The Milwaukee Brewers lost their ace Devin Williams for the upcoming MLB playoffs due to a bizarre set of circumstances. Williams got carried away celebrating the Brewers winning the NL Central and punched a wall. This caused him to break his hand and will now require surgery.

Williams confirmed the news himself while talking with reporters on Wednesday.

“I’m pretty upset with myself, there’s no one to blame but me,” Williams said. “I feel like I’ve let my team down, our coaching staff, our fans, you know—everyone. I know how big of a role I play on this team and there’s a lot of people counting on me.”

According to Yahoo Sports, Williams didn’t even realize he was dealing with an injury until coming to practice. He felt some discomfort while throwing and underwent an X-ray test that showed the fracture in his throwing hand.

There is a chance that Williams manages to return to the mound in 2021, but the Brewers would have to make the World Series, according to the team’s president of baseball operations David Stearn.

Devin Williams had an outstanding rookie year in shortened 2020 MLB season, winning the NL Rookie of the Year and NL Reliever of the Year honors while also being selected to All-MLB Second Team. Williams picked up where he left off in 2021, posting 2.50 ERA and having 87 strikeouts in 58 games.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ Devin Williams and the Seattle Mariners’ Kyle Lewis were named the National League and American League Rookies of the Year, respectively, as MLB announced on Monday night.

The abbreviated season produced two starring rookies who were bright spots for their teams in what otherwise could have been described as difficult seasons for them.

Williams was arguably the best relief pitcher in all of baseball this year, as he posted a magnificent 0.33 ERA along with 53 strikeouts in 27 innings of work.

The 26-year-old player allowed only one earned run over the entire length of the season, a feat which is hard to even comprehend as his dazzling changeup threw hitters off balance all season long.

Lewis, on the other hand, was the biggest positive for the Mariners in a season in which they missed the playoffs for the nineteenth straight season.

The Georgia native, who recovered from a devastating knee injury shortly after being drafted in 2016, batted .262 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI for Seattle, showing both on-base and power acumen.

Lewis is the first Mariner to win the AL Rookie of the Year award since future Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki did so in 2001.

Expect Lewis and Williams to continue doing big things in the league when it returns next spring.
