It looks like Cleveland Browns have wrapped up their head coaching search. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Browns will hire Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski for the job.

Browns were the last remaining NFL team without a head coach and have interviewed a number of candidates in recent weeks, including New England Patriots’ OC Josh McDaniels and San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. Stefanski emerged as an early favorite, and despite tough competition, ended up getting the job.

Stefanski was one of the candidates for Browns’ head coaching job last year, but the team decided for in-house hire, choosing interim OC Freddie Kitchens instead. Kitchens, however, struggled in his first season at the helm and finished the year with a 6-10 record. Cleveland fired him shortly after the end of the regular season.

Kevin Stefanski spent almost his entire career with the Vikings, serving at various positions, including tight ends coach and quarterbacks coach. He took over the as Minnesota’s interim offensive coordinator job in 2018 before getting the job on a permanent basis in 2019.

Vikings were great under Stefanski this season, being eighth in the league in total points and sixth in rushing. The team, however, struggled in Divisional Round game against 49ers, when they had just 147 total yards of offense and scored 10 points.

Cleveland Browns’ general manager John Dorsey won’t overlook Gregg Williams when he begins talking with potential candidates for the team’s head coach position. Dorsey told reporters on Wednesday that Williams, who is currently serving as Brown’s interim coach, will be interviewed for the permanent position.

“Gregg [Williams] will get interviewed for the head coaching position. I think he deserves that.” – said Dorsey before adding that he thinks Williams “has done a really nice job.”

Gregg Williams served as a defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns under Hue Jackson, but received a shot to be on the helm when Jackson was fired last month. Under Williams, Browns suffered 21-37 defeat against Kansas City Chiefs and managed to get a 28-16 win over Atlanta Falcons.

Williams already had the opportunity to lead his own team in the NFL, being the head coach for Buffalo Bills from 2001 to 2003. His time in Buffalo, however, wasn’t overly successful since he never managed to have a winning season and ended his stint with 17-31 record.

We will have to wait for the offseason to see whether Gregg Williams is able to turn his interim status into permanent position since that is when John Dorsey will start searching for a new coach. According to Dorsey, the search won’t be public and he already has a list of names he would like to get to Cleveland.

“Me personally, I would like to see a man of character. I would like to see a man who can lead young men. I would like to see a man who has got high football acumen. Those are the three basic things there that I look for,” – said Dorsey about the qualities the next Brown’s coach should possess.

Cleveland Browns announced on Monday that they had fired head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley. The move comes after 18-33 loss to Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, which put Browns on a three-game losing streak and a 2-5-1 record.

Browns also announced that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams would serve as interim head coach while running backs coach Freddie Kitchens will take over as offensive coordinator.

We greatly appreciate Hue’s commitment to the Cleveland Browns organization over the last two and a half years,” – said Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam in a statement. “We understand how critical this time period is in the development of our football team, individually and collectively, and believed it was in the organization’s best interest to make the move at this time, in order to maximize our opportunities the rest of this season. We certainly only wish Hue, Michelle, and his family the best moving forward.

There were several reasons for why Cleveland Browns decided to fire Hue Jackson. The most obvious one is the fact that Jackson had 3-36-1 record during his time with the organization, and that he never managed to win a road game. The second one was that the relationship between him and Todd Haley was so bad that the two couldn’t co-exist anymore. Also, Browns reportedly thought that the best way to develop their rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield was through personnel changes.

According to sources around the league, the Browns are looking at several names that could take over the head coaching position, including University of Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley. Most football analysts also think that Riley is the best solution, considering his familiarity with Mayfield, whom he had coached in college.
