Another star wideout from the 2019 class got paid. This time it was Pro Bowler DK Metcalf, who inked a three-year, $72 million extension with the Seattle Seahawks.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Metcalf’s extension comes with $58.2 million guaranteed. He will also receive a $30 million signing bonus, the biggest ever given to a wide receiver.

Since being drafted by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf was a synonym for consistency. He didn’t miss a single game and only failed to start once during his rookie season. Altogether, he managed 216 receptions for 3,170 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Metcalf and the Seahawks were engaged in extension talks for some time, but the two sides had a tough time finding common ground. There was some chatter that the franchise is even considering trading the Ole Miss product as part of the rebuilding efforts after they’ve parted ways with star quarterback Russell Wilson. However, it turned out that the deal was there to be made, and whoever is Seattle’s next QB will have a lot easier time moving the ball down the field with Metcalf on his side.

After DK Metcalf got extended, the only notable wideouts for 2019 without a new deal are Deebo Samuel (San Francisco 49ers) and Diontae Johnson (Pittsburgh Steelers). AJ Brown, Terry McLaurin, and Hunter Renfrow previously all received big-time deals.

The Seattle Seahawks have kicked off their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday without Pro Bowl wideout DK Metcalf. According to ESPN, Metcalf doesn’t have an excuse for his absence and could be hit with a fine if the Seahawks decide to go that route.

Metcalf missing the start of minicamp isn’t so surprising. The 24-year-old player still hasn’t received an extension offer he likes from the Seahawks and is most likely trying to put some pressure on the organization.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Metcalf is currently in Los Angeles where he is recovering from a foot injury that hampered him in 2022.

Metcalf is entering the final year of his rookie deal and would like to have a new contract before stepping on the field for the 2022 NFL season. He is one of several wide receivers from the 2019 class that are looking to exploit the exploding WR market. Fellow Pro Bowler A. J. Brown already got a four-year, $100 million contract, while Deebo Samuel and Terry McLaurin find themselves in a similar situation as Metcalf.

DK Metcalf has been a reliable offensive weapon for Seattle since entering the league. Over the past three years, he made 216 catches for 3,170 yards and 29 touchdowns. Metcalf’s best year as a pro was in 2020 when he received Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro nods after catching 83 passes for 1,303 yards and 10 TDs.

We won’t be seeing Seattle Seahawks wideout DK Metcalf at the Olympic Games anytime soon. Metcalf took part in the 100 meters race at the USA Track and Field Golden Games and Distance Open on Sunday, hoping to qualify for Olympic trials. Unfortunately, he didn’t run fast enough to make the cut.

Metcalf had an official time of 10.37 seconds, finishing last in his race and coming 15th out of 17 contestants. The Pro Bowl wide receiver was faster than Derick Silva (10.38) and Maurice Eaddy (10.44).

Despite coming short, Metcalf drew praise for holding his own against some of the world’s best sprinters. This included positive comments from former silver and bronze Olympic medalist Ato Boldon.

“He did not embarrass himself,” said Boldon, who previously predicted Metcalf will run around 10.6. “He hung with the pack. Yes, I think he’s eighth. But he ran well. I didn’t think he was going to run anywhere near that well.”

Metcalf himself was disappointed with the result but told NBC that he was grateful for having this opportunity.

“It’s very different from football speed, which I just realized,” he added.

This was the first time competing in track and field for DK Metcalf since high school. While attending Oxford High School, Metcalf was successful in the hurdle and long-jump competitions while also taking part in the school’s 4×100 meter relay team.

Metcalf ended up opting for football after high school and ended up playing three years at Ole Miss. He was selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks and went on to earn All-Pro, and Pro Bowl nods in his second year as a pro.
