The Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator Alan Williams is stepping down from his position. Williams resigned on Wednesday before confirming his decision via a statement released to the media.

The news comes after Williams didn’t travel with the rest of the team to Tampa Bay for a Week 2 game against the Buccaneers.

According to Williams, he will be “taking some time to address my health” but intends to return to coaching at some point.

“I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history,” Williams added.

Speaking about the vacant defensive coordinator spot, head coach Matt Eberflus hinted that he will look for Williams’ replacement in-house.

“Yeah, like I said before, we have (safeties coach) Andre Curtis, (secondary coach) Jon Hoke, all those guys that have great experience, guys that have been in our system, (linebackers coach Dave) Borgonzi, (assistant DBs coach David) Overstreet, all those guys are working diligently so we’re prepared and ready to go,” said Eberflus.

Alan Williams entered the NFL in 2001 as a defensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He joined the Indianapolis Colts the next year and spent a decade as defensive backs coach with the franchise. Williams later served as a defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings and also had a stint with the Lions.

After years of living in quarterback purgatory, the Carolina Panthers decided they had enough. The Panthers made a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Bears that will see them acquire the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and give them a chance to select their signal-caller of the future.

The Bears previously made it clear to the rest of the league that they were willing to trade the pick and then sat back to see who gave them the best offer. While the teams like the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts expressed interest, Carolina ended up coming through.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers are sending this year’s No. 9 and No. 61 picks, a 2024 first-round selection in 2024, a second-round pick in 2025, and star wideout DJ Moore to Chicago.

The trade represents a massive win for the Bears and their general manager Ryan Poles. The team was never going to select a quarterback, considering they believe Justin Fields is the future, especially after a promising 2022 campaign.

By making the trade with the Panthers, Chicago now replenished their draft chest that will help them put a competitive team around Fields while also getting him a No. 1 option at the wide position in Moore. In his five years in the league, Moore went past 1,000 receiving yards three times despite playing with eight different quarterbacks.

The Panthers, on the other hand, have been aggressively pursuing an upgrade on the QB position in recent years. They were involved in trade talks with Pro Bowlers Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson but couldn’t get the deal done. By getting the No. 1 pick, they can now solve their QB problem and select one of the signal-callers from a talented 2023 class.

While the Panthers are expected to take a good look at all options, most believe the team is leaning towards Ohio State’s C. J. Stroud.

Chicago Bears President and CEO Ted Phillips announced on Friday that he will be stepping down from his role in the franchise at the conclusion of the 2022 season, thereby bringing a 40-year career to an end.

“I have been truly blessed with the honor of working for the Chicago Bears for 40 seasons and look forward to leading the team through the 2022 season,” Phillips announced in a statement released by the team. “I appreciate the support of the McCaskey family and to be involved in overseeing this amazing growth of the Chicago Bears through the years, is a dream come true.”

Phillips joined the Bears as the team’s controller back in September 1983, before being promoted to the position of director of finance four years later. In 1993, Phillips was named as the Bears’ vice president of operations—a position he held for six years until being named as the Bears’ president and CEO on February 10, 1993.

Lauded as a “financial expert” by Bears owner Virginia Halas McCaskey, Phillips has played an instrumental role in the franchise’s history, becoming only the fourth person to serve as president in the team’s 102-year existence.

Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus revealed that wide receiver N’Keal Harry will be sidelined for an unspecified amount of time after undergoing surgery on his left ankle on Thursday. This comes after he was injured while training with the rest of the squad on Saturday. Harry reportedly got his ankle wrapped up underneath linebacker Nicholas Morrow while running through the first play of team drills that day. Unable to put weight on his ankle after the incident, he was helped off the field by trainers and teammates.

This injury puts a major strain on the Bears at this position as Harry joins fellow wide receivers Byron Pringle and Velus Jones Jr. on the team’s injury list. Pringle is out indefinitely after suffering a quad injury while rookie Jones Jr. is currently classified as day-to-day, having missed the last week of training camp.

On the flip side, linebacker Roquan Smith has been removed physically unable to perform list after undergoing a physical on Wednesday. Still, the player decided not to attend practice after being cleared to play.

“He was cleared by our medical staff as healthy. He did not practice. And the reason why for that is, you’ll have to ask him. We expect all of our healthy players to practice, and that was his decision. Like I said, you’ll have to ask him. I have not talked to him about it,” Eberflus stated during a press conference. Smith handed in a trade request earlier this week.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot presented the Chicago Bears with three proposals for renovations to Soldier Field in an effort to entice the team to remain at the stadium. The team signed a $197.2 million purchase and sale agreement with Churchill Downs Inc. in September for a 326-acre property in Arlington Heights.

At the center of all three proposals is the construction of a domed stadium, which could cost between $900 million to $2.2 billion to construct. The first proposal involves completely enclosing the stadium with a dome by rebuilding both end zones with columns that will support the dome. The second proposal would see these construction efforts happen in order to simply make the stadium dome-ready. The final proposal would require modifications to be made to Soldier Field in order to transform it into a multipurpose stadium that would play host to soccer games as well as music concerts and other events.

Despite the mayor’s efforts, the Bears remain adamant that they will be relocating to a new stadium. “As part of our mutual agreement with the seller of that property, we are not pursuing alternative stadium deals or sites, including renovations to Soldier Field, while we are under contract,” the Bears confirmed in a public statement.

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy believes he still has time to make things right despite the chatter that he will be fired soon. Nagy talked about the possibility of losing his job during a press conference on Tuesday and labeled these reports as “not accurate.”

Media outlet The Patch recently published a story in which they claim that Nagy will be fired by Chicago following the team’s Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions. According to the report, which cites a top source close to the franchise, Nagy has already been informed about the decision on Monday.

Nagy, however, told reporters that he has “great communication with ownership” but that he didn’t talk with the Bears’ brass at all this week.

“We have not talked this week, and that was scheduled,” Nagy said. “We have constant communication—I always think it’s good and healthy—and we stayed on course with the bye week, and with the short turnaround with game prep, we have not (talked).”

The Bears currently have another disappointing season that sees them sitting third in the NFC North with a 3-7 record and almost zero chances to make the playoffs. The only reason they are not last is that the Lions are still searching for the first win in 2021.

But despite this, it is unlikely that the Bears opt to move from Nagy at this point of the season. The franchise never dismissed a head coach mid-season and is not expected to make such a move now. However, the offseason will be a whole other story.
