The Indianapolis Colts will have rookie Anthony Richardson as their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. This was confirmed by the Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen in a chat with the reporters on Tuesday.

Richardson played one-quarter of football in the preseason opener, completing seven passes out of 12 attempts and throwing for 67 yards and an interception against the Buffalo Bills. While his performance wasn’t spectacular, it was enough for Steichen to make up his mind.

“Anthony’s just been progressing,” Steichen said of his decision. “The growth he’s shown, then, obviously, going into Buffalo, playing against a lot of their starters, he showed great signs of improvement. I like the things he did, and it’s an opportunity now for him to get a lot more with the [starters] moving forward, and we go from there.”

The Colts selected Richardson, who played college football with the Florida Gators, with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. While many analysts had him as the quarterback with the most upside in the class, he was also considered the least NFL-ready signal-caller taken in the first round.

The Colts signed former Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Gardner Minshew in the free agency, and he was the favorite to be the starter this offseason while Richardson adapts to the pros. However, it looks like Steichen and his coaching staff don’t want to waste any time and will roll the dice on Richardson right away.

Quarterback Nick Foles signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts on Monday—a move that will once again see him work with coach Frank Reich. While the team refused to disclose the terms of the contract, sources revealed that Foles had signed a two-year deal with the team.

Foles previously worked under Reick in 2017, when Reich served as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles team that went on to win that season’s Super Bowl championship.

According to reports, the Eagles were eager to re-sign Foles before he concluded his deal with the Colts. After considering Foles, the Eagles opted to remain with their current quarterback lineup, particularly as talk of the potential departure of Gardner Minshew from the team was dismissed.

In a move corresponding to Foles’ arrival, the Colts decided to release quarterback James Morgan from his contract.

Set to play backup to starting quarterback James Morgan, Foles faces competition from 2021 sixth-round draft pick Sam Ehlinger and undrafted free agent Jack Coan.

Prior to signing with the Colts, Foles was recently made a free agent after being released by the Chicago Bears on May 1. This move was expected after the Bears signed free agent quarterback Trevor Siemian.

It is safe to say that Indianapolis Colts’ veteran quarterback Philip Rivers experienced some rough patches at the start of the 2020 NFL season. Rivers struggled with turnovers so far, and currently has more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (four) in the first five weeks. Still, his job seems safe at the moment.

Colts’ head coach Frank Reich publicly supported Rivers on Monday and told the media that he doesn’t consider making a switch at the position.

“No,” said Reich when asked whether he’s thinking about promoting backup Jacoby Brissett to the No.1 QB. “Philip is our quarterback.”

Rivers especially had a tough outing in Sunday’s loss to Cleveland Browns, when he produced nine points for the opposing team. The 38-year-old first threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown in the second half and then gave up an intentional grounding in the endzone for a safety.

Despite all of this, Reich intends to stick with his Week 1 starter.

“My trust at the end of the day is that this guy is a Hall of Fame quarterback,” he added. “I have the utmost belief in him, and our team has the utmost belief in him, and you’re gonna have to live with some mistakes. We truly believe the good will far outweigh the bad.”

Despite Philip Rivers’ shaky play, Colts are 3-2 to start the season and don’t need to panic right now. However, if Rivers continues to play badly and Indianapolis starts losing, the chatter of the QB switch will become louder.

Although they missed the playoffs in 2019, Indianapolis Colts remained quite competitive this season in the wake of Andrew Luck’s retirement. That was thanks to quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s solid play, who at times looked like a real franchise QB. However, Brissett was also inconsistent later in the year, which is why he isn’t a lock for a starting job in 2020.

Talking with reporters on Thursday, Colts’ general manager Chris Ballard said that “the jury’s still out” on Brissett as the team’s QB of the future.

“I think the jury’s still out, that’s why we did the short-term deal with Jacoby,” said Ballard. “Both from a standpoint of, one, to give us some security that we knew we had a player we liked and could go forward with but also, two, to see, time for us to figure out if he is the guy or not. Jacoby did a lot of good things. He also did some things I think he would tell you he needs to get better at but it’s constant evaluation.”

Ballard also added that Brissett will most likely be Indianapolis’ starting QB in Week 1 of 2020 NFL season, but didn’t rule out a possibility of looking at other options.

Jacoby Brissett entered the season as Indianapolis Colts’s backup quarterback, but got promoted when Luck suddenly retired from NFL in early August. Brissett inked a new deal with Colts shortly after, getting a two-year, $30 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

Brissett looked good early in the season, leading the Colts to 5-2 record in the first seven games. He then suffered a knee injury, after which he was never the same. The 27-year-old struggled in the second part of 2019, and Indianapolis won only three out of their next nine games.

Brissett finished the year with 2,942 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns while adding 228 rushing yards and four rushing TDs.

After their starting quarterback Andrew Luck retired in a surprising turn of events, Indianapolis Colts found themselves with only Jacoby Brissett as a viable option at the QB position. The team, however, might address this soon enough.

According to ESPN, the Colts brought in veteran free-agent QB Brock Osweiler for a workout on Tuesday. The organization is reportedly interested in making him a backup to Brissett for the 2019 NFL season if he ends up performing well.

Besides Brissett, Indianapolis has two more QBs on their roster in Phillip Walker and Chad Kelly, but they only have one snap played in an official NFL game combined. This is why the Colts decided to turn to the free-agent market at it seems like Osweiler emerged as the most intriguing option available.

Brock Osweiler spent 2018 with the Miami Dolphins, playing in seven games and starting five of them. He ended up with 1,247 passing yards and six touchdowns in total while leading the team to a 2-3 record.

Osweiler, who was a second-round pick in 2012, previously also played with Denver Broncos and Houston Texans. His career stats include 59.8 percent pass completion and throwing for 7,418 yards and 37 TDs.

After missing the 2017 season with a shoulder injury, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is still to throw a regulation football. The 28-year-old recently talked with reporters and revealed that there is a timetable for when that might happen, but didn’t want to go further into details. Still, Luck said that he is “confident” and “optimistic” about his return from the injury.

There is a timetable, but I’m not going to share it with you guys,” – said Luck on Monday. “I’ve very, very confident and very, very optimistic I’m going to be absolutely fine and come back better than I was. I’ll be a better quarterback, a better teammate, a better person.

After being drafted first overall by the Colts in 2012 NFL Draft, Andrew Luck was named the team’s starting QB. He led the Colts to playoff appearances in his first three seasons with the team and didn’t miss a single game. Luck injured his shoulder at the beginning of 2015 season, and went on to miss 26 games in the next three seasons, while the Colts failed to reach the playoffs on three consecutive occasions.

I guess there is a certain amount of guilt that I’ve lived with for not being able to play this past year,” – said Luck. “Not being out there for the team, and it sounds a little corny and a little cheesy. It was very difficult. I’ve put a lot of my self-worth in being available for this team and being the best I could for this team. That maybe is not the healthiest thing in the world to do. When I wasn’t available and I couldn’t help the team, and when I maybe felt like I was being a bit of a distraction, that was hard for me to handle. [It] provided also some good learning opportunities. I believe I’ll come back a better player and … a better teammate, a better person.
