After losing running back Zack Moss to a season-ending injury, the Buffalo Bills reacted swiftly and signed veteran Devonta Freeman.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Freeman will initially join the Bills’ practice squad but is expected to be elevated to the active roster for the playoff clash against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.

Freeman sat out the start of the 2020 NFL season, failing to receive a satisfying offer during the free agency. He ended up signing with the New York Giants in late September on a one-year, $3 million deal.

The 28-year-old player didn’t get a bounce-back season in New York like he hoped, struggling to remain on the field due to various injuries. He played just five games during the regular season, rushing for 172 yards and a touchdown.

Despite Devonta Freeman’s struggles, however, it isn’t hard to see why the Bills made this move.

With Moss out, Buffalo doesn’t have much behind No. 1 back Devin Singletary. Veteran Taiwan Jones is more valuable as a special teamer while the next on the depth chart, T. J. Yeldon, only has 10 rushes in 2020.

Freeman could provide versatility for the Bills and take some of the load off of Singletary. He also has safe hands, which makes him an asset in the passing game.

Veteran running back Devonta Freeman is reportedly visiting the New York Giants and is set to work out for the team. At Giants, Freeman would most likely fill in for star back Saquon Barkley, who is out for the season due to ACL injury.

Freeman, who has two Pro Bowl career appearances, recently also worked out for Philadelphia Eagles but didn’t manage to hammer out a deal with the organization. He has been a free agent for the better part of the year, being released by Atlanta Falcons in March.

Devonta Freeman generated a lot of interest this offseason and was even offered a deal by Seattle Seahawks prior to training camp. However, the 28-year-old rejected all offers coming his way as he deemed them unsatisfying.

Over the course of his NFL career, Freeman rushed for 3,972 yards and 32 touchdowns. He was also an important factor in the passing game for the Falcons, managing to catch 257 passes for 2,015 receiving yards and 11 TDs.

If Freeman manages to land a contract with the New York Giants, he would probably emerge as the team’s main back from the bat. The team is painfully thin at the position past Barkley, with Dion Lewis and 2017’s fourth-round pick Wayne Gallman being their only options on the position.

It appears that veteran running back Devonta Freeman is becoming less picky about his next NFL destination. According to the player’s new agent Drew Rosenhaus, Freeman is looking to get a job soon and is “open to any team.”

After being released by Falcons back in March, Freeman spent the offseason trying to get a contract on his terms. He publicly said that he would prefer to retire if he doesn’t get a satisfying offer while rejecting a reported one-year, $4 million, contract from Seattle Seahawks. After this, the 28-year-old player was dropped by his agent Kristen Campbell.

Freeman now decided to turn to Rosenhaus, who represents Rob Gronkowski and Tyreek Hill, among others, in hopes he’ll get better results.

“We want to work out a deal in the immediate future, and we are open to any team,” said Rosenhaus. “He’s healthy, he’s in shape, and I’m on a mission to have him give a team a lift in late July.”

During his first four seasons with the Falcons, Devonta Freeman emerged as one of the most dangerous backs in the NFL. This was especially the case in 2015 and 2016 when he had consecutive 1,050+ rushing yards and 11+ rushing touchdowns seasons. Freeman was also Pro Bowler in both years.

However, Freeman’s performances significantly dropped in recent years as he struggled with injuries and inconsistency. In 2018, he played just two games due to knee and groin injuries, while last season he only managed 656 rushing yards and two touchdowns despite making 14 starts.

It looks like former Atlanta Falcons’ running back Devonta Freeman isn’t willing to sign with a team for the 2020 NFL season at all cost. According to NFL Network’s Mike Silver, Freeman wouldn’t mind sitting out the year if he doesn’t get the contract he wants.

Freeman was released by the Falcons back in March and generated a lot of interest from other NFL teams since then. Still, the 28-year-old opted to wait out until he’s able to get the kind of salary he thinks he deserves. Reportedly, Seattle Seahawks even came through with a $4 million a year offer in recent days, which he decided to pass. Seahawks then went on and signed former Houston Texans’ back Carlos Hyde instead.

Devonta Freeman entered the league in 2014 as Atlanta’s fourth-round pick and had significant success early in his career. After a pair of 1,000+ yards and 11 touchdowns seasons, Freeman even received a five-year, $41.25 million contract extension in 2017 that made him the NFL’s highest-paid RB.

However, injuries and inconsistencies in recent seasons made Freeman expendable, and Falcons decided to get out of his contract after he only rushed for 656 yards and two TDs in 2019.

Reportedly, there are still several teams left in pursuit of Freeman, including Philadelphia Eagles, but neither would want to meet his contract demands. It remains to be seen whether he lowers them as the season progresses or stays true to his intention and hopes for a better market next year.

Just when you thought that 2018 NFL season couldn’t get worse for Atlanta Falcons, they have lost one of their main players in running back Devonta Freeman. Falcons’ head coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Tuesday that the team had placed the 26-year-old Pro Bowler on the injured reserve list.

Following the game against Pittsburgh, where Devonta injured his foot, we thought he was just having general soreness in his groin area,” – said Quinn. “As the week went on, it continued, so we decided to have him get some tests. It has been determined that he will need a procedure that will result in us placing him on injured reserve.

Since Falcons placed him on injured reserve, Devonta Freeman won’t be eligible to return to the roster in the next eight weeks. Still, this doesn’t mean the team ruled him for the season since Quinn remains hopeful that Freeman will play again this season.

We are hopeful he will be able to return this season, but we will have a better feel for that in the coming weeks.” – he added.

Devonta Freeman struggled with injuries since the season started, having issues with his knee, foot, and groin. He managed to play only two games in 2018; managing 14 carries for 68 yards.

Falcons signed Freeman to five-year, $41.25 million extension in August 2017, after he had two consecutive 1,000+ rushing yards season and was named to two Pro Bowls.
