The New York Jets have traded quarterback Zach Wilson to the Denver Broncos. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Jets will receive a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft in exchange for Wilson.

As part of the agreement, the Jets will also send a seventh-round selection to the Broncos while paying an unspecified portion of Wilson’s $5.5 million salary in 2024.

The Jets selected Wilson with a second-overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft with the intention to make him their quarterback of the future. However, throughout the three years that Wilson spent with the franchise, it became obvious he wasn’t for the role.

Wilson struggled in his first two seasons as a pro, being benched several times due to poor play. The Jets then decided to trade for star quarterback Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2023 season and demoted Wilson to backup in hopes he would benefit from being mentored by a future Hall of Famer.

Rodgers ended up tearing his Achilles in the first game of the season, forcing the Jets to turn to Wilson once again. While Wilson showed flashes of talent, he once again failed to demonstrate consistency and lost the starting job in favor of journeyman Tim Boyle at one point as the Jets looked for ways to salvage their campaign.

Wilson leaves the Jets with a 13-21 record as a starter and has thrown for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions.

The Broncos, who released veteran signal-caller Russell Wilson in the offseason, will hope that Wilson can improve with the change of scenery and perhaps stabilize their QB position. However, even if that doesn’t happen, it won’t be too awful of a move, considering they haven’t invested much.

The Denver Broncos resumed their busy offseason on Saturday by agreeing to trade wideout Jerry Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns. Reportedly, the Browns gave up a fifth-rounder and a sixth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft to get Jeudy.

Jeudy is just one of several veteran players that the Broncos moved on from this week. They informed quarterback Russell Wilson that he will be released after the new league year starts while also moving on from All-Pro safety Justin Simmons and tight end Chris Manhertz.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos cleared around $50 million in salary cap space with their recent moves.

Jerry Jeudy entered the league as the Broncos’ 15th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. After starting his pro career slower than expected, Jeudy had a promising season in 2022, when he made 67 catches for 972 yards and six touchdowns. However, he failed to build on it in 2023, finishing the campaign with 54 receptions for 758 yards and only two TDs.

Jeudy is still considered a player with a high upside, which is probably why the Browns jumped on the opportunity to acquire him. He is expected to challenge for the role of No. 2 wideout in Cleveland behind Pro Bowler Amari Cooper.

The Denver Broncos released veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and paid a hefty price to do it. By cutting Wilson, the Broncos will take an $85 million dead cap hit, which stands as an NFL record.

“Of behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career,” said Broncos head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton in a joint statement.

Being stuck in quarterback purgatory ever since Peyton Manning retired in 2016, the Broncos decided to orchestrate a blockbuster trade for Wilson with the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2022 season. The Broncos sent a massive package of assets to Seattle as part of the deal, including two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, and three players. They then signed Wilson to a five-year, $245 million extension, one that was yet to kick in before he was cut.

In his first year with the Broncos, Wilson had arguably his worst season since entering the league, completing 60.5% of his passes for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He improved in 2023 after Payton took over but still failed to justify the investment Denver made in him. The Broncos even benched Wilson to prevent his salary for 2025 from becoming guaranteed.

The Broncos will now embark on a search for a new quarterback once again and will have limited assets to acquire one. They are dealing with a limited cap to be able to attract top free agent signal callers, while their No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft isn’t considered high enough to give them a chance to nab one of the top QB prospects.

Wilson, on the other hand, will likely attract attention from teams looking for a bridge quarterback. Despite his struggles in recent years, he showed that he can still be a capable starter and will also come on a cheap deal.

The consensus around the league is that the Denver Broncos will move from veteran quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason. However, it appears that Wilson is still holding on to hope that he will get an opportunity to play for the franchise in 2024.

The Broncos decided to bench Wilson towards the end of the 2023 campaign in order to avoid him getting injured, which would cause his 2025 salary to become guaranteed. This was preceded by a contract dispute between the two sides, with Denver asking Wilson to remove the injury guarantee to continue playing and the player refusing.

Despite everything that happened, it appears that Wilson doesn’t feel any resentment for the Broncos.

“I’ve got more fire than ever, honestly, especially over the past two years and what I’ve gone through,” Wilson said during his appearance on the I Am Athlete podcast. “Whether it’s in Denver or somewhere else, I hope it’s in Denver. I hope I get to finish there. I committed there. I wanted to be there. I want to be there.”

Wilson explained that he hopes he can add to his legacy and win at least a couple more Super Bowls before calling it quits.

“I love the city and everything else, but you also want to be in a place that loves you, too,” he added.

Wilson threw for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 2023 as the Broncos finished the season 8-9 and missed the playoffs for the eighth consecutive time.

Denver Broncos’ rollercoaster 2023 campaign took another unexpected turn. Head coach Sean Payton announced on Wednesday that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson will be benched for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Wilson’s backup, Jarrett Stidham, will start under center. Stidham only played four snaps this season but hasn’t attempted a single pass.

Speaking about the decision, Payton said that he made the move to bench Wilson because he wanted to get a “spark” on offense.

“I understand all the speculation and everything that surrounds a move like that,” Payton said. “I can tell you — look, we’re desperately trying to win.”

Despite what Payton was saying, many took Wilson’s benching as a sign that his time with the franchise might be over. According to multiple reports, the former Pro Bowler would get another $37 million in guaranteed money on his already massive deal if he can’t pass his physical in March. Considering they are already in a tough salary cap situation, the Broncos desperately want to avoid that.

Wilson has yet to start the five-year, $242.6 million extension he signed with the Broncos in 2022. If Denver opts to release him, they would have to swallow up a total of $85 million in dead cap space in the next two seasons. As daunting as this sounds, it appears that Payton and the Broncos’ front office are thinking about that.

Wilson is playing better in 2023 compared to last season but is still far from his best days. The 35-year-old player has thrown for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Despite their struggles early in the 2023 NFL campaign, the Denver Broncos are showing they can keep up with the best teams in football. After beating the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9, the Broncos now got a huge 24-22 win over the favored Buffalo Bills as well.

The Broncos didn’t play at their best but benefited from mistake-riddled Bills, who had four turnovers and essentially handed them the win in the final seconds of the game.

Trailing 21-22, the Broncos received the ball at their own 25 yards with 1:55 left on the clock. Quarterback Russell Wilson and the offense made their way to Buffalo’s 23 yards to set up a potential game-winning field goal for their kicker Wil Lutz.

Lutz sent his 41-yarder wide right, and it seemed like it was over for the Broncos. However, it turned out that the Bills had too many men on the field for the play, and Lutz had a do-over. He made no mistake on his second attempt, drilling the ball between the uprights.

The win now has the Broncos at 4-5 and dreaming about a potential playoff run. It is something that seemed impossible after the first six weeks when Denver was 1-5.

“We believe in each other. We believe in what we can do,” said quarterback Russell Wilson after the game. “To beat the Chiefs, to beat these guys, it sets a standard of who we should be, who we can be, and who we are going to be.”

The Bulls, on the other hand, have some soul-searching to do. Despite being considered one of the Super Bowl favorites ahead of the season, they are currently 5-5 and face a tough challenge to turn their fortunes.

The Denver Broncos are continuing to offload veteran pass rushers amid a disappointing start of the season. The Broncos confirmed on Friday that the team released Pro Bowl outside linebacker Frank Clark, with the move coming less than a week after the franchise moved on from defensive end Randy Gregory.

Clark’s release was expected, considering that the 30-year-old player recently restructured his contract in order to make it more tradable. However, the Broncos didn’t manage to find a deal they liked, so they decided to simply cut him.

Clark leaves the Broncos after playing only two games due to injuries and contributing with two tackles. He signed with the franchise in June, inking a one-year, $5.45 million deal.

The Broncos are 1-5 to start the 2023 campaign and probably want to give their younger players more snaps as they already look towards the next season. They previously traded Gregory to the San Francisco 49ers and reportedly still haven’t finished making moves.

Frank Clark should attract quite a lot of interest on the free agent market, considering his experience and track record in the league. Prior to coming to Denver, Clark played four seasons apiece with the Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs. He has 58.5 career sacks with these two franchises while also having three Pro Bowl nods, and two Super Bowl rings on his resume.

Sources revealed to ESPN on Wednesday that the Denver Broncos have decided to release Randy Gregory from his contract. This brings an end to any hopes for the outside linebacker to become a start in the team.

Gregory signed a five-year, $70 million contract in March 2022, at which point he hoped to become an elite pass-rusher. With a $14 million base salary this season and another $5 million during the next season. His tenure at the Broncos deteriorated quickly, however, with the player and his representatives asking for a release from his Broncos contract earlier this week.

This season, the Broncos have been near the bottom of the league in almost every defensive category. Still, Gregory has had limited involvement, with the player being pulled from the starting lineup against the Chicago Bears last week. This season, he has just nine tackles in four games and one sack.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was carted off of his team’s practice session on Thursday after incurring a right hamstring injury. “It’s a hamstring,” Broncos coach Sean Payton confirmed following the incident, adding, “We’ll get an MRI and see where he’s at with it.” The wide receiver is expected to be sidelined for several weeks as a result.

Jeudy has become the fifth wide receiver for the Broncos who may be sidelined over the medium- to long-term. Tim Patrick is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, KJ Hamler is dealing with a heart ailment, Jalen Virgil suffered a knee injury, and Brendan Johnson recently returned to practice on Thursday after missing several weeks with a leg injury.

Last season, Jeudy missed three games as a result of an ankle injury. He also dealt with a hamstring setback during the off-season workouts leading to the 2022 season. He also briefly missed out on the past off-season with a thigh injury.

Denver Broncos’ veteran wideout Tim Patrick suffered a torn Achilles during practice on Monday and will require season-ending surgery. The news was confirmed by Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton during a press conference on Tuesday.

Patrick got hurt while participating in a 7-on-7 drill. It was a non-contact injury as he fell down on the ground after making a cut.

This will be the second consecutive season Patrick will miss due to an injury. He tore his ACL during the 2022 training camp and was only recently cleared to return to football activities at full capacity.

“I think the hard thing, and I said it yesterday, for a player that’s spent most of his offseason rehabbing, and then all of the sudden to hit a roadblock,” Payton told reporters. “He sounded better last night. He’s tough-minded. He’s a real good leader.”

Losing Patrick is a tough blow for the Broncos, considering they will be without 2020’s second-round pick K.J. Hamler for an extended period as well. Hamler is dealing with a heart condition and is expected to miss several weeks before being able to return to action.

Tim Patrick went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft before having brief stints with the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. He later landed on the Broncos’ practice squad but had to wait until the 2018 season to make his pro debut. Since then, he has played 55 games with the franchise and made 143 catches for 2,009 yards and 12 touchdowns.
