The Dallas Cowboys have just entered the tier of NFL teams that have long-term security at the quarterback position. The organization finally managed to agree to a new contract with Dak Prescott, officially announcing the news on Monday via social media.

The Cowboys didn’t disclose details about the agreement, but the NFL Network reported that Prescott inked a four-year deal worth $160 million. The contract comes with $126 million guaranteed and $66 million worth of a signing bonus. This is the largest signing bonus received by a player in NFL history.

The new deal for Dak Prescott was almost three years in the making and well-publicized. The negotiations took wrong turns at various stages, with the two sides being unable to come to terms about the contract length and guaranteed money. Reportedly, Dallas was insisting on a five-year agreement while Prescott’s representatives wanted a four-year contract.

After being unable to come to terms ahead of the 2020 NFL season, the Cowboys placed a $31.4 million franchise tag on Prescott. The 27-year-old signal-caller responded with an impressive five-game stretch, in which he threw for 1,856 yards and nine touchdowns before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

Despite all the obstacles, Dallas and Prescott wanted to remain together, which ended up pushing the deal through. This will now allow both parties to operate without pressure in the 2021 NFL season and work together towards bringing the Cowboys back to Super Bowl.

Prescott, a fourth-round pick in 2016, has been the Cowboys’ starting quarterback for the past five years. He led the team to a 42–27 record during that period, and his stint under center resulted in two playoff appearances for the team.

It’s no secret that the Dallas Cowboys got quite a bargain on the quarterback position in recent years as starter Dak Prescott played on a cheap rookie deal. According to Hall of Famer and former Cowboys’ wide receiver Michael Irvin, this is the reason the team shouldn’t now be hesitant to sign Prescott on a massive extension.

The Cowboys and Prescott have been negotiating an extension for more than a year now but haven’t been able to close a deal, which caused Dallas to franchise tag the 26-year-old. Reportedly, there is a disconnect between the two sides in both value of the deal and the length.

During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Irvin was asked to comment on the situation, and Cowboys’ legend expressed optimism about the outcome.

“Dak has done everything and he has won,” said Irvin. “He has won a lot of football games in his first four years. So to say he doesn’t deserve the money isn’t totally correct. He does deserve the money. That’s the market, and he’s a starting, winning quarterback in the NFL. It’s just a matter of getting it done. And I think they’ll get it done.”

According to several reports, Dallas has been offering a yearly salary of around $35 million, while the player wants to break the record and is pushing somewhere close to $40 million. Irvin believes that Cowboys should accept his terms as they “stole four years” of Prescott while he was on a rookie deal.

“The kind of investment you want to make, the kind of guy you say, ‘Yeah, we hit it with this guy. We got him in the fourth round.’ You stole four years, so whatever he gets he deserves because you still owe him back pay,” he added.

Dak Prescott was ever-present for Dallas Cowboys since entering the league, starting all 64 games and posting 40-24 record. He also led the Cowboys to two playoff appearances and has a playoff win on his resume.

Still, due to the fact that he was a fourth-round pick, Prescott only earned $2.7 million over the course of his career. This is why he has every right to ask for a big payday, and why he’ll probably get it despite Dallas’ attempts to get a discount.

Dallas Cowboys made another attempt to resume contract negotiations with their quarterback Dak Prescott. According to ESPN, Cowboys made a new offer to Prescott in an attempt to get the deal done before the franchise tag deadline on Thursday.

Cowboys and Prescott have been engaged in negotiations for more than a year, and the attempts to get an agreement haven’t proved fruitful until now. Dallas is reportedly pushing for a team-friendly deal while the player is looking to reset the QB market. The two sides haven’t been talking since September and only resumed negotiations at the scouting combine in Indianapolis in late February.

ESPN’s Todd Archer reports that Dallas’ offer is worth more than $100 million, with Prescott set to receive $33 million a year if he accepts the deal. This wasn’t enough for the 26-year-old to ink the contract, however, and he is ready to wait for a better proposal.

In case the deal doesn’t get done soon, Dallas Cowboys will probably use a franchise tag on Dak Prescott. If Cowboys opt for an exclusive tag, Prescott will earn $33 million in 2020 while being ineligible to talk with other teams. In case of a common franchise tag, Prescott would earn $27 million, but would be able to negotiate a contract with another franchise and see whether Dallas would match it.

Prescott had a career year in 2019, completing 65.1 percent of his passes for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns. This, however, didn’t lead to wins as Cowboys finished the season with 8-8 record and missed the playoffs.

Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott spent the majority of the past year negotiating an extension, but didn’t manage to strike a deal until now. And, as recent reports suggest, they are still a long way from finding an agreement.

According to NFL Network and ESPN, the most likely outcome of this situation will be Cowboys placing a franchise tag on Prescott. However, they added that neither side would be happy with this solution.

Reportedly, Dallas would like to resolve the situation quickly and will continue to insist on a long-term deal in the next weeks. Prescott, after playing on a $2 million contract last season, would also like the long-term security, but isn’t willing to budge from his terms in order to get it right away.

The biggest issue in the talks is the determination of Prescott’s value. Reports say that Dallas is willing to make Prescott among the most paid QBs in the league, but that isn’t enough for the player. The 26-year-old two-times Pro Bowler instead wants to reset the QB market and become the highest-paid player on the position.

Prescott rejected the contract offer last offseason and instead decided to bet on himself in 2019. Although he had career year statistically, throwing for 4,902 and 30 touchdowns, this didn’t translate into wins. Cowboys missed the playoffs, finishing with 8-8, which is something that the front office is probably using it as leverage in the negotiations.

Despite starting every game for the Dallas Cowboys in the last three years, quarterback Dak Prescott was one of the least paid QBs in the league last season, earning $630,000 in 2018. He is looking to change that soon and is currently negotiating a new contract extension with the Cowboys although two sides are yet not close to the deal. Still, the fans shouldn’t be worried about the negotiations too much, as it seems like Prescott is determined to play out his career in Dallas.

“I want to be a Cowboy forever,” – said Prescott in a recent interview published on the Cowboys’ official website. “I think the people that are doing the deal feel the same way so to me it’s no rush. I know it will get done.”

According to Prescott, he isn’t too worried about the contract extension and rather focuses on becoming a better football player.

“My whole focus is within the locker room,” – he added. “I’ve got people that take care of that. I’ve got a great team, team of agents. That’s their job. Jerry has said when he’s had to that they are negotiating but as far as I’m concerned, it’s just about getting better, getting better as quarterback, getting better as a leader and just making sure our team is getting better.”

Dak Prescott was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and initially supposed to be a backup for veteran Tony Romo. After Romo got injured in the preseason, Prescott assumed the role of a starter in at the beginning of his rookie season and hasn’t looked back since. He is currently the QB with most wins (33) since 2016 after New England Patriots’ Tom Brady.

During his three years in the NFL, Prescott completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 10,876 yards and 67 touchdowns in the regular season. He also rushed for 944 yards and 18 touchdowns.
