If he doesn’t want to play in the Championship, the USMNT star midfielder Brenden Aaronson will have no trouble leaving Leeds United. This is thanks to Aaronson having a relegation release clause in his contract, which was recently reported by the soccer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The release clause kicked in after Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday. This means that any club wanting to sign Aaronson can now simply pay a fixed fee, and Leeds can’t prevent him from leaving if he chooses so.

According to Romano, Aaronson’s teammate and fellow American Weston McKennie will also leave. McKennie returns to Juventus after Leeds didn’t activate their option to turn the loan move into a permanent one.

Brenden Aaronson arrived in Leeds from RB Salzburg in a €32.84 million move this past summer. Aaronson played a strong campaign, appearing in all but two Premier League games and contributing two goals and three assists across all competitions.

It remains to be seen whether Aaronson will stick around in order to help Leeds get back to Premier League or will he opt to move on. The 22-year-old player is expected to have plenty of suitors in the latter case, with a move to another Premier League club or Bundesliga being the most likely option.

USMNT attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson will play in the Premier League next season after securing a move to Leeds United. Aaronson will be reunited with fellow American Jesse March, who currently serves as Leeds’ head coach. The duo previously worked together at FC Salzburg.

Leeds United confirmed Aaronson’s capture on Thursday but did not disclose financial terms on the deal. However, ESPN reports that Leeds paid $29.5 million for the 21-year-old player, who signed a contract until the summer of 2027.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be here at this historic club, I am really excited for the new season,” Aaronson said about the move. “We’re going to have a big next season, and I am really excited to be a part of it. I know the team is going to be up for it, so it is going to be an important season.”

Leeds tried to get Aaronson back in January but saw multiple bids rejected by Salzburg. The club maintained interest throughout the following months but waited until their Premier League status gets resolved before making another move. After United secured a stay in the top flight on the last day of the 2021-22 season, the front office immediately circled back to New Jersey native.

Brenden Aaronson made his name in MLS, where he played two seasons with the Philadelphia Union and was one of the club’s best players despite his young age. Aaronson earned MLS Best XI honors in 2020, which prompted Salzburg to pay close to $10 million with incentives for his service. He ended up playing 65 games in Austria and scored 13 goals.

Philadelphia Unions’ starlet Brenden Aaronson is heading to Europe. The 19-year-old USMNT midfielder agreed to join the Austrian side FC Red Bull Salzburg and will make a move following the end of the 2020 MLS season.

The transfer was speculated for some time now, but the holdup was in the fee that Union asked for their most-prized player. Salzburg eventually agreed to pay $6 million right away and $3 million based on incentives. With this, Aaronson broke the record as the most-expensive United States-based homegrown player in MLS history.

Reportedly, Union will also be entitled to 10 percent of any future move that Aaronson makes.

At Salzburg, Aaronson will be welcomed by fellow American Jesse Marsch, who serves as the club’s manager since 2019.

“I am looking forward to starting the next chapter of my career,” said Aaronson after the deal was made official. “As a young player I focus on growing my ability, and I have seen how Salzburg has developed so many incredible talents. The way they play football really suits my own style.”

Brenden Aaronson came through Union’s youth academy, joining the organization at 11 years old. He signed a homegrown contract with Philly in 2018 but waited for an additional year to make his debut in MLS.

Since then, Aaronson played 51 games as a pro and contributed with seven goals and five assists in the process. He also earned a call-up to the United States men’s national team and has one appearance to his name so far.
