The Memphis Grizzlies will be without their superstar Ja Morant for the remainder of the season after it was revealed that the two-time All-Star would need to undergo surgery on his right shoulder. Morant is expected to be fully recovered for the 2024-25 season.

Morant suffered a subluxation of his right shoulder during a practice session with his team on Saturday, ruling him out of Sunday’s 115-121 win on the road against the Phoenix Suns. He consequently underwent an MRI that revealed that he had suffered an underlying labral tear, requiring him to undergo surgery.

This is the second Grizzlies star to have a season-ending surgery during the current campaign. Steven Adams will also be out for the season after he underwent surgery to repair the PCL in his right knee. He has been sidelined since last January as a result. Morant swept the competition, including San Antonio Spurs’ Dejounte Murray and Darius Garland of the Cleveland Cavaliers, getting 38 first-place votes and 221 points.

Morant being in consideration for the MIP was somewhat controversial considering that he was already considered a rising star in the league last season. Historically, the award was given to players who mostly came out of nowhere to become stars. However, Morant’s jump in 2021-22 was so drastic that the league felt he qualified.

This season, Morant improved his career highs in almost every category and did that by a lot. After averaging 19.1 points in 2020-2021, he had 27.4 per game in 2021-22. The 22-year-old player also went from 4.0 rebounds to 5.7 boards while improving his shooting percentage from 44.9 percent to 49.3 percent.

The Memphis Grizzlies won’t rush their star point guard Ja Morant to get back on the court. According to the team’s head coach Taylor Jenkins, Morant will be sidelined for at least two more weeks due to soreness in his right knee.

Morant missed a week’s worth of action so far after hurting his knee in a 120-105 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on March 19. By shutting him down for two more weeks, the Grizzlies are looking to ensure that the 22-year-old All-Star makes a full recovery and is ready for the playoffs. 

“We expect him to make a full recovery before the playoffs, and we’re excited about that with two and a half weeks left in the season,” Jenkins told reporters on Thursday. “We’ll offload him early, then he’ll start reloading pretty soon here with that two weeks in mind to reevaluate.”

“I don’t think so,” Morant responded while chuckling.

Rooks followed up by asking Morant what it would take for him to say yes to a Dunk Contest invite.

“A million dollars,” the 22-year-old star said. “They give me a mill, I’ll go in the dunk contest. Otherwise, I’ll be watching, sending out my tweets judging and stuff.”

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant injured his ankle on Monday during the team’s 116-111 overtime win over the Brooklyn Nets.

After receiving further tests on Tuesday, it was established that Morant suffered a Grade 2 ankle sprain, which means that he is going to be out for at least three to five weeks.

Morant injured the ankle while trying to defend a shot by Timothe Luwawu-Caborrot. Morant landed on Luwawu-Cabarrot’s foot and rolled his ankle in the process. The Memphis training staff took all precautions and put Morant in a wheelchair before heading to the locker room.

Morant came back to the bench later with his foot in a walking boot.

The Grizzlies need their star player if they want to be competitive this year. Morant was last year’s NBA Rookie of the Year and almost led Memphis to the playoffs in a season in which most experts expected the Grizzlies to have one of the worst records in the league.

The Grizzlies are already depleted with Jaren Jackson Jr. still recovering from knee surgery and Justise Winslow working his way back to health after suffering a hip injury.

As expected, the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team is headlined by Memphis Grizzlies’ guard Ja Morant, who also won this season’s Rookie of the Year award. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Morant had a minor arthroscopic procedure in order to remove a loose body in his right knee. Reportedly, the 19-year-old guard is expected to make a full recovery in four weeks.

Following the procedure, Morant went on his social media and shared with his followers that the surgery was a successful one.

Ja Morant is coming off a breakthrough sophomore season with Murray State in which he averaged 24.5 points per game and helped the Racers to the second round of NCAA Division I Tournament. Morant also added the division-leading 10.0 assists alongside 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.
