Cleveland Indians are looking to trim down their salary bill in the offseason, and have reportedly noticed other MLB teams that they are willing to listen to offers for several of their accomplished veteran players.

According to ESPN‘s Buster Onley, Indians will keep the third baseman Jose Ramirez and shortstop Francisco Lindor, but are willing to part ways with 2017 Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber, 2017 AL wins leader Carlos Carrasco, All-Star catcher Yan Gomes, and three-time All-Star slugger Edwin Encarnación and several other players for the right price.

Corey Kluber is set to make $17 million in 2019, while the Cleveland Indians hold team options on his contract for 2020 and 2021. He should be one of the easiest players to move, given the fact that he is playing on a high level on a team-friendly contract. Kluber was 20-7 in 2018 and had 222 strikeouts and 2.89 ERA.

Moving Edwin Encarnacion, however, will be more demanding task considering the big contract that is set to pay him $21.67 million in 2019. Encarnacion had 32 home runs and .246 batting average in 2018.

The Cleveland Indians had concerns with their payroll for a while now, and they feel they need to act before it gets too big. Big payroll is especially becoming a pressing issue for the team since they are among the worst teams in MLB when it comes to attendance. Because of salary management, the team didn’t tender qualifying offers to Michael Brantley, Andrew Miller and Cody Allen.

Records are meant to be broken, and Major League Baseball has taken this seriously in 2017 season. After Cleveland Indians set a new winning streak record of American League and came close to 1916 New York Giants with their 22 straight wins, the MLB’s single-season home run record was also broken. In the game against Toronto Blue Jays, Alex Gordon of the Kansas City Royals hit a home run which was 5,694th this season and marked a new record. The previous record was 5,693 home runs in 2000 season. In case you are wondering, Alex Presley of the Detroit Tigers was the man to tie the record. Now, with 12 days left in the 2017 season, the number will just keep on rising. MLB confirmed this on their official Twitter account with an accompanying video of the home run.

Current home run per game rate is 2.52 or 1.26 per team, which could mean we are in for more than 6,100 home runs in this season. For comparison, 2000 season saw 2.34 per game (1.17 per team) rate. The rate of home runs has spiked up since 2014’s 4,186 home runs, increasing around 47 percent. 107 players already hit 20 or more home runs this season, which is 3 less than in 2016. Some may argue that the reason for this record-breaking season are changes in the game itself but baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred denies that. Speaking for NBC Sports, Manfred offered the following comment:

I don’t think that we are ever going to have a single explanation for exactly why we’ve see so many. But players are bigger and stronger. They’re playing a little differently, in terms of the way they swing. Pitchers throw harder. The one thing I remain comfortable with: Nothing about the baseball, according to our testing, is materially different.”

We will have to believe commissioner Manfred and just enjoy in this record – shattering season.

Cleveland Indians‘ hopes for breaking the New York Giants‘ record for longest winning streak in MLB history is well and alive. After their 21st straight win set the American League record for most consecutive wins on Wednesday, Indians have beaten Kansas City Royals on Thursday. This means that with 22 consecutive wins, Indians are sole owners of the second longest streak in MLB history. Before the game, they were tied with Chicago White Stockings from 1880 and Chicago Cubs from 1935.

Still, Royals didn’t give up without a fight. Indians were close to losing the game since they trailed 2-1 in the 9th inning. Then, Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, and Jay Bruce stepped up and kept the streak alive. During this streak, Indians mostly dominated their opponent, which makes their latest win even more remarkable. Prior to the Thursday’s game against the Royals, Indians trailed in 4 innings out of 189, outscoring their opponents 139 to 35.
Now, Indians probably have one goal in their mind, and that is to keep the streak going and reach the 26 consecutive wins, which was only achieved by 1916 New York Giants so far.

There are some who claim that the Giants’ feat is flawed, and they may have a somewhat valid argument. New York Giants had 12 straight wins before meeting up with Pittsburgh Pirates. The game against the Pirates was ruled as a tie and was never played again like it should have. After that game, the Giants had 14 more consecutive wins. For Steve Hirdt, Major League Baseball’s official record keeper, there is no doubt that the 26 games winning streak by the New York Giants is valid. “It’s the longest winning streak, it’s the record for most consecutive wins, etc., because a tie game breaks neither a winning streak or losing streak for a team because it always gets replayed unless the season ends first.” – noted Hirdt.

Indians are now 4 games away from tying the record, and they will have a chance to make it 3 games on Friday when they’ll face Kansas City Royals once more.

With their 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday becoming 21st straight, Cleveland Indians have set the American League record for the most consecutive wins with. The longest winning streak in AL was previously held by Oakland Athletics, which had 20 straight wins in 2002. The record was confirmed on the MLB’s official Twitter profile.

MLB Stat of the day revealed some impressive numbers Indians achieved during their 21 wins run. In 189 innings, Cleveland Indians have trailed in just 4. Team’s starting pitchers are 19-0 with 1.70 ERA. Indians have outscored opponents 139 to 35. Finally, Indians had 41 home runs while allowing only 35 runs.

With their 21 winning streak, Cleveland Indians are now tied with Chicago White Stockings from 1880 and Chicago Cubs from 1935 for the second most consecutive wins in MLB history. The 1916 New York Giants are currently credited with the MLB’s longest winning streak, having won 26 consecutive games. Bleacher Report notes that 13th game of Giants’ 26 games winning streak was ruled as a tie because of darkness. Giants played against Pittsburgh Pirates, and the game was never finished.

Now, if Giants had 12 straight wins, 1 tie, and then had 14 more wins, why are they still credited with the streak? Well, there is an explanation provided by Steve Hirdt, executive vice president at the Elias Sports Bureau, Major League Baseball’s official record keeper.

A tie was never an acceptable result of a baseball game. The Giants’ 26-game winning streak has existed since the beginning of time. It’s the longest winning streak, it’s the record for most consecutive wins, etc., because a tie game breaks neither a winning streak or losing streak for a team because it always gets replayed unless the season ends first.

The last time when Indians lost was on August 23, against Boston Red Sox. They will look to continue their streak on Thursday against Kansas City Royals.
