Chicago Fire is on the verge of adding a significant piece to its squad ahead of the 2024 MLS season. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Fire is finalizing a deal with U.S. international midfielder Kellyn Acosta.

Acosta is a free agent after his contract with LAFC expired at the end of the 2023 campaign. The 28-year-old player reportedly received interest from several other MLS teams as well as teams for Europe but decided to continue his career in Chicago.

Bogert reports that Fire made Acosta the focal point of their offseason efforts, intending to make him the “centerpiece” of their overhauled roster. The club previously also added highly-rated Belgian forward Hugo Cuypers as they look to return to MLS Cup playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Kellyn Acosta spent his entire career in MLS, suiting up for FC Dallas, Colorado Rapids, and LAFC. The Plano, Texas native played a total of 252 games in MLS throughout his career, scoring 18 goals and dishing 25 assists. He has a U.S. Open Cup trophy with Dallas from 2016 while also winning MLS Cup with LAFC in 2022.

Acosta is also a member of the United States men’s national team. He received his senior team debut in 2016 and went on to make 58 appearances for the national side.

The Chicago Fire has seen enough from their interim head coach, Frank Klopas, to give him the job on a permanent basis. The Fire announced the news on Tuesday.

Klopas took over back in May following the departure of Ezra Hendrickson. In 24 games in charge, the former U.S. international compiled a record of 8-5-11, recording 29 points. Chicago finished 13th in the Eastern Conference standings.

According to Fire’s sporting director Georg Heitz, the club conducted an extensive search for their new head coach but circled back to Klopas, seeing him as the best choice.

“Frank is hard working, has strong relationships with our players and staff, and knows what it takes to be successful in this League,” said Heitz. “During the interview process Frank laid out a clear plan to create a winning culture and mentality within the Club, and we are all aligned on the areas that we need to strengthen to be much more competitive in 2024.”

Frank Klopas finished his playing career with the Chicago Fire in 1999 and remained at the club as strength and conditioning trainer. Later, Klopas managed the indoor soccer team Chicago Storm before rejoining Fire as a technical director in 2008.

In 2011, Klopas was named Fire’s interim head coach and went on to coach the club through the 2013 campaign before stepping down. He also served as a head coach for Montreal Impact and had another interim stint with Fire in 2021.

The Chicago Fire have found their next head coach. According to multiple reports, the MLS side is set on giving the job to Columbus Crew assistant Ezra Hendrickson.

Reportedly, the two sides have an agreement in principle with only finer details and paperwork standing in between Hendrickson’s appointment.

The Chicago Fire have been searching for their next head coach after firing Raphael Wicky in September following a series of disappointing results. Frank Klopas, who served as an assistant under Wicky, took over on an interim basis and finished the season at number 12 in the Eastern Conference.

Several names have been linked with Fire’s vacancy, with the team reportedly wanting someone familiar with the league. Other candidates included USMNT legend Landon Donovan and LAFC assistant coach Ante Razov.

Ezra Hendrickson has longtime experience in Major League Soccer, having been part of the league for more than two decades. As a player, he spent more than a decade playing in the MLS for teams like the Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United.

After retiring from professional soccer in 2008, he turned to coaching and took on the assistant role with the Seattle Sounders FC. He spent 10 years with the franchise before embarking on stints with the Galaxy and the Crew.

Chicago Fire recently made a bold attempt to bring a Premier League star to MLS, entering negotiations with Manchester United’s midfielder Nemanja Matic. However, according to several reports, Fire failed in their bid and is forced to turn to other targets to fill the club’s remaining designated player spot.

With Matic set to become a free agent in the summer and struggling to get playing time in Man Utd, Fire decided to use the opportunity and try to lure the 31-year-old Serbian to the United States. The two sides kicked off negotiations early this week, but they quickly realized that making an agreement would be impossible.

Reportedly, Fire was hoping to make Matic their new DP and offered him a contract with a yearly salary of around $6.5 million. The player and his agent, however, returned with a counteroffer that was way beyond what Chicago could give him and effectively killed the deal.

Nemanja Matic was one of the key players in Manchester United’s midfield in recent years but dropped out of rotation almost completely this season. With manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deciding to put faith in his younger players, Matic was limited to only nine appearances in all competitions.

Due to his status on the team, Matic is pushing for an exit and hopes to make a transfer before the January transfer window ends. On the other hand, Man Utd is hoping to recoup some of the money they invested in him and might trigger their club option in order to prevent the player from leaving for free.

Chicago Fire announced on Friday that they have named Raphael Wicky as their new manager. Wicky, who is best known for his stint with Swiss powerhouse FC Basel, will succeed Veljko Paunovic who was fired at the end of 2019 MLS season.

Wicky is familiar with U.S. soccer, as he finished his professional career in MLS with Chivas USA in 2008. The 42-year-old also spent the previous year coaching United States U-17, helping the team qualify for FIFA U17 World Cup.

“Raphael, who is familiar with Chicago, has always wanted to coach in MLS,” said Fire’s general manager Georg Heitz in a statement. “Since he arrived in the U.S. and played here, he has become a student, learning about and studying MLS and what it takes to be successful in this League. We’re thrilled that he will be our new head coach.”

Raphael Wicky started his coaching career at the helm of FC Thun and Servette’s youth teams, before joining FC Basel in the same role in 2013. Wicky worked his way up and was named the manager of the first team in 2017.

Basel finished second in Swiss league in Wicky’s first season, which marked the end of their title-winning streak after eight trophies. The team, however, performed well in UEFA Champions League, reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in club history.

“I am honored and proud to be named the head coach of Chicago Fire FC,” said Wicky. “Chicago is a world-class sports city and this club has a bright future, both on and off the field. I can’t wait to get started.”

Although it seemed like German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is close to signing a contract extension with Chicago Fire, that won’t be the case. Instead, Schweinsteiger decided to retire from soccer and put an end to an illustrious and successful career at the age of 35.

Schweinsteiger announced his decision via a letter posted on social media in which he thanked his fans, the clubs he played for, and his family for the support.

“Saying goodbye as an active player makes me feel a little nostalgic, but I am also looking forward to the exciting challenges that await me soon,” – said Schweinsteiger in the letter. “I will remain faithful to football. Many, many thanks for the time we spent together, I will always have a place for you in my heart.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger spent the majority of his career with German powerhouse Bayern Munich, with whom he played for 13 seasons and won 18 trophies including eight Bundesliga titles and one Champions League. Schweinsteiger left Bayern in 2015 to join Premier League giants Manchester United, but played only two seasons in England before coming to MLS.

Chicago Fire general manager Nelson Rodrίguez recently said that the club is working on adding players to their roster, and on Monday, he delivered. Fire announced that they have signed former United States international defender Jonathan Bornstein.

Bornstein, who made 38 appearances with USMNT, joins Fire after spending the previous two years with Israeli League side Maccabi Netanya.

To get Bornstein, Chicago had to pay $50,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) to Columbus Crew in order to move to the top of MLS waiver order.

“We began pursuing Jonathan back in January but, unfortunately, his insertion into the lineup made him too invaluable to his former club,” – said Rodrίguez in a statement.”In addition to providing a steady presence and competition on the field, we believe Jonathan will be an excellent mentor for our younger players.”

Jonathan Bornstein started his career in MLS, having played with Chivas USA between 2006 and 2010. After a string of good performances in MLS, which included winning MLS Rookie of the Year and being selected in MLS Best XI, Bornstein caught the attention of Liga MX clubs and eventually signed with Tigres UANL. He also had stints with Atlante and Querétaro.

“Excited to be part of the Chicago Fire Family and returning to the MLS after almost a decade,” – said Bornstein. “My family and I are very grateful for the opportunity. Go Fire.”

Chicago Fire has made a blockbuster move on Thursday, acquiring Argentina international winger Nicolas Gaitan from Chinese club Dalian Yifang. According to MLS Soccer’s Sam Stejskal, Fire will close the deal for Gaitan using Discretionary Targeted Allocation Money.

The deal was confirmed by Dalian Yifang, who issued a statement in which they thanked Gaitan for his contributions to the team.

“From the perspective of the overall planning of the club and its long-term development, after agreeing with the player, Nicolas Gaitan joins Chicago Fire,” – said the club in a statement. “The club would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to Gaitan for his contribution to the team — and wish him all the best in the future.”

Nicolas Gaitan joined Dalian exactly one year ago, and went on to play 29 games for the team, contributing with two goals and seven assists. Despite providing some great performances during his time in China, Dalian decided to release the 31-year-old after they reached a limit of having four foreign players on the roster.

Gaitan spent his early career with Boca Juniors, before coming to Europe and signing with Portugal giants Benfica in 2010. After establishing himself as one of the team’s key players, he made a move to La Liga’s Atletico Madrid in 2016, but failed to replicate the same in Spain.

The Chicago Fire are sticking with Serbian manager Veljko Paunovic for the future, deciding to re-sign the 41-year-old to a two-year deal. Paunovic’s new contract also contains a club option for the third year.

Paunovic’s coaching staff, which includes assistant coaches Marko Mitrovic and Eric Gehrig, will also remain with the club.

“We believe the foundation we are setting and the standards we are demanding are the right ones in developing our championship program,” – said Chicago Fire president Nelson Rodriguez in a statement. “Continuity is a critical element in that process and retaining [Paunovic] for the next few years as a leader in that effort was an important offseason objective.”

Veljko Paunovic, who spent his early coaching career managing Serbia’s youth teams and managed to win FIFA U20 World Cup title, joined the Fire in 2015. After two below average seasons, he led the team to a playoff appearance in 2017, their first since 2012. He couldn’t repeat the same success in 2018, however, with Chicago finishing the season 10th in Eastern Conference.

“I feel excited about this project as I was the very first day three years ago when I became a part of the Chicago Fire Football family,” – said Paunovic after signing a new deal. “I’m also very grateful for this new opportunity with the club and the values that I’m fully aligned and committed to representing in every city and field around the globe and US.”

German soccer superstar midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has turned around the Chicago Fire after signing a one-year deal in March 2017. He contributed three goals and six assists in 24 regular season games alongside his veteran leadership skills and helped the Fire reach the third spot in MLS Western Conference while being selected in the MLS All-Star Game.

The team also had the third best record in the entire league with 16-7-11. This came after the Fire finished on the last place of the standings in both 2015 and 2016. Given all this, it is only natural that the Chicago Fire fans are worried whether Schweinsteiger will return after his deal has expired. Well according to general manager Nelson Rodriguez, the team is close to finalizing the deal with the German legend.

We remain optimistic and we think we’re very close to finalizing his return,” – said Rodriguez. “I hope that Basti and his folks don’t see that as an attempt to negotiate publicly. … I’ve learned that until all the documents are signed nothing’s ever truly done, but I believe that he’ll be back.

The player himself recently stated that he wants to keep on playing soccer and confirmed the negotiations with the team.

I want to continue playing football,“- said the 33-year-old. “We are currently in talks. And I definitely want to continue playing football. I am always happy when I am out there on the pitch or working with my team in training.

Prior to joining Chicago Fire, Bastian Schweinsteiger spent almost his entire career with the German powerhouse Bayern Munich. He played in 342 games (45 goals) and won the German Bundesliga eight times and UEFA Champions League trophy once. He also briefly played for Manchester United before heading to MLS. Schweinsteiger also saw success with the German national team, winning the FIFA World Cup in 2014.

During his time with Fire, Schweinsteiger played 86 games in MLS and scored eight goals while contributing with 15 assists. He earned MLS All-Star honors in 2017 and 2019.
