After more than three months of tough competition and lots of drama and controversy, the final four teams that are left standing to compete for this year’s college football championship have been selected.

The top four teams in the rankings, LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, and Oklahoma, will now head into a semi-final competition to decide who will play for the national championship in January.

LSU was awarded the top seed and will face #4 Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl semifinal game in Atlanta. The Tigers ended up with the top ranking after a 37-10 demolishing of #5 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, whereas Oklahoma squeaked in after an overtime winner in the Big 12 Championship Game over Baylor.

On the other hand, #2 Ohio State and #3 Clemson, both of which are undefeated, will square off in the other semi-final at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

Ohio State, who has looked dominant throughout the season and dispatched of Penn State in Saturday’s Big Ten Championship Game, will look to send the reigning national champions home in what should be a thrilling matchup.

The Peach Bowl and Fiesta Bowl semi-final games will take place on Saturday, December 28th.

Only one week of games remain until the College Football Playoff selection committee will be called on to choose the four teams that will qualify for the competition.

Only this weekend’s conference championship games stand between the selection committee picking its four qualifiers for the big tournament at the end of the season which will decide this year’s college football champion.

Here are our predictions for the teams that will qualify to play for all the marbles.

#1 LSU Tigers vs. #4 Utah Utes

LSU qualifying for the College Football Playoff, even if they were to unexpectedly lose to Georgia in this Saturday’s SEC Championship Game, is pretty much a given at this point. As one of three undefeated teams in the country, if they are able to knock off a top-five Georgia team in Atlanta this weekend, we think they’ll deservedly be named the top team.

As for the #4 seed and the last team into the playoffs, there are four real possibilities at this point: Georgia, Utah, Oklahoma, and Baylor. We don’t think Georgia will make it because of their likely loss to LSU, and one of Oklahoma or Baylor will be eliminated with a loss in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Personally, we think Utah will go on to knock off Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game, giving them a signature win against a top 15 team that should be enough to qualify them. Their road loss at USC, a top 25 team, is nothing to be ashamed of, whereas Oklahoma’s loss at Kansas State is a little less impressive.

#2 Ohio State Buckeyes vs. #3 Clemson Tigers

If Ohio State beats Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship Game this weekend, they are a lock to make the playoffs. The Buckeyes have looked like one of the two best teams in the country this year, and they will look to play for their first championship since the 2015 CFP Championship Game this season. They have won all of their games this season by double digits so far this season, looking dominant in the process.

Clemson has a date with 23rd-ranked Virginia in the ACC Championship Game this weekend, a game which they should win handily. The 2019 College Football Playoff Champions have looked dominant for the majority of the season, with a close win over North Carolina being the only blip on their radar. If the Tigers and Buckeyes meet up in the semifinals, it could end up being a game for the ages.

After winning 2 National Championships in the past two seasons with the Clemson Tigers, head coach Dabo Swinney has been rewarded with the biggest deal for a head coach in the history of college football.

Swinney and Clemson agreed to a 10-year, $93 million dollar deal that will keep Swinney under contract with the Tigers until 2028.

Clemson won the CFB Playoff and the National Championship last season and also in 2016.

Under Swinney, the team has qualified for the College Football Playoff in all of the past four seasons.

Swinney took over as the Tigers’ head coach in 2008 when he was appointed as Tommy Bowden’s interim replacement.

He quickly won out as the school’s long-term choice at the helm of the football program and has compiled a 116-30 overall record as the team’s coach.

In addition to his team’s two National Championships, Swinney’s Tigers have won 5 ACC championships in his 11 seasons as the school’s head coach.

If Swinney leaves Clemson for another school during the length of his contract, he would have to pay a $6 million buyout. However, if he jumps at an opportunity to coach in the NFL, he could leave freely.

In any case, Clemson and Swinney have been entered a long-term agreement that should keep the school’s best-ever head coach there for the next decade.
