After being released by the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this month, Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr has got a head start on all the other signal-callers looking for a new team in 2023. However, this doesn’t mean that Carr will speed up the process or skip the necessary steps.

Carr visited the New Orleans Saints and the New York Jets in recent weeks, but according to his brother David Carr, Derek’s free agency will be “a long process.”

“He had a great trip, but it’s honestly going to be a long process, though,” David Carr, who also played in NFL as a quarterback, told NFL Network. “He really only has the Saints, the Raiders, and the Jets to kind of compare those three places. So he wants to do his due diligence and see as many places as he can to get a feel for what the best place for him will be.”

It makes sense for Derek Carr to take time with his decision, as several other QB-needy teams besides the Saints and the Jets are expected to be interested in his services. The Carolina Panthers have already reached out to the 31-year-old plater to see his level of interest, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are believed to have significant interest. The more teams get involved, the more chances Carr will have to get the biggest contract and land in the best situation.

Carr finished the 2022 season with 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He has four career Pro Bowl nods and has led the Raiders to the playoffs twice since taking over as the franchise’s starter in 2014 as a rookie.

The Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Derek Carr will part ways this offseason, but it likely won’t come as a result of a trade. According to the NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Carr informed the Raiders that he wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause to join another team. The franchise is now expected to release the veteran before his contract guarantee kicks in.

The Raiders have previously worked out a trade framework with several interested teams. Carr held talks with some of them and even visited the Saints but ended up deciding he wasn’t interested in helping the Las Vegas team extract some value for him.

If Carr remains on the Raiders’ roster past February 15th, more than $40 million of his contract in the upcoming two seasons will become guaranteed. With the head coach Josh McDaniels and the front office deciding they want to have a new signal caller and Carr not accepting the trade, the only viable choice for the franchise is to let him walk away for nothing.

Derek Carr spent the past nine years as the Raiders’ starting QB. He led the franchise to two playoff appearances and earned four Pro Bowl nods. The 31-year-old player finished the 2022 season throwing for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

If he becomes a free agent, Carr is expected to have significant interest from QB-needy teams. The list will likely include the Saints, the New York Jets, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among other teams.

Many things are changing inside the Las Vegas Raiders organization ahead of the 2022 NFL season, but a quarterback won’t be one of them. The franchise just announced that their signal-caller Derek Carr signed a multi-year contract extension with the franchise.

Carr had one year at a $19.87 million base salary left on his old deal but had no guaranteed money. According to multiple reports, he now gets three extra years and an additional $121.5 million. The 31-year-old player will also get a no-trade clause as part of the deal.

Carr had a productive 2021 campaign, throwing for career-high 4,804 passing yards and adding 23 touchdowns. He also led the Raiders to a 10-7 record in a tough AFC West division and playoff appearance.

Despite this, reports indicated that Carr might be on the go due to the arrival of a new front office and coaching staff. Some believed that team’s new Josh McDaniels would opt for a fresh start at the position and bring in a quarterback that better fits his system. However, it seems like this was nothing more than a rumor as McDaniels seems all-in on Fresno product.

“Derek Carr has been the leader of this franchise for a long time, and we are thrilled to continue that relationship moving forward,” said McDaniels after the news about Carr’s extension became official. “He has been a great example of someone who always puts the team first, and we appreciate his desire to keep doing that while leading on and off the field.”

Derek Carr was the Raiders’ second-round pick in 2014. He was given the starting job in his rookie season, and since then, he only missed two regular-season games. Carr, who made the Pro Bowl team three times, passed for 31,700 yards, 193 touchdowns, and 85 interceptions since entering the league.

If the Las Vegas Raiders decide to trade quarterback Derek Carr at some point, don’t expect the 30-year-old veteran to suit up for another team with a smile on his face. As a matter of fact, don’t expect him to suit up at all.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Carr reiterated his intention to remain a Raider his whole career and said that he would rather walk away from football than play for a different team.

“I’d probably quit football if I had to play for somebody else,” said Carr. “I am a Raider for my entire life. I’m going to root for one team for the rest of my life—it’s the Raiders.”

The 2021 NFL offseason was marked with several high-profile QBs, including the Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson and Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers being unhappy with their current teams and demanding a trade. When asked why he remained silent despite not being in an ideal situation as well, Carr attributed it to his “old-school mentality”.

“Whether we’ve won enough or not, I literally give every bit of energy and effort that I can to this organization, and when I sign a contract, I completely, in my mind, have to fulfill that. I committed to that. I put my name on paper,” he explained.

Carr has been a rather consistent performer for the Raiders since taking over the starting job in 2014 and holds the franchise records for most passing yards with 26,896 and touchdown passes (170). But his stats didn’t result in wins for the team, as Carr compiled four losing seasons and a 47-63 record as a starter.

There is an increasing number of NFL players who are opting out of the 2020 NFL season due to coronavirus pandemic concerns, but Las Vegas Raiders’ starting quarterback Derek Carr won’t be one of them. And he has an interesting reason for it.

According to Carr, who had a chat with reporters on Tuesday, he wants to play this season in order to prove the people who doubted him wrong as he’s “tired of being disrespected.”

“Did I think about opting out? I did not,” said Carr. “I have a lot to prove to myself. I’m going to be completely honest with you. I’m tired of being disrespected. There was no question I was going to play this year.”

While it’s admirable that Carr wants to prove himself this year, the reality is that the fair share of criticism aimed towards him is legit. Since becoming the Raiders’ starter in 2014, he only led the team to one winning season. Also, his 55 losses during that time span are second-worst for any starting QB in their first six seasons under center.

To be fair, there are some indications that Derek Carr might turn around his career. He put up respectable numbers in 2019, posting his completing 70.4 percent of his passes for career-high 4,054 yards. He also added 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Still, Carr will have to do even better this year if he wants to keep his job. Raiders brought in Marcus Mariota in the offseason as a competition for the 29-year-old QB, and head coach Jon Gruden won’t be afraid to make a switch at the position if things don’t start well for his team.

There will be a number of NFL teams looking to draft a quarterback in this year’s draft, but don’t expect Las Vegas Raiders to be one of them. According to the team’s general manager Mike Mayock, Raiders “feel really good” about the players that they have on the position.

There has been a lot of talk about the Raiders’ QB position ever since Jon Gruden took over the team in 2018. The starter Derek Carr has had its ups and downs, and the team reportedly entertained the idea of trading him. According to rumors, they were also one of the teams interested in Tom Brady before he signed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Still, the Raiders ended up settling on just bringing a veteran competition for Carr in former Tennessee Titans’ signal-caller Marcus Mariota, and believe they now have a strong QB core.

“We’re very appreciative to have Derek Carr,” said Mayock during a conference call with reporters on Tuesday. “Jon [Gruden’s] offense, he’s going into year three of it. Marcus Mariota, Jon and I both know him very, very well. We feel really good about the quarterback position.”

Mariota, who was Titans’ second overall pick in 2015, signed with Raiders this offseason hoping to bounce back after a season in which he was benched for Ryan Tannehill. Mayock believes that he’ll get the chance to redeem himself with Raiders.

“He wants to become the best version of Marcus Mariota that he can become, and that’s the way we look at it. Let’s see who the best Marcus Mariota is, and in the meantime, we love what we have with Derek Carr,” he added.

Raiders ended the 2019 season 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the fifth time during Derek Carr’s reign at QB. However, what allowed Carr to keep his starting position is increased production, as he delivered one of his most statistically impressive seasons as a pro. He finished the year with 70.4 percent pass completion while throwing for 4,054 yards, 21 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Oakland Raiders’ starting quarterback Derek Carr has been struggling with consistency in the past few seasons which made him a target for multiple trade rumors in recent months. Still, it looks like the team doesn’t have the intention to make a change at the position as Raiders’ head coach Jon Gruden confirmed Carr will continue to be his starting QB.

“Yeah. He’s going to be our quarterback,” – Gruden told the NFL Network’s Jim Trotter. “I’m not going to address all the rumors. I could care less about the rumors. He threw for 4,100 yards. Threw for almost 70 percent in a very dire, tough circumstance. So I’ve got a lot of confidence in Carr; what he can do with Antonio Brown, with Tyrell Williams, with Trent Brown coming in here to help our offensive line.”

Although Oakland Raiders finished the year with 4-12, Derek Carr had statistically one of his better seasons in 2018 since becoming a pro. He threw for 4,049 yards and 19 touchdowns but also had 10 interceptions.

Despite confirming that Carr will be the team’s starting QB in 2019, Gruden doesn’t deny that the Raiders will meet with top rated QB prospects in the upcoming NFL Draft including Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins.

“Yes we are. We’re going to meet with a lot of guys at every position,” – he added. “We’re not going to look past anybody at any position. We have the fourth pick in this draft and we’re going to make sure we get it right.”
