The Detroit Lions have locked a pair of their key players for the foreseeable future. According to multiple reports, the Lions signed wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell to long-term extensions.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that St. Brown received a four-year, $120 million deal. His salary of $30 million annually makes him one of the highest-paid WRs in the league, while the deal comes with $77 million in guaranteed money, a record amount given to a wideout.

Sewell, on the other hand, received a four-year, $112 million extension with $85 million guaranteed. This makes Sewell the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

Amon-Ra St. Brown entered the league as the Lions’ fourth-round selection in 2021. After a promising rookie year, he had a Pro Bowl campaign in 2022 before reaching new heights last season. St. Brown finished 2023 with 119 catches for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns, all career highs. He earned his second Pro Bowl nod and a First-Team All-Pro selection.

Penei Sewell was also drafted in 2021, being a seventh overall pick. Since then, Sewell started all but one game while establishing himself as one of the best left tackles in the league. He has two Pro Bowl and one First-team All-Pro selection on his resume.

Former Detroit Lions defensive end Romeo Okwara will take a break from football after playing eight years as a pro. Okwara, who turns 29 in June, announced on social media that he decided to “step away” from the NFL.

Okwara played 16 games with the Lions in 2023, making nine tackles, 2.0 sacks, and five QB hits. He became a free agent at the end of the season.

“After some introspection and meditation, I have decided to step away from the NFL,” Okwara wrote on Instagram while posting a series of photos that chronicled his career. “The game of football has been the largest part of my life for the greater of 18 years, 8 of which I have been fortunate enough to play at the professional level … I am excited for what’s next as I navigate this crazy transition away from the game”

Romeo Okwara signed with the New York Giants in 2016 as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame. He had a promising rookie season, playing 16 games and making four starts, but ended up missing the majority of his sophomore year while dealing with a knee sprain. He was released by the Giants ahead of the 2018 season and claimed on waivers by the Lions shortly after.

During his first three years with the Lions, Okwara emerged as an important part of the team’s defense. He had his best campaign in 2020 when he made 10.0 sacks to go with 44 tackles and three forced fumbles. However, a series of injuries limited his impact since then, and he has been mostly used as a rotational piece in recent years.

The Detroit Lions released veteran safety Tracy Walker III on Tuesday. The team confirmed the move via their official social media pages.

Releasing Walker will result in $5.5 million salary cap savings for the Lions. He had one year left on his contract and was set to earn $7.95 million in base salary in 2024.

Walker played in all 17 games last season, making six starts. He finished the campaign with 59 tackles, 1.0 sacks, two passes defended, and one forced fumble.

After the news was made official, Walker shared a goodbye note to Lions fans on Instagram.

“I want to thank my fans and supporters for always having my back through it all. I want to thank the city for holding down for me,” he wrote.

With Walker out of the building, the Lions find themselves short on a safety position, considering that starter C.J. Gardner-Johnson is headed to free agency. They currently have former corner Ifeatu Melifonwu and 2022’s third-year player Kerby Joseph as the only remaining safeties on the roster.

The Lions selected Tracy Walker III with the third-round pick in 2018. He was a strong presence in the team’s secondary throughout his first four seasons as a pro, but an ACL injury in 2022 derailed his career. Walker compiled 398 tackles, 4.0 sacks, 23 passes defended, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles in 79 games with the franchise.

The San Francisco 49ers were not going to be denied. Despite facing a 17-point deficit at the halftime of the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, the 49ers managed to rally back and claim a 34-31 win that will see them return to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers will now face Kansas City in Super Bowl LVIII, a rematch between the two teams that faced each other in Super Bowl LIV.

Despite entering the game as big favorites, the 49ers quickly got picked apart by the Lions’ high-octane offense. The Detroit team scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added 10 more points in the second. Meanwhile, San Francisco managed to put just seven points on the board to finish the half down 24-7.

However, the second half saw a completely different game. The 49ers came out on the field with new-found resilience, and it immediately got them going. After scoring a field goal on their first drive of the third quarter, their second drive finished with quarterback Brock Purdy finding wideout Brandon Aiyuk in the endzone to make it a one-possession game.

From that point onward, the 49ers got into a rhythm, scoring on three more consecutive possessions.

Their defense also stepped up, closing the lanes for the Lions and keeping them scoreless for much of the second half.

The Lions managed to punch in another touchdown to make it 34-31 with less than a minute left of the clock. However, Detroit’s onside kick failed, allowing the 49ers to run down the clock and keep their Super Bowl hopes alive.

“The guys didn’t want today to be the last day,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan after the game.

The 49ers are now looking for their first Super Bowl win since 1994. They have made two Super Bowls since then but lost in both.

The Detroit Lions are one step closer to their first Super Bowl appearance. The Lions faced a resilient Tampa Bay Buccaneers team in the NFL Divisional Round on Sunday and came out with a 31-23 win to advance to the NFC Championship.

This is the first time since the 1991 season that the Lions reached the NFC Championship game and only the second time in franchise history. The Lions won four NFL championships, but they all came before the Super Bowl era.

The Bucs went toe to with the Lions throughout the first three quarters, and it seemed like they could come up with another upset after previously eliminating the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card. However, the Lions stepped it up in the fourth quarter, scoring two quick touchdowns to make it 17-31

Tampa Bay gave themselves a chance by putting six points on the board with a 75-yard touchdown drive that also included a failed two-point conversion. The Bucs got the ball back with 1:59 left on the clock, but their final drive ended after two plays thanks to an interception by Lions’ linebacker Derrick Barnes.

The Lions will now travel to Levi’s Stadium next Sunday to face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

The Detroit Lions defeated the Minnesota Vikings 30-24 win on Sunday to win their first NFC North Division title since 1993. The Lions had ended the league’s longest division title drought after the Cleveland Browns, who have not won since 1989.

“It’s cool. It really is cool,” quarterback Jared Goff exclaimed after the Lions ended their three-decade winless streak. “Being able to really reflect on it like we did something that [hadn’t been done by] team after team after team for 30 years. This 2023 team did it and broke that streak and we will guarantee a home playoff game. But, yeah, we’ve got some work to do next week and the following and see where we go.”

Now, the Lions will direct their focus to Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Detroit will look to continue its winning ways as they prepare for their first playoff game since 2016. Furthermore, they’ll be looking for their first playoff victory since 1993.

The Detroit Lions’ backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will see out the 2023 NFL season and then ride off into the sunset. The 31-year-old player revealed his intention to retire in an interview with the Detroit Free Press.

Bridgewater signed a one-year deal with the Lions in the offseason to back starter Jared Goff. He made an appearance in only one game in 2023, kneeling three times to close out the 42-24 win over the Carolina Panthers.

According to Bridgewater, he thought about retiring after last season, but Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell convinced him to return for another run. And even if he didn’t get to play, Bridgewater says he doesn’t regret the decision.

“Whatever was meant for me, it played out the exact way it was meant,” Bridgewater said. “And I’m still with that mindset every day, and I’m just really appreciative that I’m in Year 10. I tell everyone this is my last year, so I’m in my final year, and I’m just enjoying it all, man.”

Teddy Bridgewater started his pro career as the last selection of the first round in 2014 by the Minnesota Vikings. He made a Pro Bowl in his sophomore year after leading the Vikings to an 11−5 record. However, a freak knee injury at team practice during the 2016 offseason halted his rise to stardom and caused him to miss almost two full seasons.

Bridgewater later resumed his career and had stints with the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately, he never returned to his pre-injury level, which likely played a role in retiring during what are considered prime years for quarterbacks.

Bridgewater revealed that he intends to stay involved in football and plans to coach a high school football team.

The Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. announced on Tuesday that he will be “stepping away” from the Detroit Lions as he looks to take care of some “personal family matters”. Following his announcement, the Lions confirmed that they had released him from the team; a standard procedure in this situation.

“I just want to say that I have so much love and respect for the Ford Family, the city of Detroit, my teammates and coaches,” Jones stated on social media. “To be brief, I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters. Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar.”

Having spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, this season marked Jones’ return to Detroit. He previously played for the Lions from 2016 until 2020. Over his 12 seasons in the NFL, Jones has amassed 547 receptions for 7,421 yards and 58 touchdowns in 151 games.

The Detroit Lions solidified their quarterback position with veteran signal-caller Teddy Bridgewater. The team reportedly added Bridgewater to a one-year deal with the intention of making him their backup quarterback behind starter Jared Goff.

Bridgewater spent the 2022 campaign with the Miami Dolphins, playing in five games, including two starts. He completed 62.0 percent of his passes while throwing for 683 yards, four touchdowns, and four picks.

It was no secret that the Lions wanted to get a proven quarterback option in the building. The team expects to be competitive this year and wanted someone that could win them games even if Goff gets injured. Bridgewater, with his experience as a high-end backup, fits the description.

With Bridgewater on their roster, the Lions will likely move away from veteran Nate Sudfeld. They also have this year’s third-round pick Hendon Hooker on their roster, but the Tennessee product is currently recovering from an ACL injury.

Teddy Bridgewater started his career with the Minnesota Vikings, who took him with the final pick of the first round in the 2014 NFL Draft. Bridgewater ended up winning the starting job early in his rookie season before leading the Vikings to an 11-5 record in his sophomore year and earning a Pro Bowl nod.

Bridgewater’s pro career came to a halt after he suffered a serious knee injury during the 2016 offseason. After two years away from football, he left Minnesota and spent time with the New Orleans Saints, the Carolina Panthers, and the Denver Broncos.

Veteran wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. will suit up for the Detroit Lions once again. After spending the past two years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones decided to reunite with the Lions and inked a one-year deal with the franchise.

Jones will reportedly get a $3 million base salary while getting a chance to earn an additional $2 million in incentives. The 33-year-old player played in 16 games for the Jags last season, catching 46 passes for 529 yards and three touchdowns.

Prior to signing with Jacksonville in 2021, Jones played five years with the Lions and was one of the team’s key receivers. In 69 games with the franchise, which included 67 starts, he made 289 receptions for 4,296 yards and 36 TDs. The former fifth-round pick spent his early NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

By getting Jones back in the building, the Lions will boost depth on the wideout position that has taken a hit after DJ Chark left in free agency to play with the Carolina Panthers. Jones is expected to be in contention for the team’s third option on the WR position behind last year’s first-round pick Jameson Williams and standout wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Brown.
