The New York Mets continue to have an eventful offseason. After recently signing right-hander Trevor May, the team is now reportedly making a “serious” push to land free-agent catcher James McCann as well.

McCann attracted interest from multiple teams in recent weeks, including the St. Louis Cardinals and NY Yankees, but the Mets are in the best position to secure his services, according to league sources.

SNY previously reported that the 30-year-old All-Star is looking for a four-year deal from potential suitors.

Mets need a reliable catcher and have previously identified the position as one of their priorities this offseason. They first made a run for J.T. Realmuto, but recently shifted their focus to McCann as a more affordable option. Realmuto is believed to be looking for a big-time contract that would make him the highest-paid catcher in the history of the league.

Outside of McCann, the Mets are keeping an eye on a number of other free agents, including Astros’ slugger George Springer.

James McCann entered free agency after two productive years with the Chicago White Sox that saw him play some of his best baseball. He batted a career-best .273 in 2019, and .289 in 2020, while also hitting 25 homers and 75 RBIs during that period.
