgery on his knee several days ago, will soon be back on the pitch.

While the first estimations said that Mixon would be sidelined for two to four weeks, the 22-year-old himself told reporters on Thursday that he is feeling “great” and that the return is up to him.

It’s my call” – Mixon responded when he was asked when he’ll return while adding that the decision will depend on his comfortability.

I’ve been trying to run, but they’ve been restricting me from doing that,” – he explained. “For the most part, right now just trying to maintain being in shape, just trying to do whatever I can working out, being on the bike, being consistent with showing up and doing rehab and things like that. I mean, just the little things like that with recovery, that’s what is going to get me to get back on the field and I’ll definitely continue to do that.

The news that Joe Mixon might be back sooner than expected certainly got Cincinnati Bengals excited due to lack of other options on the running back position. Mixon played a crucial role in the team’s great start of the season, rushing for 179 yards and a touchdown. He also added six receptions for 57 yards.
