The US Open announced the wild card invitation recipients for the 2023 tournament. The list is highlighted by two-time US Open champion Venus Williams and two-time US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki.

The 2023 US Open will be the 24th time that Williams plays at Flushing Meadows. She made her debut at the tournament in 1997, reaching the finals in her first attempt. The 43-year-old tennis legend won the US Open in 2000 and 2001 and had another finals appearance in 2002. She has a total of seven Grand Slam wins on her resume.

Wozniacki made the US Open finals in 2009 and 2014, losing to Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams, respectively. She retired from professional tennis after the 2020 Australian Open before making a comeback this summer.

Besides Williams and Wozniacki, the US Open sent out Women’s singles wild card invitations to Ashlyn Krueger, Robin Montgomery, Kayla Day, Clervie Ngounoue, Fiona Ferro, and Storm Hunter.

Men’s singles wild card invitation recipients are John Isner, Alex Michelsen, Michael Mmoh, Steve Johnson, Ethan Quinn, Learner Tien, Benjamin Bonzi, and Rinky Hijikata. Isner is the most prominent name on the list, having reached the quarterfinals at US Open twice in his career.

The 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 loss to Ons Jabeur in the third round of Australian Open 2020 didn’t just mark the end of Caroline Wozniacki’s participation at the first Grand Slam of the year. It also marked the end of Wozniacki’s professional career.

Back in 2019, Wozniacki announced she is retiring from tennis in 2020 and that the Australian Open would be her last tournament as a pro. It seemed fitting, as her only Grand Slam title was in Australia back in 2018. And while the 29-year-old had enough time to change her mind about retirement, that didn’t happen.

“I think it was only fitting that my last match would be a three-setter, a grinder and that I would finish my career with a forehand error,” said Wozniacki after the match. “Those are the things that I have been working on my whole career, and I guess this was just meant to be.”

Shortly after, Jabeur, who will face Wang Qiang in the fourth round, went on social media to pay her tributes to Wozniacki.

Since becoming a pro in 2005, Caroline Wozniacki won 30 titles and spent 71 weeks on top of WTA rankings. Besides the Australian Open title, Wozniacki has two US Open finals and two French Open quarterfinals.

We will have a new Australian Open champion this year. In a thrilling match of the round of 32, Maria Sharapova stunned the tournament’s defending champion Caroline Wozniacki and managed to advance to the fourth round with 6:4, 4:6, and 6:3 win.

Sharapova, who entered the tournament as 30th seed, opened the first set with confidence and showed that Wozniacki, who was the 3rd seed, won’t have an easy task in defending her title.

After losing the first set, Wozniacki bounced back in the second and won it 6:4 and even had 2:3 lead in the third. Still, Sharapova kept her composure in the deciding moments of the match and won four straight gems claiming a memorable win.

“I haven’t played many matches in the last year, especially against top players,” – said Sharapova after. “And these are the kinds of matches I train for.”

While Maria Sharapova won the Australian Open back in 2008 and made two more finals appearances in 2012 and 2015, she didn’t manage to get past the quarter finals since then. Her appearance in 2018 was especially underwhelming as she was eliminated by the third round.

This year, however, it looks like Sharapova is back to her Grand Slam form and that she might have what it takes to go all the way once again. In order to do so, she will have to overcome her next challenger, No.15 seed Australian Ashleigh Barty.

Ray Ferrero played at a club level where he scored more than 400 goals and picked up more than 500 assists. Together, they are hockey’s most successful couple.
