The Dallas Cowboys are turning to one of the former franchise stars to bolster depth in the running back position. According to multiple reports, the Cowboys will reunite with Ezekiel Elliott, who agreed to a one-year deal with the franchise over the weekend.

Reportedly, Elliott’s deal with the Cowboys will max out at $3 million and will become official once the veteran passes his physical.

Elliott returning to the Cowboys doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that the franchise’s executive vice president, Stephen Jones, previously hinted that the team is looking into a reunion.

“Well, Zeke, as we all know, is one of our favorites,” said Jones last week. “He’s laid it on the line for this franchise. He’s the ultimate competitor. I mean, he’s a guy that we obviously think a lot of.”

Ezekiel Elliott entered the league as the Cowboys’ fourth overall selection in 2016 and quickly established himself as one of the best backs in the league. He received a First-Team All-Pro selection in his rookie year after rushing for a league-leading 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns while making the Pro Bowl three times in his first four years in the league.

However, Elliott’s productivity dipped in the following seasons as he struggled to be a force in the backfield as he once was. This, alongside his big contract, prompted the Cowboys to release him at the end of the 2022 campaign. Elliott spent the 2023 season with the New England Patriots, rushing for 642 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games, including five starts.

Free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott made his way to Massachusetts on Saturday to visit the New England Patriots, sources revealed to ESPN. This comes as the Patriots are reportedly looking to recruit someone in Elliott’s role as they prepare to perfect their running game when training in full pads next week.

Elliott was released by the Dallas Cowboys on March 15 after managing just 876 rushing yards in 2022; a career low. Still, Elliott was able to score 12 touchdowns while remaining a top short-yardage back and pass protector.

While this is Elliott’s first free-agent visit, he is not the first unattached player that the Patriots have hosted in recent times. Fellow free agents Leonard Fournette and Darrell Henderson visited the Patriots’ practice facility last week, while Dalvin Cook has also been linked with the team. Cook is also expected to visit the New York Jets in the coming days.

“Dalvin’s another player, this is a really, really unique situation — you don’t typically have players of this caliber available at this time,” director of player personnel Matt Groh explained, exhibiting an interest in the player.

The Dallas Cowboys are moving from former franchise star running back Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys made the news official on Wednesday, releasing Elliott after seven years with the team.

The Cowboys commemorated Elliott’s time with the franchise through a series of social media posts and a statement from team owner Jerry Jones.

“Zeke’s impact and influence is seared into the Cowboys franchise in a very special and indelible way,” Jones said in a statement. “…  Zeke defined what a great teammate should be, and anyone that has ever played a team sport would be lucky to have a teammate like Zeke and be much better for it.”

The Cowboys decided to release Elliott for a number of reasons. The most obvious one is his declining play in recent seasons. The former fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft hasn’t been on a Pro Bowl level for years and delivered an underwhelming 2022 campaign that saw him rush for a career-low 876 yards.

The move also provided a significant salary cap relief for the franchise. By designating Elliott as a post-June 1 release, the Cowboys will save around $11 million in salary cap while not being on the hook for the remaining four years on the six-year, $90 million extension he signed back in 2019.

The Cowboys will move forward with a younger and cheaper running back in Tony Pollard, who outperformed Elliott last season. Elliott, on the other hand, will hit a free agent market and will likely have to settle for a one-year deal in an attempt to resurrect his career.

In their first game without their star quarterback Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys had a miserable outing on Monday night, losing 38-10 to the Arizona Cardinals.

Prescott suffered a gruesome ankle injury in the team’s win against the New York Giants last week and will not be coming back in 2020. Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton stepped in for the Cowboys and led a fourth-quarter drive to get the victory over the Giants.

However, he couldn’t get much going against Arizona. With Prescott out, the Cowboys had to rely on their star running back Ezekiel Elliott, who had a miserable game against the Cardinals, fumbling the ball twice.

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray got off to a slow start and was fairly inaccurate throwing the ball all game, going just 9-24 for 188 yards. However, he managed to connect for two touchdowns with Arizona wide receiver Christian Kirk, which was enough to secure the win against Dallas’s struggling offense and porous defense.

Dallas is still in first place in the underachieving NFC East with a 2-4 record. They will look to right the ship on Sunday against division rivals the Washington Football Team, who lost to the Giants on Sunday and are currently in last place in the division with a 1-5 record.

Ezekiel Elliott’s holdout paid off. According to multiple sources around NFL, Pro Bowl running back and Dallas Cowboys agreed to an extension that will make Elliott the highest-paid RB in the league.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the two sides agreed to a six-year extension, which is worth $90 million and comes with $50 million guaranteed. This tops the previous record, held by Los Angeles Rams’ Todd Gurley, who got $45 million guaranteed on his deal.

Elliott’s new deal will see him stay with the franchise through 2026. The 24-year-old has two years on his rookie deal, which pay him $3.853 million and $9.09 million respectively. This brings the total value of his deal at more than $100 million.

Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed the extension on Wednesday morning during an interview with CNBC.

“Zeke has been arguably our best player,” said Jones. “I’m not trying to be unfair to anybody else, but he’s an incremental part to our success. We’re glad to get him booked in. We’re glad to have him on.”

The team also posted a photo of Elliott signing his extension on social media.

Although having two years on his deal, Ezekiel Elliott wanted to get long-term security from Dallas Cowboys this offseason and demanded an extension. In order to force Cowboys’ hand, Elliott missed all of the team’s mandatory activities including the training camp. Although it was rumored that Cowboys might play hardball with the player and were prepared to let him miss regular-season games, two sides managed to come to an agreement before the 2019 NFL season officially kicked off.

Elliott has been one of Cowboys’ best players since being drafted fourth overall in 2016 NFL Draft. Since then he led the league twice in rushing, while earning two Pro Bowl appearances and one All-Pro honor.

It seems like Dallas Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott doesn’t have the intention to terminate his holdout if he doesn’t get paid. According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Elliott’s representatives have told the Cowboys that the 24-year-old Pro Bowler won’t play for the team until he gets a new contract.

Elliott currently has two years left on his rookie deal, which will pay him 3.85 million and $9.09 million in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Despite this, he decided to ask for a new deal contract from the organization, hoping to get the “market-setting” type of money. The issue is, however, that Dallas isn’t willing to go that far.

Dallas Cowboys already paid big money to several players this offseason, and are also in the middle of contract negotiations with wide receiver Amari Cooper and quarterback Dak Prescott, both of whom have only one year left on their deals. This makes it tough for the franchise to pay top dollar to everyone.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill recently reported that Cowboys gave the Cooper, Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott offers that would make them among the top five highest-paid players on their positions. Elliott, however, isn’t pleased with this offer that is close to the four years and $52.5 million that Le’ Veon Bell got from New York Jets. He would prefer something in the ballpark of four years, $60 million that Todd Gurley got from Los Angeles Rams.

However, while Cowboys find themselves in a tough spot after these reports, the team’s owner and general manager Jerry Jones isn’t too worried about the situation.

“Just know that like so many things, it’ll happen. It’ll happen,” – Jones recently told NFL Network. “There literally is no concern on my part at all about any time frame. That’ll happen. The results are too good for them and too good for the Cowboys. Think about it now. The results are too good for them and too good for the Cowboys. That always happens when it’s that good for both of us.”

Dallas Cowboys are getting insurance in case the hold out of their star running back Ezekiel Elliot turns ugly. Cowboys announced on Monday that they had signed veteran RB Alfred Morris to a one-year deal.

Morris spent the previous season with San Francisco 49ers, ending 2018 with 428 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The 30-year-old journeyman reportedly had an offer from New Orleans Saints but decided to come to Dallas where be played between 2016 and 2017.

Cowboys confirmed the acquisition on their official social media.

Dallas Cowboys entered the training camp without Elliott, who was a no show as he is looking to get a contract extension. Although there is no doubt that the 24-year-old Pro Bowler means a lot for the team’s offense, the issue here is that he has two years remaining on his deal and Cowboys have lots of other key players to pay.

Dallas is believed to be prioritizing the extensions for quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper, both of whom have only one year remaining on their deal.

With Alfred Morris on the roster, Cowboys have some breathing space. Morris is a veteran that is familiar with Dallas’ offense, and he already covered Elliott when he was suspended back in 2017.

Morris rushed for 790 rushing yards and three TDs during his previous stint with Cowboys.

Things are far from over concerning the suspension of Dallas Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott. After a federal court in Texas delayed Elliott’s 6 games suspension, NFL filed an emergency motion on Friday, looking to overrule that decision. According to ESPN, NFL filed its request to 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans asking for an injunction brought by Texas judge Amos Mazzant to be suspended as early as Tuesday, before the Cowboys’ game against Arizona Cardinals. If the ruling isn’t made by Tuesday, the league asks for the decision to be made before the Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Rams game scheduled for September 26.

After the appeal has made, Elliott’s legal team issued a statement via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport‏ saying the following:

The NFL’s latest legal maneuvering appears to be indicative of a league with an agenda: Trying to navigate a public relations crisis rather than focus on fairness and fact finding. The only conclusion that can be drawn is that the NFL believes it can write its own rules and will stop at nothing to further its agenda of enforcing its unfounded assertions regarding Mr. Elliott. Most recently this would include the NFL seeking an expedited hearing on staying the preliminary injunction by frivolously arguing that the NFL is somehow ‘irreparably harmed’ by Elliott playing while the Courts decide whether the investigation and appeal was fundamentally unfair. Mr. Elliott and his team will continue to zealously oppose any of the NFL’s court filings

After Ezekiel Elliott was accused of domestic violence in July 2016, NFL conducted a yearlong investigation that resulted in 6 games suspension for Cowboys’ running back. NFL Players Association made a request for “for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to prevent the implementation of the six-game suspension” which was granted by Mazzant. The judge ruled that Elliott “did not receive a fundamentally fair hearing”. After NFL’s latest move, it looks like things will become even more heated.

ESPN has reported that request from NFL Players Association “for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to prevent the implementation of the six-game suspension for Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott” has been granted by federal judge Amos Mazzant III. NFL suspended Elliot for violating the league’s personal conduct policy following accusations of domestic violence.

The court stated that Elliott “did not receive a fundamentally fair hearing”. The full memorandum opinion and order was posted by Josina Anderson of the ESPN on her Twitter profile.

Elliot was accused of domestic violence in July 2016 by his former girlfriend Tiffany Thompson. He has denied the accusations in full. NFL began an investigation that lasted over a year which resulted in 6 games suspension. On Tuesday, following Elliot’s appeal, the suspension was upheld. Elliott’s attorneys have then issued a statement saying that they will take the case on the federal level and that “NFL will have to answer for its unfair and unjust practices“. Kia Wright Roberts, the lead investigator for NFL, questioned Thomson’s credibility after interviewing her 6 times and was against Ezekiel Elliot’s suspension.

Elliot was eligible for Week 1 game against New York Giants, with his suspension beginning on Monday. With the suspension now being delayed, Elliot will be able to play as long as the legal battle is ongoing and probably will remain on the field for the entire season. This doesn’t mean that Elliot is off the hook since he might have to serve his suspension at some point.
Adam Schefter‏ of the ESPN has posted both the statements from NFL Players Association and Ezekiel Elliot’s attorneys on his Twitter profile.

Elliot being able to play this season will mean a great deal for the Cowboys, considering he was league’s top rusher with 1,631 yards, adding 16 touchdowns and 363 receiving yards.

Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys saw his 6 games suspension upheld following the appeal, as reported by ESPN. Still, the Cowboys’ RB will be eligible to play in Week 1 game against New York Giants. Brian McCarthy of the NFL offered an explanation for why Elliott will be able to play in Week 1 on his Twitter profile.

The reports about Elliott’s suspension came in August when NFL determined that the player has violated the league’s personal conduct policy. He was handed suspension for the first six games of the season. Last year, NFL began an investigation after accusations of domestic violence made by Tiffany Thompson, Elliott’s supposed girlfriend. Thompson posted disturbing pictures on her Instagram account, which showed bruises on her body.

Ezekiel Elliott’s appeal hearing was held in New York last week, with 3 days of testimonies amounting to 25 hours. Alongside Elliott, multiple witnesses and experts were present at the hearing. Tiffany Thompson was not present. It is important to note that the NFL’s lead investigator, Kia Wright Roberts interviewed Thompson 6 times, and her final recommendation stated that Elliott should not be suspended.

Although Elliott’s appeal has been denied, his attorneys intend to take the case to the federal level. “Mr. Elliott is looking forward to having his day in federal court where the playing field will be level and the NFL will have to answer for its unfair and unjust practices” – said Elliott’s attorneys in an official statement.

Ezekiel Elliott was drafted by Dallas Cowboys as the 4th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft and named the team’s starting RB at the beginning of the regular season. Elliott finished his rookie season as the league’s top rusher with 1,631 yards. He also added 16 touchdowns combined and 363 receiving yards. His honors and achievements include FedEx Ground Player of the Year award and 4 times Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week.
