Reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs got themselves a new backup quarterback. According to multiple reports, the Chiefs have signed veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz on a one-year deal.

Wentz spent the first half of the 2023 NFL season unsigned before joining the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 to serve as a backup to Matthew Stafford. Wentz played in two games, including a start in the regular season finale against the San Francisco 49ers, and finished the campaign with 163 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one TD on the ground.

The Chiefs have been on the market for a new backup quarterback after Blaine Gabbert, who filled the role last year, became a free agent. In Wentz, they now get arguably the most accomplished backup in the QB position in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Carson Wentz entered the NFL in 2016 as the second overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. Wentz had a breakthrough season in 2017, putting himself in the NFL MVP conversation before a torn ACL in Week 14 ended his campaign.

The Los Angeles Rams have a deal in place with veteran quarterback Carson Wentz. According to multiple reports, Wentz will ink a contract until the end of the season to serve as Matthew Stafford’s backup.

The Rams brought in Wentz ahead of their bye week, wanting to give the 30-year-old player more time to study the playbook. In a corresponding move, the team waived Brett Rypien.

With Stafford dealing with a UCL sprain in his thumb, the Rams were forced to turn to Rypien for the Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers. The Boise State product had a disappointing outing, managing to complete just 46.4% of his passes while throwing for 130 yards and an interception.

The Rams hope that Stafford will recover in time for the Week 11 clash against the Seattle Seahawks. However, if that doesn’t turn out to be the case, Wentz likely gives them a much better chance of being competitive.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Commanders are giving up third-round selections in 2022 and 2023. The 2023 third-rounder could become a second-round pick if Washington plays Wentz on 70 percent or more of their offensive snaps.

The Colts, on the other hand, will give up a seven-round selection alongside Wentz. The two teams will also swap their second-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Colts acquired Carson Wentz last offseason from the Philadelphia Eagles, hoping the 29-year-old can get his career back on track after struggling for the past couple of years. But while Wentz delivered some promising performances in 2021, he failed to provide consistency on the position and was one of the main reasons why Indianapolis missed the playoffs in a spectacular fashion. The team announced on Friday that they have agreed to a four-year extension with Wentz, which will keep him with the franchise through 2024. The 26-year-old signal caller has two years left on his rookie deal.

According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Wentz’s deal is worth $128 million with $107.9 million guaranteed. He will receive $66 million as a signing bonus while having an opportunity to earn $16 million more through bonuses.

Eagles confirmed the deal on their official social media.

“I can’t even explain to you how excited I am right now to be a part of this great city for this many more years. It means the world to me.” – said Wentz in a video published on Twitter. “From the moment I got drafted here, I knew this place was special.”

Philadelphia’s head coach Doug Pederson told reporters on Friday that Wentz has a “stress fracture in his back,” that might require up to three months to fully heal. According to Pederson, the injury got worse in the recent weeks but won’t require a surgery.

“He has a stress injury, evolved over time and it requires no surgery,” – said Pederson. “[I’m not] answering any more questions about it. We’re playing the Rams in two days if you guys haven’t figured this out.“

It remains unknown whether the Eagles will opt to sideline Carson Wentz and let him heal. If that turns out to be the case, Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles will step in for him.

Wentz tore his ACL towards the end of the last season, and Foles replaced him in the best way possible. He led the Philadelphia through the playoffs and helped the team to win the Super Bowl trophy.

According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Wentz’s deal is worth $128 million with $107.9 million guaranteed. He will receive $66 million as a signing bonus while having an opportunity to earn $16 million more through bonuses.

Eagles confirmed the deal on their official social media.

In a move that came as a surprise to no one, Philadelphia Eagles decided to exercise the fifth-year option on quarterback Carson Wentz’s contract. This move will keep Wentz in Philadelphia through 2020 season.

Wentz is scheduled to earn $4.087 million in 2019, while his fifth-year option will earn him $22.783 million.

The move was confirmed on Eagles’ official social media.

Eagles took Carson Wentz second overall in 2016 NFL Draft and made him a starter in the first year. Wentz had a solid start of his professional career before embarking on a MVP-worthy run in 2017 when he led the team to 11 wins in 13 games. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in Week 14 game against Los Angeles Rams when he tore his ACL. This opened the door for his backup Nick Foles, who stepped in and took Philly to a Super Bowl win.

Wentz came back from injury in Week 3 of 2018 season, but failed to replicate his success and posted 5-6 record as the team’s starting QB before being shut for the season after Week 13 due to issues with a back injury. Foles stepped in once again and led the team to three straight wins that secured the Eagles an improbable playoff appearance.

Despite Carson Wentz’s struggles with injuries in his first three years with the organization, Philadelphia Eagles obviously still believe he is the franchise’s quarterback of the future. Besides exercising his fifth-year option, Eagles previously parted ways with Nick Foles, which once again made Wentz the undisputable No.1 option at QB position. It remains to be seen, however, whether he can stay healthy enough to enjoy it.

Wentz played 40 NFL games since coming to the league, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 10,152 yards and 70 touchdowns.

The 2017 Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles are facing another setback in their struggling 2018 season. Besides facing an uphill battle to qualify for playoffs after falling to a 6-7 record, Eagles have now lost their starting quarterback Carson Wentz to a back injury.

Philadelphia’s head coach Doug Pederson told reporters on Friday that Wentz has a “stress fracture in his back,” that might require up to three months to fully heal. According to Pederson, the injury got worse in the recent weeks but won’t require a surgery.

“He has a stress injury, evolved over time and it requires no surgery,” – said Pederson. “[I’m not] answering any more questions about it. We’re playing the Rams in two days if you guys haven’t figured this out.“

It remains unknown whether the Eagles will opt to sideline Carson Wentz and let him heal. If that turns out to be the case, Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles will step in for him.

Wentz tore his ACL towards the end of the last season, and Foles replaced him in the best way possible. He led the Philadelphia through the playoffs and helped the team to win the Super Bowl trophy.

Foles also started the season as Eagles’ starting QB, with Wentz not being fully recovered yet, and played two games in which he completed 65.9 percent of his passes for 451 yards and one touchdown while having one interception.

After Carson Wentz fully recovered, he took the starting job in Week 3. Although he had a statistically good season so far, Wentz struggled with consistency and Philadelphia didn’t win as many games as they would like as a result. He played 11 games, completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 3,074 yards and 21 touchdowns.
