Celta Vigo is currently in 9th place in La Liga, looking to try to compete for a top-half finish and avoid the relegation worries that they have dealt with over the past two seasons.

One of the winter moves that they have now made in order to achieve that goal is the signing of Argentinian midfielder Augusto Solari.

Solari joins the Sky Blues from Racing Club de Avellaneda, where his contract was set to expire this summer. Celta will reportedly pay only $550,000 for his services due largely to his expiring contract.

The cousin of former La Liga great Santiago Solari, the 29-year-old player played a key role at Racing over the past couple of seasons.

At Celta, he will be reunited with his former coach Eduardo Coudet, where he was a key piece in their memorable 2019 campaign that ended with a Superliga title.

He is expected to play as a right midfielder for Celta and will provide Coudet with an option to switch things up at the position, where Brais Mendez has played the vast majority of minutes.

Solari will begin training with his new team this week and could debut on Sunday at Granada.

Just over a year after he joined La Liga’s Celta Vigo, head coach Oscar Garcia was sacked and became the first managerial casualty this season in Spain’s top flight.

The seasoned coach, who had previously been the head man at Olympiacos, St. Etienne, Red Bull Salzburg, and Watford, among other stops, was signed last November to replace Fran Escriba with Celta hovering around the relegation zone.

He managed to help the team climb out and avoid relegation by just a point, but underwhelmed with his inability to win games.

That frustration was put aside over the summer, when he signed a contract renewal with the club that was set to keep him there for the next two seasons.

However, after a hugely disappointing start to the 2020-21 season which saw Garcia win just 1 of 9 games, the decision was made that the team would not continue to see if he could turn things around.

Celta is currently in 17th place in La Liga once again, just one point above the drop zone.

The team is expected to announce its new coach in the next couple of days, with Argentinian manager Eduardo Coudet being mentioned as the best-positioned to take over.

Celta Vigo made an important addition to their squad on Wednesday, securing a one-year loan deal for Sampdoria defender Jeison Murillo.

Murillo, who spent the second half of last season playing with the Galician side, joined Celta after teams such as Valencia and Real Sociedad made pushes for the center-back in recent weeks.

The Colombian defender gained an important role at Celta during the second half of last season, starting 17 games and scoring a goal for the Sky Blues, who narrowly avoided relegation.

Murillo was a standout for Celta, but the team didn’t exercise its purchase option for the center-back, betting on the fact that they could once again secure a loan deal for him.

Celta does reportedly have another purchase option for Murillo at the end of this season-long loan deal, although financial deals of the option have not been made public.

The former Inter Milan and Granada center back is expected to be a starter in Celta’s defense as the team looks to get past its relegation woes and compete for a higher spot in the La Liga table this season.

Murillo is expected to join Celta in training next week after undergoing COVID-19 testing beforehand.

After narrowly escaping relegation in the final match of the La Liga season, Celta Vigo didn’t take long to announce their first summer signing.

Celta announced on Tuesday that they have signed Peruvian international defensive midfielder Renato Tapia to a four-year contract, which will keep him in Vigo through the 2023-24 season.

Tapia comes over on a free transfer after leaving Feyenoord in the Eredivisie at the end of the season after not renewing on a new deal with the Dutch side.

The 24-year-old player was a semi-regular starter for Feyenoord ever since joining the club in 2016. He spent the second half of the 2018-19 season on loan at Willem II, where he impressed.

Tapia’s best work has arguably come with his national team, where he has featured as a regular starter ever since making his debut with the Incas in 2015.

He was a key figure in Peru’s 2018 World Cup run, which saw the team qualify for the world’s premier international competition for the first time since 1982.

Tapia has scored 3 goals in 52 games for his national side, and compiled a total of 11 goals in 161 games while playing in the Netherlands.

He is expected to compete alongside Okay Yokuslu to anchor the back half of Celta’s midfield.

FC Barcelona drew with Celta Vigo in a 2-2 battle in Galicia on Saturday afternoon, further sinking the Blaugrana’s ever-dwindling title hopes.

Their loss, in combination with Real Madrid’s 1-0 win against Espanyol on Sunday night, means that the two-time reigning La Liga champions now trail their bitter foes by two points in the standings with six matches left to play.

Barcelona got out to a 0-1 lead just before the 20-minute mark of the match when Leo Messi made a brilliant free-kick assist to Luis Suarez, who headed the ball into the net.

They took their lead into halftime, however, Celta was able to tie it up in the 50th minute after a Fedor Smolov goal.

Luis Suarez, however, found the net again for his second goal on the day only 17 minutes later to score a goal that the Cules hoped would be all they needed to bring home 3 crucial points.

However, Celta forward Iago Aspas scored a brilliant curved free-kick goal that Marc Andre ter Stegen could do nothing to defend in the final minutes of the match, ensuring that Barcelona would go home with only a point.

Barcelona, which now trails Real Madrid by 2 points in the standings and would lose a theoretical tie-breaker, now has huge pressure to win out in its final 6 games in order to make a title push.

The race for the La Liga title in the 2019-20 season tightened up over the weekend, as Barcelona saw Real Madrid limp to a 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo after the Catalonians won their Saturday match against Getafe.

This allowed Barça, who came into the weekend trailing Real Madrid by three points in the standings, to cut Los Blancos’ advantage in the La Liga table to a single point.

Barcelona welcomed Getafe to the Camp Nou on Saturday and won despite a tough battle against third-ranked Getafe. Antoine Griezmann and Sergi Roberto scored to give the Blaugrana a 2-0 lead before halftime, and they managed to hold on for a 2-1 win despite Angel Rodriguez’s second-half goal.

Real Madrid was widely expected to beat Celta at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday night, but the plucky Galicians put up a fight and earned a point that allowed them to climb out of the relegation zone.

Celta surprised by taking a 1-0 lead after a Fedor Smolov shot beat Thibault Courtois in the seventh minute of the game.

Real Madrid came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second half after a Toni Kroos strike and a Sergio Ramos penalty and looked to be in the driver’s seat for the win.

However, Celta substitute Denis Suarez connected with another sub, Santi Mina, with a beautiful pass in the 85th minute which knotted the game at 2-2, where it stayed until the final whistle.

Real Madrid will look to maintain their advantage next weekend as they face Levante on the road, while Barcelona will look to keep up their good form and maintain pace as they welcome Eibar to the Camp Nou.

One of the Russian Premier League’s biggest stars has made a move to La Liga, joining Spanish side Celta Vigo on loan until the end of the 2019-20 season.

Celta Vigo came to an agreement with Lokomotiv Moscow on the penultimate day of the winter transfer window to bring Fedor Smolov to Galicia until the end of the season.

Smolov, a 29-year-old forward who joined Lokomotiv after scoring 64 goals in 101 games with FC Krasnodar from 2015 to 2018, found himself in and out of the starting lineup with the Russian heavyweights this season.

After a widely-praised summer in which Celta brought in talented players such as Denis Suarez, Santi Mina, and Rafinha, they have failed to score goals and live up to their billing as an up-and-coming La Liga squad.

They have managed to score only 17 goals in 21 matches this season, the second-lowest total in the league. Celta currently finds itself in 18th place, just below the relegation line.

Smolov, whose prolific goal-scoring abilities have been on display both with Krasnodar and the Russian national team, will look to become the goal scorer that Celta has lacked this season and to save the team from an unexpected relegation.

Celta Vigo, who has gotten off to a disappointing start after making high-profile summer signings, sacked head coach Fran Escribá after the team’s fourth consecutive loss on Sunday evening.

After announcing their former coach’s dismissal on Sunday after the 1-0 loss to Getafe concluded, they revealed former Brighton & Hove Albion, Olympiacos, and Red Bull Salzburg coach Òscar García as the next man to take the job.

The Galician club, who has managed only 9 points after the first 12 matches of the season, will look to Garcia’s new style as a welcome change after a dreadful first third of the year.

Celta, with players such as Denis Suarez, Rafinha, and Iago Aspas, has managed to score only 6 goals in their first 12 matches of the season. Escriba’s reliance on an overly-defensive scheme was ultimately what lead to his downfall in Vigo.

Garcia, who last coached Olympiacos at the end of the 2018 season, is a Barcelona product that played in La Liga for the Blaugrana, Valencia, Albacete, and Espanyol.

He started his coaching career at Maccabi Tel Aviv before moving to England, where he spent time at Brighton & Hove and Watford before spending two seasons with Red Bull Salzburg.

He has been without a job since leaving his positions at St. Eteinne and Olympiacos.

Celta currently finds itself in 18th place in La Liga and will look to escape the relegation zone with their new head man.

Olympique Lyon has decided to send out one of its youngest players on loan to gain experience at the club from which he was signed.

Celta Vigo, the La Liga outfit with which Cheikh was formed as a youth player and with which he made his professional debut, will acquire the 21-year-old midfielder on loan for the 2019-20 season. The Galician team will also have a $10 million purchase option if they want to retain the midfielder on a permanent deal after the season is over.

Cheikh was considered one of the top young prospects in European soccer in the summer of 2017 when he made the move from Celta to Lyon. The French outfit beat out other European giants such as Tottenham Hotspur for the Senegal-born player’s services.

Celta had been looking to add another player to its midfield going into the season, as they look to improve on a disappointing 2018-19 campaign that saw them finish in 17th in La Liga. Cheikh’s arrival means that Celta has signed three club youth products (Cheikh, Denis Suárez, and Santi Mina) in what has been an exciting summer transfer window for them.

Cheikh will now have the opportunity to grow and develop in Vigo, a place where he developed into one of the hottest young midfielders in the game.

After weeks of speculation and a heated battle involving Valencia and West Ham United, Uruguayan striker Maxi Gómez has finally found a new home.

Gómez traveled from his native country to Valencia on Thursday to complete a physical with Valencia and officially sign a new contract to join the Champions League club on a five-year deal.

Valencia acquired Gómez from Celta Vigo, where he spent the past two seasons, racking up a total of 31 goals and 10 assists with the Galician club in 71 games. What makes his performance even more impressive with Celta was the young age at which he produced, as he joined the La Liga club at only 21 years old.

Celta will reportedly receive Valencia forward Santi Mina and upwards of $15 million, along with a loan for center back Jorge Sáenz, as compensation for Gómez’s acquisition.

Valencia beat out Premier League side West Ham United for Gómez’s signature, as the prolific striker reportedly preferred the opportunity to participate in the Champions League and to remain in La Liga over West Ham’s higher money offer.

The soon-to-be 23-year-old is expected to slot into Valencia’s lineup immediately and become a key part of their offensive attack.
