The Chicago Bears have traded quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move clears the way for the Bears to draft a new signal-caller in the 2024 NFL Draft, where they hold the first overall pick.

In exchange for Fields, the Bears will get a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick, which will turn into a fourth-rounder if the former Ohio State product plays more than 51% percent of snaps next season.

The Bears drafted Fields with the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. In his three years with the franchise, Fields showed flashes of talent but failed to consistently play at a high level. He is 10−28 as a starter and has 6,674 passing yards, 64 passing touchdowns, and 40 interceptions as a pro while adding 2,220 yards and 14 TDs on the ground.

Moving on from Fields was considered a likely option for the Bears ever since they landed the first overall pick via the Carolina Panthers. The 2024 draft class contains several top-rated quarterback prospects, with USC’s Caleb Williams currently being favored to become the land in Chicago.

The Steelers, on the other hand, have now reshaped their QB room. After releasing backup Mitch Trubisky and letting third-stringer Mason Rudolph leave in free agency, the franchise also traded former first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week. Free-agent signing  Russell Wilson is now penciled in to be the starter in 2024, while Fields will serve as his backup and understudy.

When quarterback Justin Fields unfollowed his Chicago Bears on social media, many took it as a sign that he accepted the possibility of him being traded this offseason. However, Fields denied this in a recent appearance on St. Brown Brothers podcast, saying that he was just “trying to take a little break”.

The Bears are currently in possession of the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft thanks to last year’s trade with the Carolina Panthers. Many draft analysts project them taking USC’s quarterback Caleb Williams, who is perceived as a generational prospect, and moving on from Fields.

With rumors about his uncertain future growing louder in recent weeks, Fields added more fuel to the fire by unfollowing Browns on social media.

“Why do people take social media so serious?” Fields told hosts and fellow NFL players Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown when asked about his actions. “I’m just trying to take a little break. I unfollowed the Bears and the NFL. I’m not just trying to have football on my timeline. … I’m about to go on vacation, I don’t want to see no football.”

Fields later returned to the topic of his future and said that he can’t wait for the Bears to make a decision on his status for better or worse.

“If it was up to me, I would want to stay in Chicago. I love the city. The city’s lit. The fans are great,” Fields said. “The biggest thing is I just want it to be over. Let me know if I’m getting traded [or] let me know if I’m staying.”

Justin Fields wrapped up his third season with the Bears in 2023. He completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 2,562 passing yards while adding, and throwing 16 touchdowns and nine picks. Fields also added 657 yards and four TDs on the ground.

The Chicago Bears parted ways with a pair of veterans in safety Eddie Jackson and guard Cody Whitehair as the franchise looks to rebuild its roster and return to contention.

Jackson and Whitehair were among the longest-tenured players on the Bears rosters. By releasing them, the franchise saved $21.5 million against the salary cap for the next season.

Jackson was drafted by the Bears in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. During his time with the franchise, he made two Pro Bowls and received a First-team All-Pro selection in 2018. The 30-year-old played 12 games in 2023, finishing the campaign with 37 tackles, five passes defended and one interception.

Whitehair entered the league as the Bears’ second-round pick in the 2016 draft. He started all 16 games in his rookie season, earning himself a PFWA All-Rookie Team nod. Whitehair, who was a Pro Bowler in 2018, finishes his stint with the Bears having played 124 games, including 118 starts.

Considering their experience, Jackson and Whitehair shouldn’t have trouble attracting offers from other NFL teams. The Bears, on the other hand, will likely look to replace the duo in the 2024 Draft, where they hold two first-round selections, and through free agency, where they are armed with almost $70 million in cap space.

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury could return to the NFL next season. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kingsbury is one of the candidates for the position of offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

Schefter reports that Kingsbury will soon meet with the Bears’ brass for an interview. The 44-year-old coach spent the 2023 season in college football, serving as senior offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach with USC Trojans.

The Bears currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and could end up using it on USC’s quarterback Caleb Williams, who is considered the best player in the class. Having a familiar figure as his offensive coordinator would likely help Williams be more comfortable with the transition to the NFL, which is why hiring Kingsbury makes sense for Chicago.

Kingsbury coached the Cardinals for four seasons, posting a 28-37-1 record. He led the franchise to the playoffs in 2021, where they were eliminated in the NFC Wild Card Game by the Los Angeles Rams, who went on to win the Super Bowl that year.

After another disappointing campaign in 2023, which saw them finish 7-10 and have one of the worst passing offenses, the Bears decided to overhaul their offensive coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy was fired earlier in January, while four additional staff members on the offensive side of the ball left the franchise as well.

The Chicago Bears reportedly signed their kicker Cairo Santos to a new deal. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Santos received a four-year extension that ties him to the franchise through the 2027 NFL season.

Santos’ deal is worth $16 million and comes with $9.5 million in guaranteed money. The total value of the deal places him outside the Top 10 highest-paid kickers in the league but ranks fifth in terms of guarantees.

Santos entered the league in 2014 with the Kansas City Chiefs and has since spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tennessee Titans. He joined the Bears ahead of the 2020 season and had his most productive stretch as a pro since then.

The 32-year-old Brazil native is enjoying a career year in 2023, making 27 field goals out of 29 attempts and converting 92.3% of his extra points. He was also successful on all of his six FG attempts from 50 yards or more.

Santos was especially great in November when he made three 50+ yard field goals and delivered a game-winner in a 10-12 win over the Minnesota Vikings. This earned him the recognition of being the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Month.

The Las Vegas Raiders and the Chicago Bears matchup in Week 7 promises to be quite an intriguing game. According to reports, neither of the two teams will have their starting quarterbacks on the field and could instead have rookie signal-callers under center for the clash.

The Raiders’ starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, is dealing with a back injury that has caused him to miss the Week 6 win over the New England Patriots. The Las Vegas team played veteran Brian Hoyer against the Pats, but head coach Josh McDaniels could reportedly turn to rookie Aidan O’Connell against the Bears.

O’Connell, a fourth-round pick out of Purdue, has been electric in the preseason but struggled in Week 4 starts against the Las Vegas Raiders. He finished the Chargers game with 238 passing yards but threw one interception and fumbled the ball three times.

The Bears, on the other hand, ruled out starter Justin Fields due to a thumb injury on Friday. Instead of Fields, Chicago announced that they would start first-year quarterback Tyson Bagent. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Shepherd, Bagent saw some action in last week’s 13-19 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Entering the game instead of injured Fields, Bagent completed 71.4 percent of his passes while throwing for 83 yards and one interception.

The Raiders are currently riding a two-game win streak and are second in the AFC West with a 3-3 record. The Bears dead last in the NFC North with a 1-5 record.

The Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator Alan Williams is stepping down from his position. Williams resigned on Wednesday before confirming his decision via a statement released to the media.

The news comes after Williams didn’t travel with the rest of the team to Tampa Bay for a Week 2 game against the Buccaneers.

According to Williams, he will be “taking some time to address my health” but intends to return to coaching at some point.

“I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history,” Williams added.

Speaking about the vacant defensive coordinator spot, head coach Matt Eberflus hinted that he will look for Williams’ replacement in-house.

“Yeah, like I said before, we have (safeties coach) Andre Curtis, (secondary coach) Jon Hoke, all those guys that have great experience, guys that have been in our system, (linebackers coach Dave) Borgonzi, (assistant DBs coach David) Overstreet, all those guys are working diligently so we’re prepared and ready to go,” said Eberflus.

Alan Williams entered the NFL in 2001 as a defensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He joined the Indianapolis Colts the next year and spent a decade as defensive backs coach with the franchise. Williams later served as a defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings and also had a stint with the Lions.

Wideout Chase Claypool’s underwhelming performance in Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers might have jeopardized his status as a starter for the Chicago Bears.

Despite being expected to emerge as one of the primary offensive weapons for young quarterback Justin Fields, Claypool disappointed against the Packers. He was only targeted twice, failed to make a single reception, and didn’t do a great job in perimeter blocking.

In a chat with reporters on Wednesday, Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus reflected on Claypool’s struggles, saying that “perimeter blocking needed to improve for all of us.” He didn’t rule out making Claypool inactive for the Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a possibility when asked about it.

“We’re looking at all possibilities right now,” said Eberflus. “I’m not going to talk about who’s going to be up or down for the game right now, for obvious reasons. We’re looking at all things to make our team better—who’s going to be up and who’s going to be down in terms of the active roster.”

Claypool joined the Bears midway through the 2022 campaign from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a second-round pick (No. 32 in the 2023 NFL Draft). The Notre Dame product made 32 catches in eight starts with Chicago last season, finishing the campaign with 311 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The Chicago Bears bolstered their pass rush on Friday by adding free-agent defensive end Yannick Ngakoue.

The Bears officially announced the move on their social media but didn’t reveal the details of the agreement. According to multiple reports, Ngakoue inked a one-year deal that will see him earn up to $10.5 million in 2023.

The Bears were in dire need of pass-rush help after being one of the worst teams in terms of getting to the quarterback in 2022. Chicago had 20.0 sacks as a unit in all of the last season, with safety Jaquan Brisker being their leader in sacks with 4.0.

Adding Ngakoue will go a long way in making the Bears’ defense more dangerous for opposing quarterbacks. The 28-year-old had 9.5 sacks last season despite playing for a struggling Indianapolis Colts team and never had less than 8.0 sacks in a single year since entering the league in 2016.

“I just feel like it was a great fit,” Ngakoue said in a chat with Bears’ official website. “Going back to what this culture means here, just the history here, and also, it’s a great transition — easy transition — with my position coach and my defensive coordinator.”

After years of living in quarterback purgatory, the Carolina Panthers decided they had enough. The Panthers made a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Bears that will see them acquire the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and give them a chance to select their signal-caller of the future.

The Bears previously made it clear to the rest of the league that they were willing to trade the pick and then sat back to see who gave them the best offer. While the teams like the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts expressed interest, Carolina ended up coming through.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers are sending this year’s No. 9 and No. 61 picks, a 2024 first-round selection in 2024, a second-round pick in 2025, and star wideout DJ Moore to Chicago.

The trade represents a massive win for the Bears and their general manager Ryan Poles. The team was never going to select a quarterback, considering they believe Justin Fields is the future, especially after a promising 2022 campaign.

By making the trade with the Panthers, Chicago now replenished their draft chest that will help them put a competitive team around Fields while also getting him a No. 1 option at the wide position in Moore. In his five years in the league, Moore went past 1,000 receiving yards three times despite playing with eight different quarterbacks.

The Panthers, on the other hand, have been aggressively pursuing an upgrade on the QB position in recent years. They were involved in trade talks with Pro Bowlers Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson but couldn’t get the deal done. By getting the No. 1 pick, they can now solve their QB problem and select one of the signal-callers from a talented 2023 class.

While the Panthers are expected to take a good look at all options, most believe the team is leaning towards Ohio State’s C. J. Stroud.

J. Stroud.
