Cleveland Browns finally received some good news. The team found out on Sunday that they will be getting a third-round draft pick from Houston Texans as part of the trade that involved running back Duke Johnson.

Browns traded Johnson to Texans in August in exchange for a fourth-round pick. However, the pick was to turn into a third-rounder if the 26-year-old was active on Houston’s roster for 10 games in 2019.

In need of RB depth, Texans activated Johnson for Week 11 game against Baltimore Ravens, activating the clause. He ended up having a nice game, rushing for 40 yards in six attempts, while adding two receptions. 

Although Cleveland wanted to keep Duke Johnson on the roster, the player asked for trade since he was unsatisfied with the way he was being used. Since arriving in Houston, Johnson received more playing time and managed to put together a solid season so far.

Johnson rushed for 327 yards and one touchdown joining the Texans while averaging career-high 5.5 yards per carry. He also added 24 receptions for 232 yards and two TDs.

Cleveland Browns finally honored running back Duke Johnson’s trade request. Browns made the announcement on Thursday that they have traded Johnson to Houston Texans.

According to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero, Texans will send a fourth-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for Johnson. The pick could eventually become a third-rounder if certain conditions are met.

Duke Johnson made a trade request back in March, but Cleveland Browns refused to fulfill his wish in recent months. Considering they have issues on the RB position, Browns intended to keep Johnson on their roster to start 2019 NFL season.  Both head coach Freddie Kitchens and general manager John Dorsey stated earlier that the 25-year-old has a place on the team and that they are counting on him this year.

While it is debatable whether the Browns got the appropriate return for Johnson, the move was probably the best outcome for both sides. Cleveland meets with high expectations this season and having a disgruntled player on their roster wouldn’t help their team’s chemistry. Johnson, on the other side, gets to leave the situation that didn’t suit him and will probably play an important part on Texans’ offense in 2019.

Johnson started only two games with Cleveland last season, rushing for career-low 201 rushing yards and no touchdowns. He, however, had 47 receptions for 429 yards and three TDs.

Mayfield didn’t speak nicely about Johnson’s situation at the time and even called it “self-inflicted.”  But it seems like the two teammates managed to talk things over in recent days.

Speaking about his relationship with Johnson, Mayfield said that they addressed their disagreements and that they are “good.”

“We addressed it. We’re good,” – said Mayfield on Thursday. “We’re here to do our job. He’s here. Like I said, when it all came out, we want people that want to be here. He’s here right now and that’s important. I think that shows we’re here to win.”

Despite the fact that Duke Johnson was open about his intention to leave the team, Browns are not willing to make his wishes true anytime soon. Both general manager Jon Dorsey and head coach Freddie Kitchens publicly stated that they want to keep Johnson for 2019 while “envisioning” a place for him in the team’s offense.

Johnson’s trade request was reportedly caused by the fact that Cleveland tried to trade him early in the year. The 25-year-old is also unpleased the way he was used in 2018 when he had a career-low 201 rushing yards to go with 47 catches for 429 yards and three touchdowns.

Browns’ general manager John Dorsey recently spoke about Johnson’s trade request with reporters and said the organization and new head coach Freddie Kitchens still have the 25-year-old in their plans for the future. 

“I continually keep telling you all that Duke is a very talented football player,” – said Dorsey on Thursday. “We see a lot of stuff for Duke moving forward into the future with regards to him. He is a member of this organization moving forward.”

Several teams reportedly showed interest in acquiring Duke Johnson with New York Jets, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles showing interest. Eagles emerged as a most likely destination for Johnson in the recent weeks, but are reportedly still not ready to pay Browns’ asking price.

Johnson, who was a third round pick in 2015, saw his role being diminished in 2018 and had a career-low 40 carries. He ended the season rushing for 201 yards while adding 47 receptions for 429 yards and three touchdowns.
