Atlanta United is in the search for a new head coach, and former Ajax manager Frank de Boer is reportedly the leading candidate for the job. This was confirmed to ESPN by several sources close to the club.

United has been without a coach since early December when Gerardo Tata Martino decided to step down after winning the MLS Cup with the team. This wasn’t a surprise, however, since Martino’s decision not to return in 2019 was known in October, which is when Atlanta started testing the market for a manager.

Frank de Boer, who had a successful career as a player, established himself as one of the best young coaches in the game during the six years he was at Ajax. He won four consecutive Eredivisie titles between 2010 and 2014, before deciding to step down in 2016.

Shortly after, de Boer landed a job with Seria A giants Inter Milan but ended up being fired after only 14 games. He tried his luck in the Premier League after that but lasted five games with Crystal Palace before getting sacked once again.

Several other names have been considered for the Atlanta United’s head coaching job, including former Boca Juniors manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Marcelo Bielsa, and Juan Carlos Osorio.
