Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) to win the 2023 China Open. This is the first time that the Italian has managed to beat the second-seeded Russian in seven outings.

“Daniil, thanks for letting me win at least one match,” Sinner joked during his victory speech. “We have had some very tough battles, especially this year. Thanks for making me a much better player. I have been training a lot to beat you.”

While Sinner did well to perform his groundstrokes consistently, he proved particularly lethal with his service game, winning over 70% of his second services. The Italian enjoyed a strong performance throughout the tournament, defeating world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz to book his place in the final.

ATP world number 3 Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios both withdrew from the Citi Open in Washington, tournament organizers confirmed on Wednesday. The tournament is largely viewed as a warm-up leading to the US Open Grand Slam.

Medvedev, who lifted the US Open trophy in 2021, has exhibited fine form this season, winning tournaments in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai, Miami, and Rome since the start of 2023. The Russian player made it to the semifinals of Wimbledon where he was eliminated by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Kyrgios, the defending Citi Open champion, has suffered a slew of injuries this season to his knee, foot, and wrist. As a result, he has only managed to appear in one match; a loss in straight sets at the Stuttgart Open in June.

Medvedev and Kyrgios previously met in the 2019 final of the Citi Open, where Kyrgios won the tournament for the first time. The Citi Open runs from July 31 to August 6, while the US Open gets underway in New York City on August 28.

The first round of the 2023 French Open already delivered a huge upset. Daniil Medvedev, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, has been eliminated from Roland Garros by No. 172-ranked Thiago Seyboth Wild.

Seyboth Wild, playing in his first French Open, got the first set before dropping the next two. He started experiencing cramps in the third set, at which point it seemed that Medvedev was cruising to victory.

But the 23-year-old Brazilian wasn’t about to let the biggest victory of his career slip. He overcame the cramps and went on to dominate the remaining two sets and send Medvedev packing.

Seyboth Wild’s achievement is even more special when you know that he had to get three wins in qualifiers to even get a chance to face Medvedev. He also never won a Grand Slam match up to that point.

“It definitely was the happiest day of my life,” said Seyboth Wild after the match. “I knew it was going to be a tough match, but I knew how to play. I have watched him play 1,000 times already. I just had to believe in myself.”

Thiago Seyboth Wild is now set to face No. 485-ranked Guido Pella in the second round of the tournament. The only other time Seyboth Wild reached the second round was at 2021 Wimbledon.

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz defeated fifth-seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-2 to win the 2023 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells; his first win at the tournament. Alcaraz will return to his previous ATP world number-one ranking following the triumph.

“It means a lot to me. To recover the No. 1 [ranking] is crazy for me,” the 19-year-old stated after his win. “But especially to lift the trophy here for me means a lot… I love this tournament. I really enjoy my time here and of course, I felt the love from the people from day one. For me, it’s amazing to complete these 10 days like this.”

Having defeated Medvedev in just an hour and 10 minutes, Alcaraz got through the entire tournament without dropping a set. He also ended the 19-match and three-tournament winning streak of Medvedev, who was last defeated by Sebastian Korda in the Round of 32 of the Australian Open in January.

By winning Indian Wells, Alcaraz becomes the youngest player to win the Sunshine double – both Indian Wells and the Miami Open – as well as becoming only the second teenager ever to win three Masters 1000 events after countryman Rafael Nadal.

Daniil Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open finals to capture his first career Grand Slam. Medvedev got the win in a surprisingly dominant fashion, needing only three sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4) to outlast the world’s No. 1 male tennis player.

Djokovic entered the match with a historic achievement on the line. If he were to win, the 34-year-old Serbian would become the first man since 1969 and Rod Laver to complete calendar Grand Slam, having previously won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. He would also capture record 21st career Grand Slam, breaking a tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

But while Djokovic thrived under pressure many times in his career before, it seems that he broke down under the weight of expectations on Sunday. Uncharacteristic for him, he missed clean shots, made unforced errors, and struggled with Medvedev’s serve even though Russian double-faulted more times than once.

Medvedev’s determination and overall great performance also played a big part in Djokovic’s downfall. The 25-year-old star chased down seemingly lost balls, dominated the baseline, used groundstrokes to perfection, and broke through serving troubles multiple times.

Medvedev also showed mental toughness that allowed him to stick to his game even when it seemed Djokovic was on the verge of a comeback. After racing to a 4-0 lead and then 5-1 lead in the third set, Medvedev saw Djokovic crawling back to 5-4 while denying him a championship point. But he wasn’t about to be denied for the second time, comfortably taking the next game and collapsing to the ground of Arthur Ashe Stadium overwhelmed with excitement.

Daniil Medvedev secured his ticket to the 2021 Australian Open Final match on Friday morning with a dominant win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Medvedev overwhelmed the No. 5-seeded Tsitsipas and needed only three sets (6-4, 6-2, 7-5) to get the job done. He allowed only one break while serving 17 aces and accumulating 46 winners.

Tsitsipas tried to put up a resistance and came close in the third set, but his fatigue after an epic comeback against Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals was evident.

“The moment that I won the match,” said Medvedev afterward, “one of my best shots in my career.”

The win over Tsitsipas now extends Daniil Medvedev’s undefeated streak to 20 matches. He is now headed to his second-career Grand Slam finals and first majors title.

To do this, Medvedev will have to get past Novak Djokovic, who easily handled Aslan Karatsev in the second semifinals matchup. Djokovic has eight Australian Open titles and has never lost a match in the tournament when reaching the semifinals. The No. 1-ranked Serbian is combined 17-0 in the Australian Open semifinals and finals.

In head-to-head matchups, Djokovic currently has a 4-3 lead against Medvedev. However, Medvedev has won three out of their last four meetings, so it should be exciting.
