After narrowly escaping relegation in the final match of the La Liga season, Celta Vigo didn’t take long to announce their first summer signing.

Celta announced on Tuesday that they have signed Peruvian international defensive midfielder Renato Tapia to a four-year contract, which will keep him in Vigo through the 2023-24 season.

Tapia comes over on a free transfer after leaving Feyenoord in the Eredivisie at the end of the season after not renewing on a new deal with the Dutch side.

The 24-year-old player was a semi-regular starter for Feyenoord ever since joining the club in 2016. He spent the second half of the 2018-19 season on loan at Willem II, where he impressed.

Tapia’s best work has arguably come with his national team, where he has featured as a regular starter ever since making his debut with the Incas in 2015.

He was a key figure in Peru’s 2018 World Cup run, which saw the team qualify for the world’s premier international competition for the first time since 1982.

Tapia has scored 3 goals in 52 games for his national side, and compiled a total of 11 goals in 161 games while playing in the Netherlands.

He is expected to compete alongside Okay Yokuslu to anchor the back half of Celta’s midfield.
