Frank de Boer didn’t have to wait for long to find a new job after parting ways with Atlanta United earlier in the summer. According to multiple reports from Europe, de Boer agreed to take over the Netherlands national team.

De Boer will sign a contract until 2022, succeeding Ronald Koeman at the position. Koeman left last month to take over Barcelona.

The Royal Netherlands Football Association is expected to make the agreement official later this week or early next week.

De Boer won’t have much time to settle on his new job, as he will have to announce the senior team selection next Friday. He will make his debut in a friendly against Mexico on October 7, followed by the UEFA League of Nations match against Bosnia and Herzegovina four days later.

After an illustrious career as a player, Frank de Boer transitioned to a managerial career and had his first start with Ajax. De Boer enjoyed an impressive run with the Eredivisie powerhouse, winning four consecutive national titles between 2010 and 2014 alongside one Dutch Super Cup. Despite this success, he decided to resign from the club in 2016.

De Boer took over Seria A side Inter Milan in the same year but only lasted a couple of months at the position before being fired after seven losses in 14 games. He was then appointed as coach of Premier League club Crystal Palace, where he also saw a quick exit after suffering four defeats in five games.

After taking a one-year break, de Boer returned to managing in 2018 when he was appointed as the coach of Atlanta United. He won Campeones Cup and U.S. Open Cup with Atlanta in 2019 but mutually agreed with the club to part ways after three defeats in the recent MLS is Back Tournament.

Atlanta United and manager Frank De Boer are finally going their separate ways. The club confirmed the news on Friday, saying that the decision was mutual.

“After discussing it with Frank, the decision was reached mutually to part ways,” said Atlanta’s president Darren Eales. “In winning two trophies in his first season in charge, he will always be a part of the club’s history, and with great appreciation and respect, we wish him all the best in the future.”

Atlanta will announce their interim manager in the near future while embarking on a search for a permanent solution at the position.

De Boer leaves the club after a horrific campaign in the MLS is Back tournament, where Atlanta lost all of their three matches while failing to score a single goal. The club reportedly couldn’t overlook the deficiencies in the team’s game and decided that squad needs a new leading voice in the locker room.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had with Atlanta United,” said De Boer. “Coaching in Major League Soccer and living in Atlanta has been a wonderful experience and a welcome new challenge.”

Frank De Boer took over Atlanta United ahead of the 2019 MLS season, replacing Gerardo Tata Martino at the helm. He had a shaky start of the season, and was on the verge of being sacked, before turning things over. Atlanta ended up winning U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup last year while making it to Eastern Conference Finals.

Before coming to MLS, De Boer coached Ajax, Inter Milan, and Crystal Palace. He won four Eredivisie titles with Ajax but only lasted 14 games with Inter and five games with Palace before being sacked.

Atlanta United is in the search for a new head coach, and former Ajax manager Frank de Boer is reportedly the leading candidate for the job. This was confirmed to ESPN by several sources close to the club.

United has been without a coach since early December when Gerardo Tata Martino decided to step down after winning the MLS Cup with the team. This wasn’t a surprise, however, since Martino’s decision not to return in 2019 was known in October, which is when Atlanta started testing the market for a manager.

Frank de Boer, who had a successful career as a player, established himself as one of the best young coaches in the game during the six years he was at Ajax. He won four consecutive Eredivisie titles between 2010 and 2014, before deciding to step down in 2016.

Shortly after, de Boer landed a job with Seria A giants Inter Milan but ended up being fired after only 14 games. He tried his luck in the Premier League after that but lasted five games with Crystal Palace before getting sacked once again.

Several other names have been considered for the Atlanta United’s head coaching job, including former Boca Juniors manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Marcelo Bielsa, and Juan Carlos Osorio.
