The Detroit Wings captain Dylan Larkin has been placed on injured reserve after he was knocked unconscious during his team’s 1-5 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night. Listed with an upper-body injury, Larkin would be unavailable for at least a week, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde confirmed.

Larkin was knocked out when he was cross-checked in the back of the head and neck by the Senators’ Mathieu Joseph. He lay motionless face-down on the ice for about a minute after the collision. Afterward, he was able to lift himself to his feet and leave the ice with assistance. “I think it was a positive that he was able to get up and be helped off the ice rather than on the stretcher,” Lalonde said of his captain.

The Red Wings coach added that he had a 20-minute conversation with Larkin on Sunday night, revealing that the Red Wings’ star was in good spirits during their talk. The 27-year-old will be gravely missed by the Red Wings during his absence as he leads the team with 25 points (11 goals, 14 points).

Veteran winger Patrick Kane has picked out the Detroit Red Wings as his new team. According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, Kane agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million deal with the franchise.

Kane has been a free agent this offseason but opted not to sign with a team until he recovers from a hip surgery he underwent in June. After it became clear he would be able to return to the ice in December, Kane opened talks with several interested teams.

Reportedly, Kane’s priority was to sign with a playoff contender, and he met with the Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins, among other teams. However, he ended up picking out the Red Wings because of their coach, Derek Lalonde, and his ability to play with a former Chicago Blackhawks teammate, Alex DeBrincat.

Kane is expected to provide a big boost for Detroit, adding another playmaker as the team looks to keep up with the leading teams in the Atlantic Division. The Red Wings are currently third with an 11-6-3 record and have six points less than the Bruins, who sit at the top.

Patrick Kane spent almost his entire career with the Blackhawks, helping the franchise win three Stanley Cup championships. He was traded to the New York Rangers ahead of the NHL trade deadline last season. Kane has 451 goals and 786 assists in 1,180 NHL games.

The Detroit Red Wings announced on Monday that they are waiving forward Filip Zadina, their sixth-overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The move comes after the franchise failed to find a trade partner for the 23-year-old player.

Seeing limited action in the 2022-23 NHL season, Zadina asked Red Wings’ front office to trade him this offseason. The team tried to fulfill the player’s wish but was unable to find a suitable deal.

“I tried to find a place for him to play; somebody’s that interested in Filip, maybe give him [a better] opportunity [to play]. I haven’t been able to do that,” Detroit’s general manager Steve Yzerman told reporters. “So, I put him on waivers today; I’m trying to give him the opportunity to go somewhere, an organization, if he wants to play more. We’ll see if that happens.”

Filip Zadina made his NHL debut during the 2018–19 season and has played a total of 190 games with the Red Wings since then. He has 28 goals and 40 assists for a total of 68 points.

Zadina played only 30 games in 2022-23 and was in and out of the lineup while dealing with a lower-body injury. He has two years left on the three-year, $5.475 million extension he signed with Detroit last summer.

After being placed on waivers, Zadina can now be claimed by any NHL team willing to take his contract. If that doesn’t happen and he clears waivers, the Czech Republic will become a free agent.

Dylan Larkin is staying in Detroit, after all. The Red Wings confirmed on Wednesday that Larkin signed a new extension, which will keep him with the franchise for eight more years.

The deal locks Larkin to the Red Wings through the 2030-31 NHL season and is worth $69.6 million with an average annual value of $8.7 million. The 26-year-old player, who has 57 points in 59 games this season, was previously set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer.

Larkin and the Red Wings have been engaged in contract talks for a while but couldn’t agree on the financial terms and seemed to have hit an impasse in early February. Larkin was reportedly looking to get around $9 million annually, while the Red Wings didn’t want to go further than $8.4 million per year. It appears that the two sides simply decided to meet in the middle and wrap up the negotiations sooner than later.

The agreement ensures that Dylan Larkin spends the prime of his career with the franchise that drafted him 15th overall in 2014. Since then, the Michigan native has made three All-Star games and is currently serving as the Red Wings captain. He has 169 goals and 246 assists in 563 NHL games.

The Detroit Red Wings are heading in a new direction on the head coaching position after seven seasons under Jeff Blashill. This comes after the franchise opted not to renew Blashill’s contract past this season.

The Red Wings ended the 2021-22 NHL campaign with a 32-40-10 record, missing out on the Stanley Cup playoffs. This was the sixth straight time Detroit didn’t make the postseason under Blashill.

Speaking about the decision in a press conference on Monday, Detroit’s general manager Steve Yzerman said that Blashill “did an outstanding job leading this team.” However, Yzerman felt that the team “fundamentally regressed” this season and believed a new voice in the locker room would bring a positive change.

Jeff Blashill joined the Red Wings organization in 2011 as an assistant before taking over the AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins as a head coach one year later. Blashill was a success with the Griffins, leading them to a Calder Cup trophy in his first season. After three years in AHL, he was promoted to be the head coach of the Red Wings following Mike Babcock’s departure to the Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of the 2015-17 NHL season.

Blashill made the playoffs in his first season in charge, but things soon went south. Detroit embarked on a rebuild, and Blashill was often left to do the best he could with limited personnel. This resulted in a six-year postseason drought during which the Red Wings never finished higher than fifth in the Atlantic Division.

Detroit Red Wings’ rebuild just got a significant boost as the team managed to lock star forward Anthony Mantha to a long-term deal.

Red Wings announced on Tuesday that they have signed Mantha to a new four-year contract that will keep him with the franchise through 2023/24. This is the first deal longer than two years that Detroit’s general manager Steve Yzerman handed out during his tenure.

Reportedly, Mantha’s new deal will net him $5.7 million annually and $22.8 million in the next four years.

“Everyone knows we’re in a rebuilding phase,” said Mantha after inking the extension. “Him signing me to a four-year deal also tells me he sees me as part of the future of the team, part of the guys that are going to help the team win, and that is the pressure that comes with it.”

Anthony Mantha has been a star in the making for Red Wings ever since making his NHL debut during the 2016/17 NHL seasons. Although he has some struggles with injuries, Mantha managed to keep consistent productions and already has 173 points (84 goals and 89 assists) in 260 career NHL appearances.

Red Wings now hope that he can take a step further next season and firmly establish himself as one of their key players. If this happens, there is no doubt that Detroit will soon have a competitive NHL team once again.

New York Rangers announced over the weekend that they have traded veteran defenseman Marc Staal to Detroit Red Wings. The Rangers will send Stall and a second-round draft pick in 2021 to Detroit while receiving future consideration in return.

The Rangers were motivated to execute the trade in order to move Staal’s $5.7 million salary off their books. The rebuilding Red Wings, on the other hand, are stockpiling draft picks, and this was a great opportunity to add some more with the help of their unused cap space.

Staal leaves New York after spending all of his 13 years in the NFL with the Rangers.

“I would like to thank Marc for everything he has given to the New York Rangers during his 13 seasons with the team,” said general manager Jeff Gorton in a statement. “The success we had throughout Marc’s tenure, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final, would not have been possible without his tireless efforts on and off the ice. The respect we have for Marc is immeasurable, and we wish him and his family all the best.”

Marc Staal made his NHL debut with the Rangers in 2007 and has since played close to 900 regular-season games with the organization. Staal contributed 188 points (43 points and 145 assists) during that time while helping the team to two conference finals and one Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2014.

Although Canadian winger Robby Fabbri has been with the Detroit Red Wings for less than one season, he hopes to have a long future with them.

Fabbri came to Detroit in November from the St. Louis Blues and he’ll be a restricted free agent in the offseason and he hasn’t started contract negotiations with the Red Wings. If he gets a good offer, Fabbri is prepared to accept it.

“Everything has been great since the first day I came to Detroit,” the 24-year-old player told The Detroit News on Wednesday. “It’s a great organization, great group of guys, a great opportunity here, so it’s definitely a place I want to be and play for as long as I can… I was able to rejuvenate my career and they gave me a chance. I couldn’t be happier.”

Fabbri finally managed to get his career back on track since arriving in Detroit; he suffered several injury-riddled seasons with the Blues. While with the Red Wings from 2019/2020 he played 52 games and scored 14 goals and 17 assists which makes this season his best since 2015/2016.

“I was able to rejuvenate my career and they gave me a chance. I couldn’t be happier,” he added.

Unfortunately, Fabbri won’t be able to add to his resume in 2019/2020 because the Red Wings have a 17-49-5 record and didn’t qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. The NHL has decided to resume its activities by ending the regular season and going straight to the postseason with 22 teams and an in-play tournament.

Back in 2014, Fabbri was a first-round pick and he has played in 216 NHL games, scoring 46 goals and 58 assists. He won a Stanley Cup with the Blues last season.

Despite missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year, Detroit Red Wings believe that their coach Jeff Blashill deserves more time to turn things around. This is why the team decided to give Blashill a two-year extension and show him a vote of confidence during franchise’s ongoing rebuilding process.

Red Wings currently sit at the 6th place in Atlantic Division with a 32-38-10 record.

According to Detroit’s general manager Ken Holland, Blashill has kept the Red Wings competitive despite all the obstacles he faces.

“Jeff has done a tremendous job developing our young talent as we continue to rebuild our organization,” – said Holland in a statement. “Our young players have made significant strides during his time as head coach and are playing important minutes in key situations. As we continue to build toward the future, we have the utmost confidence that Jeff is the coach best suited to help our prospects become impactful NHL players.”

Jeff Blashill was named Detroit Red Wings head coach in 2015 after Mike Babcock left the organization to join Toronto Maple Leafs. In his first season Blashill managed to get the team to playoffs, where they were eliminated in the First Round having won only one game.  The following three years, however, proved to be struggling for the franchise as they decided to turn focus to their younger players and entered a full rebuild.

Blashill, who was also a member of Team USA on four occasions so far, has a head coaching record of 136-143-47.

The Florida Panthers came back from three goals down to force the game against the Detroit Red Wings to overtime Monday night before winning 4-3 in a shootout.

Jonathan Huberdeau scored the only goal in the shootout after a long night that saw Florida almost lose a game to the struggling Red Wings.

“We showed some resiliency and we stuck to our plan” Coach Bob Boughner said. “We told the guys after the first period that we weren’t bad, but they got some breaks and they ended up in our net.”

Florida’s goals all came from different players: Jared McCann, Henrik Borgsrtrom and Jayce Hawryluk. But that was not before replacing goalie Robert Luongo who allowed the three goals conceded. James Reiner replaced him and blocked all 12 attempts from the Red Wings.

“Obviously it was a pretty bad first period and Lou got hung out dry. We really pushed in the second period, though, and got ourselves back into the game,” Reimer said. “They have some great guys for the shootout; I’ve faced them enough to know.”

Detroit’s goals came from Andreas Athanasiou, Nyquist and Thomas Vanek.

Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Kings scored the winning goal in overtime to beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in Denver. Rangers beat the Blues 2-1 while the Nashville Predators beat the Washington Capitals 6-3 to end a six-game losing streak.
