The 2021 Formula One season might be marked by a return of a familiar face. According to a number of recent reports, Spanish racing driver Fernando Alonso is considering an F1 return next year.

The news was also confirmed by former Renault manager Flavio Briatore, who told Gazzetta Dello Sport on Monday that Alonso is “motivated” and ready to drive in F1 once again.

“Fernando is motivated,” said Briatore. “A year out of Formula One has done him good. He has detoxed himself, and I see him more serene and ready to return.”

Alonso decided to retire from F1 in 2018 after he failed to reach a single podium finish in four years with McLaren. He then went to compete in other racing competitions, including 24 Hours of Le Mans, IndyCar Series, and Dakar Rally.

If Fernando Alonso indeed decides to return to Formula One, his most likely destination would be Renault. The team recently lost their No.1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, who decided to sign with McLaren.

This would be a return to familiar surroundings for Alonso, as he had his biggest success with Renault. Alonso was part of Renault for seven years in two different stints and managed to win consecutive championships in 2005 and 2006. He later went to Ferrari but failed to have the same amount of success.

Fernando Alonso is ready to return to Formula 1 just one year after finishing his F1 career to compete in other motorsport competitions. Alonso recently ended his partnership with McLaren in Indy 500 race and has since reached out to Red Bull in order to let them know that he is available to compete in F1 next season.

The news about Alonso’s wish to return to Formula 1 was confirmed by Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko in a recent Motorsport.com interview. However, Marko dismissed the team’s interest in two-times F1 champion due to his poor relationship with Red Bull’s motor engine manufactured Honda.

“Alonso’s representatives have let us know that he is available,” – said Marko. “But for Honda, Alonso is something impossible.”

Fernando Alonso was often critical about Honda’s engines and their lack of performance in the past. His frustration reached a boiling point in 2017 when he decided to quit his F1 team McLaren, whose cars were running on Honda engines, prior to Monaco Grand Prix and race in Indy 500.

With Red Bull passing on his offer, Alonso now reportedly eyes an opportunity to return to his old team Ferrari in case Sebastian Vettel decided to leave the team in the near future.

After spending 17 years in the Formula 1 competition, Spanish driver Fernando Alonso has announced his retirement. Alonso, who won two championships, will officially say goodbye to F1 after 2018 ends with United Arab Emirates Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 25th. The 37-year-old said he would turn his attention to “some other bigger challenges.” This hints that he could make a switch to IndyCar in 2019.

After 17 wonderful years in this amazing sport it’s time for me to make a change and move on,” – said Alonso in a statement released via his F1 team McLaren. “I made this decision some months ago and it was a firm one. There are still several grands prix to go this season, and I will take part in them with more commitment and passion than ever.

Fernando Alonso also posted a video tribute on Twitter in which he reflected on his time spent in F1.

I can only be grateful to you and to the people that are a part of you.” – said Alonso in the video. “For having introduced me to so many cultures, traditions and languages, some wonderful people and for having been my life. I know you love me and be certain that I love you too.

After serving as a test driver at Benetton, Fernando Alonso made his F1 debut with Minardi at the Australian Grand Prix in 2001. In 2003 he made a switch to Renault with whom he won two consecutive championships in 2005 and 2006. He was also a member of several other F1 teams including Ferrari and McLaren. Alonso is currently ranked ninth on the driver standings after finishing 15th in 2017.
