Veteran running back Joe Mixon is staying with the Cincinnati Bengals. Mixon reportedly restructured his contract in a way that will make it more manageable for the team.

Mixon was set to earn $10.1 million in base salary in 2023 but had no guaranteed money on his deal. Considering he also carried a cap hit of $12.8 million, it was widely expected that the Bengals either move on from him or make some kind of agreement to lower the number.

The two sides opted for the latter, and Mixon will now earn a base salary of $5.5 million while being able to earn another $2 million in incentives.

Mixon’s agent Peter Schaffer later confirmed the contract restructure to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, saying that his client believes he can win a Super Bowl ring with the Bengals.

“Joe’s goal is to win a Super Bowl and play his career in Cincinnati, and this is the best way to accomplish these goals,” said Schaffer.

Mixon spent all of his six years as a pro with the Bengals. He rushed for 5,378 yards and 40 touchdowns during that time. The Oklahoma product’s best season in NFL came in 2021 when he rushed for 1,205 yards and 13 TDs while earning a Pro Bowl nod.

Cincinnati Bengals’ running back Joe Mixon is about to get paid. According to the team’s director of players personnel Duke Tobin, Bengals are looking to keep Mixon long-term and want to extend his contract.

Mixon is entering the final year of his rookie deal that pays him around $1.3 million in 2020.

“Joe (Mixon) is an important part of our team. He’s a piece that we’d like to get extended and have around here a long time,” Tobin told Cincinnati Enquirer while hinting that Bengals might lock the 24-year-old even before Week 1 kicks off.

“Typically, our extensions have gotten done during camp at some point,” he added.

Joe Mixon had back-to-back 1,100+ rushing yards seasons in the past two years and emerged as one of the most dynamic young backs in the league. This gives Mixon leverage in negotiations, and he reportedly wants to use it to be one of league’s top eight highest-paid RBs. This would mean a yearly salary north of $8 million.

Mixon himself said on numerous occasions that he wants to stay in Cincinnati and sees a future for himself with the organization. However, he could easily change his mindset if Bengals don’t show him the money.
