The New York Mets were looking for a catcher this off-season on the free agent market, and they appear to have added the man who will control their backstop for the next four seasons.

The Mets have reportedly agreed to a four-year, $40 million contract with free agent catcher James McCann, previously with the Chicago White Sox.

McCann became a free agent earlier this offseason and was one of the most sought-after players at his position along with JT Realmuto, long assumed to be a Mets target.

However, the team from Queens ended up choosing McCann, who is coming off of a career year in which he hit .288 with 7 home runs as the White Sox’s main catcher in 31 games.

Long considered a defensive specialist, McCann began to produce as a hitter over the past two years on the South Side of Chicago and thus became one of the most intriguing players at his position in the league.

The Mets will look to him to contribute in their deadly offense and serve as the leader of a pitching staff that must improve if the team wants to compete for a playoff berth in the coming years.

Expect the deal to be officially announced by the Mets over the next few days.

McCann attracted interest from multiple teams in recent weeks, including the St. Louis Cardinals and NY Yankees, but the Mets are in the best position to secure his services, according to league sources.

Mets need a reliable catcher and have previously identified the position as one of their priorities this offseason. They first made a run for J.T.
