Collins became a free agent in late September after the Lions couldn’t find a way to trade him. He started the first two games of the 2021 NFL season but was a healthy scratch in the next two. There should be a different scenario for Collins in New England, where he is expected to play a prominent role. He will most likely be slotted right behind Pro Bowler Donta Hightower and veteran Kyle Van Noy on the depth chart.

The Detroit Lions are not happy with the contributions of veteran linebacker Jamie Collins, which is why the team is looking to trade him. This was confirmed to reporters by the Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who added that the player would stay away from the team until the process is completed.

“We’ve got suitors right now. So certainly we’re hoping to have this done sooner than later, but we’re not necessarily putting a timetable on it either,” Campbell said on Thursday.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise considering that Collins started both games in 2021 and contributed with seven tackles, including one for loss, one QB hit, and a fumble recovery. But this obviously wasn’t enough for Campbell to overlook his struggles with pass coverage and strange fit into the new defensive scheme.

With Collins away from the team, the Lions will most likely turn to rookie Derrick Barnes as a starter on the linebacker position. Barnes, who was selected in the fourth round out of Purdue, had most of his snaps on special teams throughout the first two weeks. Veteran Jalen Reeves-Maybin is also expected to get an extended look and more playing time.

By cutting Collins, who was the team’s leading tackler in 2018 with 104 combined tackles, Browns freed up a significant amount of salary cap space, saving $9.25 million for the upcoming season and $13.75 million in 2020.

The news was confirmed on Cleveland’s official Twitter page.

“We want to thank Jamie for his contributions to the Cleveland Browns,” – said general manager John Dorsey in a statement. “These types of decisions are never easy. Jamie is a respected veteran player in this league, and we wish him the best as he continues his career.”
