Rafael Nadal is the undisputed “King of Clay,” and he showed that once again at the 2020 French Open. Nadal faced the world’s No.1 Novak Djokovic in the tournament’s finals on Sunday and got a dominant 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 win to claim his 20th, record-tying, Grand Slam.

Although he caught up to Roger Federer in terms of Grand Slam wins, Nadal wasn’t focused on that achievement. Instead, he embraced the fact that he won his 13th Roland Garros, more than anyone ever by a large margin, and that he did it without surrendering a single set in this year’s run.

“[To] win here means everything to me, no? It’s not the moment, honestly … [to] think today about the 20th,” said Nadal after the match. “Roland Garros means everything to me. I spent, here, the most important moments—or most of the most important moments—in my tennis career, no doubt about that.”

It sounds almost unbelievable, but Rafael Nadal owns a 100-2 record at French Open and is 26-0 in semi-finals and finals. His only two losses came in 2009 when he lost to Robin Soderling in the fourth round, and in 2015, when eventual champion Stan Wawrinka eliminated him in quarter-finals. The only other time that Nadal participated at Roland Garros but didn’t win was in 2016 when he had to withdraw due to wrist injury.

Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, remained at one French Open win and 17 Grand Slams. This was only his fourth loss to Nadal in the last 18 matches. Djokovic still holds a 29-27 head-to-head record.

“What you are doing in this court is unbelievable. Not just this court—throughout your entire career, you’ve been a great champion,” Djokovic told Nadal during the trophy presentation. “Today you showed why you are King of the Clay.”

Bianca Andreescu, the US Open winner from 2019, is done with competitive tennis for this year.  The current No.6 player in the world announced her decision via social media.

According to the 20-year-old Canadian, she will use the rest of 2020 to focus on “health and training.”

“As hard it was to come to this conclusion, I have so much to look forward to in 2021, including the Olympics; I want to use this time to focus on my game so I can come back stronger and better than ever,” Andreescu wrote in a statement published on Twitter.

Andreescu hasn’t played at all on WTA Tour in 2020, missing the first couple of months of the season, including the Australian Open, due to knee injury. She then decided to skip the re-scheduled US Open and subsequent tournaments due to concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bianca Andreescu had a breakthrough year in 2019, posting career-best results on Grand Slam tournaments. She reached the second round at the Australian Open and French Open before claiming an unlikely win at the US Open.

By winning the US Open, she became the first Canadian tennis player to win a Grand Slam title. She also became the highest-ranked player in the history of Canadian tennis when she reached No.4 in October 2019.

The reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka won’t be chasing more Grand Slam glory this year. Osaka issued a statement on social media on Thursday announcing that she won’t play at 2020 French Open.

According to Osaka, she is dealing with hamstring issues and believes that she won’t have enough time to recover before the start of the tournament. French Open is set to start on September 21st, after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Unfortunately I won’t be able to play the French Open this year,” Osaka wrote on Twitter. “My hamstring is still sore so I won’t have enough time to prepare for the clay — these 2 tournaments came too close to each other for me this time. I wish the organizers and players all the best.”

Despite winning the Australian Open and lifting the US Open trophy twice, Naomi Osaka didn’t see much success at French Open. She played the tournament four times and reached the third round three times, which stands as her biggest success. Osaka was eliminated last year by Katerina Siniakova.

Osaka isn’t the only high-profile tennis player to miss the tournament this year. Defending French Open champ and No.1 ranked tennis player in the world Ashleigh Barty also decided not to take part, citing concerns over coronavirus pandemic.

After entering this year’s U.S. Open as a wild-card, former world No.1 Andy Murray will take the same route for the 2020 French Open.

The tournament organizers handed out eight wild-card invitations into the men’s singles main draw, with Murray being the only non-French player to receive one. The non-French players in women’s singles to get invited were Wimbledon semi-finalist from 2010 Tsvetana Pironkova and Eugenie Bouchard, who has Wimbledon finals and French Open semi-finals appearance.

Murray, who has three career Grand Slams, struggled with injuries in recent years and was close to walking away from tennis for good at one point. This caused him to have a significant drop in rankings as he plummeted to No.129 ahead of US Open. After reaching the second round, in which he was eliminated by FelixAugerAliassime, the 33-year-old player improved to No.110, but that still wasn’t enough to enter the main draw at Roland Garros.

Andy Murray’s best result at the French Open was a Finals appearance in 2016 when he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets. Murray, who also has four semi-finals in Paris, hasn’t played the tournament since 2017.

Roger Federer is forced to take some time away from tennis. The Swiss tennis player announced on Thursday that he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, which will force him to spend up to four months on the sidelines.

Due to the surgery, Federer will miss tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells, Bogota, and Miami, as well as French Open, the second Grand Slam of the season.

According to the announcement posted on his social media, the 38-year-old should be back in time for grass tournaments.

“After the procedure, the doctors confirmed that it was the right thing to have done and are very confident of a full recovery,” said Federer in a statement. “As a result, I will unfortunately have to miss Dubai, Indian Wells, Bogota, Miami and the French Open. I am grateful for everyone’s support. I can’t wait to be back playing soon, see you on the grass!”

Federer’s last tennis match came in Cape Town, South Africa when he managed to beat Rafael Nadal in an exhibition game in front of record 51,954 people.
