The Los Angeles Rams have a deal in place with veteran quarterback Carson Wentz. According to multiple reports, Wentz will ink a contract until the end of the season to serve as Matthew Stafford’s backup.

The Rams brought in Wentz ahead of their bye week, wanting to give the 30-year-old player more time to study the playbook. In a corresponding move, the team waived Brett Rypien.

With Stafford dealing with a UCL sprain in his thumb, the Rams were forced to turn to Rypien for the Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers. The Boise State product had a disappointing outing, managing to complete just 46.4% of his passes while throwing for 130 yards and an interception.

The Rams hope that Stafford will recover in time for the Week 11 clash against the Seattle Seahawks. However, if that doesn’t turn out to be the case, Wentz likely gives them a much better chance of being competitive.

Carson Wentz entered the league in 2016 as a second-overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the same draft in which the Rams took Jarred Goff with the first overall pick. Wentz seemed on his way to stardom with an impressive start to the 2017 season that saw him play as an MVP candidate before suffering an ACL tear in Week 14.

Wentz would return from his injury in 2018 but has never reached the same level of play. He left the Eagles after the 2020 season and spent the past two years with the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders.
