The Dallas Cowboys have decided to activate the fifth-year option for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, keeping him in Dallas for the 2024 season. The Cowboys made the decision on Thursday, just two weeks before a decision had to be made.

Lamb, the team’s first-round pick in 2020, will earn a salary of $17.99 million in 2024. After being selected for the Pro Bowl, his option salary has become higher than his previous four seasons due to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Last season proved to be a standout season for Lamb, achieving career highs in receptions (107), yards (1,359), and touchdowns (9). This was Lamb’s first season as the Cowboys’ lead receiver following the trade of Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns.

During the first three seasons of his career, Lamb proved himself as a key Cowboys player, attaining the most receptions in the first three years of a career in Cowboys’ history with 260. He also reached 10 100-yard receiving games, trailing only Hall of Famer Bob Hayes (13) for the most in the first three seasons of any Cowboys player’s career.

The Dallas Cowboys have circled back to veteran Cooper Rush as their No. 2 quarterback. Rush will serve as a backup for starter Dak Prescott after winning the job in a competition with Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci.

As a result, Dallas released Gilbert and DiNucci. This helped the team come down to the 53-player roster limit.

Rush joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and manage to lock the backup job midway through his rookie season. He held the spot in 2018 and 2019 as well before being waived during the 2020 offseason.

After a brief stint with the New York Giants, Rush returned to the Cowboys midway through the season but spent most of the campaign on the team’s practice squad.

While Rush only attempted three passes in his pro career, all of which came in his rookie year, the Cowboys consider him a valuable player for their organization. It also helps that he is familiar with the team’s offense and could step in at any moment if called upon.

“I just think he’s shown that he can run the complete offense,” said owner and general manager Jerry Jones while making an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Credit to him. He had some tough competition. Those guys didn’t cut him any slack. He’s had a lot of reps. All of our quarterbacks had because of the absence of Dak. All of those things make us feel real comfortable here.”

Garrett Gilbert was signed by the Cowboys in 2020 and served as a backup for last year’s starter Andy Dalton. He started one game, throwing for 243 yards and one touchdown in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ben DiNucci was the Cowboys’ seventh-round pick in 2020. He played two games as a relief and started one game in his rookie campaign. DiNucci completed 23 passes out of 43 attempted last season while throwing for 219 yards.

The exodus of offseason acquisitions continues at the Dallas Cowboys’ organization. Days after trading pass rusher Everson Griffin, the Cowboys parted ways on Thursday with two more free-agent pickups in defensive tackle Dontari Poe and corner Daryl Worley.

Cowboys were actively trying to trade Poe and Worley for the better part of the week but eventually opted to release them after failing to find takers for the duo.

Dontari Poe joined the Cowboys on a two-year, $8.5 million contract in April. The two-time Pro Bowler was expected to add reliability to the Dallas’ defensive line and was immediately slotted into the starting lineup.

Still, Poe only had seven tackles to show for after seven starts while doing little to nothing in stopping the opposition’s running game. This lack of production prompted the team to move on from him, according to owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas got Daryl Worley also in April, signing the former Carolina Panthers’ man to a one-year, $3 million contract. Just like Poe, Worley also failed to impress during his time with the Cowboys. He only has 14 tackles, and one pass defended in seven games and four starts.

“You make mistakes. You move on,” said Jones. “We’re moving on, but by no means are we giving up.”

Dallas Cowboys’ defensive tackle David Irving will sit out the first four games of the new NFL season for the second consecutive time. After being suspended for four games for violating NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy in 2017, he received the same suspension for 2018 season after violating league’s policy on substance abuse. Cowboys confirmed the news via their social media.

Despite the suspension, David Irving will be able to participate in training camp and is eligible for all four preseason games.

The 24-year-old was present on team’s three-day mandatory minicamp which wrapped up on Thursday but didn’t practice. He also previously missed portions of Cowboys’ offseason program including organized team activities.

If I could’ve come I would’ve, but I couldn’t for certain days so I didn’t,” – Irving explained his absence. “It has nothing to do with me being out of shape. The media or coaches even put it out there. But the real reason is really none of the public’s business right now.

After below average college football career at Iowa State, David Irving entered the 2015 NFL Draft but ended up being undrafted. After a short stint with Kansas City Chiefs, he signed with Dallas Cowboys, serving as the team’s backup defensive tackle. Cowboys gave Irving much more room for playing in 2016 season, and he responded accordingly, finishing the season with 17 tackles, 4.0 sacks, four forced fumbles, five passes deflected and one fumble recovery. In 2017 season, he ended up playing in eight games total, missing first four due to a suspension and final four due to a concussion.

Dallas Cowboys signed offensive guard Zack Martin to a six-year extension which is worth $84 million and includes $40 million guaranteed. If these numbers are close to reality, Martin will become the highest paid guard in NFL. The extension will keep the 27-year-old All-Pro with the franchise through 2024, and he will receive a signing bonus of $20 million. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal was concluded on Wednesday and should be confirmed in the upcoming days.

Dallas Cowboys and Zack Martin tried to negotiate a long-term deal in the summer of 2017 but failed to reach an agreement. The contract negotiations were put on hold once the season began, and resumed in this offseason. According to sources close to the situation, Cowboys and Martin were close to making a deal back in early May, but couldn’t come to terms about final details. These issues were ironed out in the past couple of days, which led to Martin attending Cowboys minicamp after he previously missed organized team activities.

Dallas Cowboys selected Zack Martin with the 16th overall pick in 2014 NFL Draft, although it was speculated that the organization could take Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. Time has shown that Cowboys made a wise decision since Martin played all 64 games since entering the league while Manziel played 15 games, last being in 2015.

During his time in the league, Zack Martin earned four Pro Bowl appearance, two First-team All-Pro, and two Second-team All-Pro selections.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has set some big goals for the future. The 24-year-old QB spoke with the reporters at the Cowboys’ Reliant Home Run Derby and declared that he wants to be the best QB in the history of the franchise.

I want to be the best I can,” – said Prescott. “I want to be the best quarterback that the Cowboys ever had. So when I go in each and every day, it’s just about being the best player I can be. All that stuff comes when you play the game well.

Prescott is facing a tough task since two he will be chasing some of the all-time greats. Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman are both Hall of Famers and won five Super Bowls combined. And then there is Danny White, who led the Cowboys to NFC Championship Games three seasons and Tony Romo, who is currently franchise leader in passing yards and touchdown passes.

Dallas Cowboys selected Dak Prescott in the fourth round of 2016 NFL draft, with the intention to develop him under the mentorship of their starting QB, Tony Romo. After backup Kellen Moore and Romo both suffered injuries before the season start, Cowboys were forced to make Prescott their starting quarterback. The rookie responded in the best way possible, leading the team to 13-3 record and NFC East title. Prescott was named AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year for 2016.

In the 2017 season, Cowboys missed the playoffs despite the 9-7 record, but Dak Prescott had another strong showing with 3,324 passing yards and 22 passing touchdowns alongside 357 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten decided it was time to end his football career. The 35-year-old announced his retirement on Thursday and is set to join ESPN’s Monday Night Football as an analyst. Witten will leave the Cowboys as the player who played most games in the franchise’s history.

I never wanted this day to come.” – said Witten at a press conference announcing his retirement. “But it does come for all of us. My mindset has always been that they would probably have to drag me off the field. And I was OK with that.

Witten considered joining the Monday Night Football for some time now and reportedly had an option to play out the 2018 and join the MNF’s team in 2019. Still, the offer was too good, and he decided to take the opportunity right away.

If you can’t play it, you want to coach it. And if you can’t coach it, you want to be around it,” – Witten explained his decision to join MNF. “I think it’s a unique opportunity to join a good team and to be able to partner with guys that have that same passion and a huge platform to share our love for the game and the National Football League.

Cowboys drafted Jason Witten in the third round of 2003 NFL Draft and played in 15 games in his rookie season while earning NFL All-Rookie Team honors. He went on to establish himself as one of the league’s most reliable players, playing in all games of the regular season from 2004 to 2017. Witten earned 11 Pro Bowl selections during his career alongside two First-team All-Pro and two Second-team All-Pro honors.

Dallas Cowboys keep on adding wide receivers after they moved on from Dez Bryant earlier this month. The team’s latest acquisition is WR Tavon Austin, who joins from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a sixth-round pick (No. 162).

This trade comes as a surprise since Austin just recently reconstructed four-year, $42 million extension he signed in 2016. According to the new deal, the 28-year-old will get $5 million guaranteed and $3 million in incentives.

I definitely didn’t see this coming at all, but it’s the business side of football and the NFL,” – said Austin after the trade was announced. “I’m definitely appreciative of my opportunities that I have and I’m just glad it’s the Dallas Cowboys.

Tavon Austin was drafted with the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft by the Rams but never managed to truly reach his potential. In 2017 NFL season, Austin had only 13 catches for 47 yards, although he partially made up for it in the running game, having 59 carries for 270 yards and a touchdown.

One of the issues for him has been his size and how you use him in the NFL and we probably see him as a guy who can be versatile for us,” – said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. “Stephen [Jones, Cowboys’ VP] referenced a web back, a dynamic, mismatch running back out of the backfield, but obviously he played the slot, he’s a returner. So what you try to do is you try to get the ball in his hands a number of different ways. … We felt like he could add some explosiveness to our offense.

Although there have been lots of rumors that Dallas Cowboys could move on from wide receiver Dez Bryant, no one actually thought this will happen. Well, it happened. The Cowboys have announced on Friday that they have release Bryant after the player had a meeting with the team’s owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Jerry Jones issued a statement shortly after the news was confirmed:

As an organization, we hold Dez Bryant in the highest regard, and we are grateful for his passion, spirit and contributions to this team for the past eight years. He will always be a valued member of our family.

Dez and I share a personal and professional relationship that is very strong, and he is one of just a handful of players with whom I have become that close to over the past 30 years.

This was not an easy decision. It was made based upon doing what we believe is in the best interest of the Dallas Cowboys.

We arrived at this crossroad collectively with input from several voices within the organization. Ultimately we determined it was time to go in a new direction.

ESPN reports that Cowboys didn’t discuss a possible pay-cut before releasing Dez Bryant, a move that will save them $8 million against the cap in 2018. The 29-year-old, who was the first round pick in 2010 NFL draft, signed a five-year, $70 million contract in 2015 but didn’t produce accordingly. He never came close to 90 catches, 1,200 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns; numbers he averaged from 2012 through 2014. During his seven years in the NFL, Dez Bryant had three Pro Bowl appearances, received First-team All-Pro once and was NFL receiving touchdowns leader in 2014 with 16.

According to the Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, defensive end Randy Gregory is preparing to apply for reinstatement to the NFL. Gregory was suspended by the league for at least one year in January 2017 after he failed on multiple drug tests and skipped few of them. The 25-year-old will make his case to NFL, with Jerry Jones being hopeful about Gregory’s return to the field in 2018 season.

I’m not confident but I do see where his heart is,” – said Jones. “He’s one of the smartest people that have played this game. By documentation he is. So he’s smart. That’s a tremendous step. Of course, he’s had that same IQ since he’s had these issues. That’s the issues. This is definitely a medical issue. There’s no doubt in my mind (it’s) medical. That’s another campaign right there.

Randy Gregory played college football at Nebraska and made First-team All-Big Ten two consecutive years before declaring for 2015 NFL Draft. Although projected as a high first-round pick upon entering the draft, his stocks were severely hurt by the fact that he failed a drug test on marijuana at NFL Scouting Combine. He was selected late in the second round when Dallas Cowboys took him with the 60th overall pick.

After a disappointing 2015 season, in which he missed four games and failed to find his true form, Gregory was suspended for four games in 2016 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He then failed another test and was handed an additional 10 games suspension while being removed from the team’s roster. He made his return in Week 16 of 2016 season and recorded his first NFL sack in Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles. After he missed a scheduled drug test, NFL suspended him for 2016 playoffs and at least for one season.
