With a 111-92 win over the Miami Heat, the Dallas Mavericks reached the 50-win mark in 2023-24. This ensured that the Mavs would finish the season as the fifth seed in the Western Conference but also brought a nice payout for their star point guard Kyrie Irving.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Irving had a bonus clause in his contract that required Mavs to pay him $1 million if they reach 50 wins this season and he plays at least 50 games.

Irving signed a 3 year, $120 million contract with the Mavs in the offseason. At the time, he revealed that he asked for several performance-based incentives in order to provide a bit of added motivation for himself.

“I wanted everything that was structured in my contract incentive-wise to be based on production, and that was wins and how many games I’m playing,” Irving said at the time. “…

So I just wanted to make sure that I had some friendly terms, but also some realistic expectations for myself going into the season, looking to just play as many games as possible.”

Irving played in 58 games this season, his most since the 2018-19 campaign. Still, he will miss out on another bonus, which he would be due if he plays 65 games in 2023-24, considering there are only two games left in the regular season.

Kyrie Irving played exceptional basketball for the Mavs this season, averaging 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 41.1% from three-point line.

The Dallas Mavericks got a huge 107-105 win over the reigning NBA champs Denver Nuggets on Sunday night. The Mavs’ point guard Kyrie Irving was the star of the show, sinking an incredible buzzer-beater to end the game.

Most fans at the American Airlines Center already expected overtime when the Mavericks received the ball with 2.8 seconds left on the clock and the score tied at 105-105. Center Max Kleber delivered an inbound pass to Irving, who dribbled to the top of the key and then made a hook shot over the outstretched arm of Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic. The ball went in as the clock reached zero, causing an eruption in the arena.

Irving’s game-winning shot drew praise from around the league, while his teammate Luka Doncic described it as “unbelievable.”

“It’s unbelievable, man. I don’t think people realize how tough of a shot that is — with the off-hand, like even to have a chance… I don’t think people realize how tough that shot is,” said Doncic after the game.

Making the game-winning shot was a cherry on top of Irving’s great game against the Nuggets. He finished with 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. The eight-time All-Star is averaging 25.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists this season.

The Dallas Mavericks’ superstar Luka Doncic saw his impressive triple-double streak end in a 109-99 win over the Golden State Warriors. Doncic was forced to exit the game halfway through the fourth quarter due to a hamstring issue and finished the night with 21 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

Entering the Warriors’ game, Doncic was on a tear that saw him notch a triple-double in seven consecutive games and set a pair of NBA records. He set the record for most consecutive triple-doubles with at least 30 points (six) and most consecutive triple-doubles with 35 points (five).

“He just gave me a signal that his hamstring was tight, so we took him out,” said Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd after the game.

Doncic is currently leading the league with 34.3 points per game while also averaging 9.0 rebounds and 9.8 assists. The Mavs are currently eight in the West and have won their last four games.

While Doncic wasn’t able to keep his streak going, another Mavs player is still keeping his alive. Daniel Gafford continued his streak of consecutive field goals made against the Warriors, going five out of five from the floor. Gafford has now made 33 field goals in the past five games, pulling closer to Wilt Chamberlain’s NBA record of 35.

Before acquiring PJ Washington in a deal with the Charlotte Hornets at the trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks had another plan; they wanted to get Washington Wizards’ Kyle Kuzma. The only problem was that Kuzma didn’t want to go to Dallas.

Speaking with The Athletic earlier this week, Kuzma revealed that the Wizards had an offer from the Mavs for him and that Washington’s president, Michael Winger, was willing to accept it if Kuzma wanted to go. However, the 28-year-old player preferred to stay put, prompting Winger to rebuff Dallas’s interest.

“There was a point in time, Dallas, they definitely did want me,” Kuzma said. “Winger presented me with what the trade was and obviously didn’t want to trade me and kind of left the decision up to me a little bit and asked me what I wanted to do. I told him I wanted to stay and continue to build something. And that was kind of the end of it.”

While Kuzma didn’t get a no-trade clause as part of the four-year, $102 million deal he signed with the Wizards in the summer, the franchise’s brass promised him that he’d have input if a trade opportunity presented itself. That was unless the offer they received was something that the team couldn’t afford to pass on.

Winger obviously felt that the Mavs’ offer wasn’t in the “can’t refuse” realm, prompting him to reach out to Kuzma and leave the decision up to him. And perhaps surprisingly, Kuzma decided he likes it more with the rebuilding Wizards than the contending Mavericks.

Kuzma has been playing arguably his best season since turning pro in 2023-24. He is averaging a career-high 21.8 points and 4.2 assists to go with 6.3 rebounds.

Mark Cuban expressed his satisfaction after selling a controlling stake in the Dallas Mavericks to the families who run the Las Vegas Sands casino company. Despite now being a minority owner, the deal allows Cuban to retain control of the franchise’s basketball operations.

“Nothing’s really changed except my bank account,” Cuban remarked, wrapping up a 3-point shooting session ahead of the Mav’s 110-113 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night. “I feel really good. I think it’s a great partnership. It’s what the team needed on the court and off. I’ll still be overseeing the basketball side of it, but having a partner like Patrick and Sivan and Miriam and their ability to build and to redevelop the arena and whatever comes next beyond that just puts us in a much better position to compete.”

In addition to overseeing basketball operations, Cuban will serve as the franchise’s alternate governor. Still, partner Patrick Dumont will serve as primary governor, meaning that he will have the final say on all operations including within Cuban’s domain. Cuban will retain a 27% stake in the Mavericks following the deal.

The Dallas Mavericks revealed on Saturday that their star guard, Kyrie Irving, is dealing with a right heel contusion. According to the franchise, there is no timetable for Irving’s return.

Irving was hurt in the second quarter of Friday’s 112-125 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. The 31-year-old was fouled while driving to the basket and fell to the ground. At that point, his teammate Dwight Powell was trying to get a loose ball and ended up falling on Irving’s foot.

Irving thanked fans for their support in a post on X (former Twitter) while adding that he is “feeling better than I was yesterday, and for now, that’s all I can ask for. I’ll be fine.”

Kyrie Irving has been dealing with a lingering right foot issue since the start of the 2023-24 NBA season. This caused him to miss four games up to this point. He has already been ruled out for Monday’s clash against the Memphis Grizzlies.

When available, Irving has been playing well. He is currently averaging 23.0 points alongside 3.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.2 steals.

The Mavericks are currently third in the Western Conference with a 13-8 record.

Luka Doncic has been cleared to play in the Dallas Mavericks’ game against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night despite being questionable due to suffering a thumb injury.

Doncic’s left thumb was injured during the first quarter of the Mavs’ 107-88 loss to the LA Clippers on Saturday night when he attempted to steal the ball from the Clippers’ James Harden during the first quarter, striking his thumb against Harden’s knee. Despite his injury, Doncic decided to play on in the game, scoring 30 points in 38 minutes.

At half-time, Doncic underwent X-rays, while an MRI on Monday revealed that he suffered a “low grade” sprain. Doncic’s inclusion in Tuesday night’s game is a welcome sight for the Mavericks, with the player averaging 30.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.8 assists in 16 games this season.

Markieff Morris will return to the Dallas Mavericks after agreeing to a contract with the team, ESPN confirmed late on Saturday. Morris was a part of the deal in February that saw Kyrie Irving arrive in Dallas from the Brooklyn Nets.

Having arrived from the Lakers, Morris’s decision to play for Dallas comes two months after Irving decided to remain with the Mavs on a three-year, $120 million contract. Since his return to Dallas, Morris has been used occasionally, averaging 4.5 points in 8.8 minutes per game in his second tenure with the team.

The power forward’s game time will depend heavily on the roles given to fellow trade acquisitions Grant Williams and Richaun Holmes, as well as those of draft picks Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper. Morris will nonetheless prove to be a wealthy source of experience, having won the 2020 NBA Championship with the Lakers.

Grant Williams, one of the most notable free agents left on the market, reportedly has a new team. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Williams is heading to the Dallas Mavericks via sign-and-trade with the Boston Celtics.

As part of the deal, which also includes the San Antonio Spurs, Williams is getting a five-year, $53 million deal. The Celtics will get two second-rounders while the Spurs land forward Reggie Bullock from Dallas. The agreement will also see the Mavs receiving two second-round selections.

Williams emerged as a valuable contributor for the Celtics in 2022-23 and was expected to assume an even more prominent role last season. However, Boston’s new head coach Joe Mazzulla didn’t seem too eager to expand his role.

The 24-year-old player ended up playing similar minutes in 2022-23 while averaging 8.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, all career highs. Still, his playing time took a dip in the playoffs, where he spent just 17.7 minutes on the floor on average.

Williams underwent surgery on his hand this offseason but is expected to be ready in time for training camp. He might end up being a great acquisition for the Mavs, considering his ability to defend the team’s best players and efficient three-point shooting.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has confirmed that his team will file a protest with the NBA over their 127-125 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. This is due to confusion over who had possession of the ball in a move in the third quarter that led to an uncontested Warriors dunk.

“During the time out the official changed the call and never told us,” Cuban said in a Tweet. “Then when they saw us line up as if it were our ball, he just gave the ball to the warriors. Never said a word to us. They got an easy basketball. Crazy that it would matter in a 2-point game.” He went on to label the incident as the “worst officiating non-call mistake possibly in the history of the NBA.”

Crew chief Sean Wright argued against Cubans’ claim, stating that the refs did in fact signal that the ball was the Warriors. Despite Wright’s claim, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd insisted that this wasn’t the case, claiming that official Michael Smith must have thought that it was the Mavs’ ball judging by his positioning on the court.

According to the NBA Constitution, Cuban must file his claim within 48 hours of the game.
