The Detroit Pistons’ hopes of improving on their disastrous 2022-23 campaign have been crushed in the worst possible way. The team’s best player, second-year guard Cade Cunningham, is set to undergo shin surgery that will rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Cunningham has been on the sidelines since early November. He initially had plans to return at some point this season, but his injury didn’t respond to the treatment as everyone expected. As a result, the Pistons and Cunningham decided the surgery was the best option as it would allow him to start the 2023-24 campaign fully healthy.

Cade Cunningham only played 12 games this season, averaging 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists. But despite good-looking numbers on the surface, the 21-year-old displayed growing pains that included shooting 27.9 percent behind the three-point line.

Cunningham was selected first overall by the Pistons in the 2021 NBA Draft. He led all rookies with 17.4 points per game in his debut year in the league while also adding 5.6 assists and 5.5 rebounds. The Oklahoma State University product finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting.

After Cunningham’s injury, it is expected that the Pistons will fully embrace the tanking mode once again. They have been the worst team in basketball this season, sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference with a 7-22 record.

There wasn’t much surprise on Wednesday when the league revealed the names of players who were selected to the 2022 NBA All-Rookie First Team. The list is highlighted by the 2022’s Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes (Toronto Raptors), who is joined by fellow ROTY finalists Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons’ Cade Cunningham. All three players received a maximum of 100 first-team votes and 200 points.

Barnes averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.1. steals in 74 games with Toronto this season. Mobley had 15.0 points per game and led all rookies with 8.3 rebounds on average, while Cunningham was first in scoring with 17.4 points per contest.

Orlando Magic’s Franz Wagner, with 84 first-team votes, and the Houston Rockets’ Jalen Green, with 54 first-team votes, also cracked the list of best rookies this past season. Wagner averaged 15.2 points in 79 games for Magic, while Green had 17.3 points per game.

The league also unveiled the players who made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. The list is highlighted by Herbert Jones (New Orleans Pelicans) and Josh Giddey (Oklahoma City Thunder), who received 32 and 24 first-team place votes, respectively. The Detroit Pistons may have recorded a tough 107-129 loss against the Sacramento Kings on Monday, but they can at least feel good about their future. The Pistons’ rookie guard Cade Cunningham had his best performance as a pro and even managed to make a bit of NBA history.

Cunningham, who was selected first overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, finished the night with a career-high 25 points. He added eight boards, eight assists, and two steals while shooting 10-of-20 from the game and making five out of his 11 three-point attempts.

Shortly after the game wrapped up, the Pistons announced on social media that Cunningham became the youngest player in NBA history to post a stat line of at least 25 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and five made threes. He did it while 20 years and 51 days old, beating out LA Lakers superstar LeBron James (20 years, 100 days), Atlanta Hawks All-Star Trae Young (20 years, 163 days), and Dallas Mavericks phenom Luka Doncic (20 years, 248 days).

Cade Cunningham struggled a lot with injuries early in his rookie campaign and is having a slower start than many predicted. In eight games he played so far in 2021-22, Cunningham is averaging 13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. His shooting numbers are more alarming, as he is only making 34.8 percent of his shots from the floor and connecting on just 27.6 percent of his shots from deep. However, this game was an optimistic change.
