Veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is having a rough 2021 NFL season, and his poor performances are a big reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently on a three-game losing streak. But despite this, the Steelers still do not have any intention to make a QB change.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin said that Roethlisberger still remains the right choice under center for the franchise.

“Absolutely,” Tomlin said after being asked if Roethlisberger is the best option at QB for this team. “What he does and what he’s done makes me really comfortable in saying that.”

So far in the season, Roethlisberger has struggled to be consistent, and this has caused major troubles for the Steelers’ offense. The 39-year-old superstar has 1,033 passing yards so far in the season on a 64.1 completion percentage but only managed to throw four touchdowns while turning over the ball five times.

Roethlisberger also frequently misses open receivers, which especially played a role in a recent loss to the Green Bay Packers. As ESPN points out, the veteran has a 36.3 QBR so far in the season and ranks fifth worse in the league behind four rookies.

As a result, the Steelers currently find themselves at the bottom of the AFC North standings with a 1-3 record.

Veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger wants to make another run with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021. And he’s willing to leave some money on the table to do so.

Speaking with The Athletic on Thursday, Roethlisberger said that he wants to “go one more year” and believes he can give the Steelers “a real chance and winning.”

“I want to do everything I can and made that very clear to them from the very beginning that it was my idea to basically help the team however I can this year,” said Roethlisberger.

The best way Roethlisberger can help Pittsburgh is by agreeing to restructure his deal, something he is well aware of: “I don’t care ’bout my pay at all this year!,” he added.

Under his current contract, Ben Roethlisberger would count $41.25 million against the Steelers cap in 2021. This isn’t a number that the franchise can afford, especially with several key players being up for an extension.

There are several ways Pittsburgh can avoid this massive hit.

The first one would see Roethlisberger retiring, which isn’t something that the player is thinking about strongly, according to his recent statements. The second one would see Steelers releasing Big Ben, which also isn’t a probable option since he’s considered a franchise legend and deserves a better send-off.

The most likely path that the franchise will take is approaching Roethlisberger with an offer for a restructured deal that would also come with a significantly lower salary. This way, the team would get financial relief, and the player would get one more year before eventually retiring.

“I think we’d like to see Ben back for another year if that can work,” said Steelers president Art Rooney in a separate interview. “But as we said, there’s a lot of work to be done if that can happen; there may need to be decisions on both ends for that to happen.”

Leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to a comeback win over Dallas Cowboys over the weekend seems to have been taken a toll on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

According to a recent report by NFL Networks’ Ian Rapoport, Roethlisberger injured both of his knees against the Cowboys. Fortunately, the 38-year-old QB reportedly avoided a major injury, but his status for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati Bengals remains up in the air.

Following tests done on Monday, Steelers are optimistic that Roethlisberger will manage to play, but the final decision will be made based on the player’s ability to practice during the weekend.

“Ben was able to go back into the game and finish the game,” said Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin when asked about Roethlisberger. “I’m sure there’ll be bumps and bruises associated with play.”

It would be a tough blow for the Steelers if Ben Roethlisberger can’t suit up against the Bengals, especially since the team is looking to stay perfect in 2020. Pittsburgh is currently 8-0 this season and remain the only unbeaten team in the NFL.

Roethlisberger, who missed the better part of last season with an elbow injury, is enjoying an impressive campaign so far. He is completing career-high 68.1 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,934 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2020.

There is a good chance that Pittsburgh Steelers will start the 2020 NFL season with Ben Roethlisberger under center. According to Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin, Roethlisberger is making progress in his rehab from an elbow injury, and the team is “extremely confident” that the veteran quarterback will be ready for the season opener.

Roethlisberger went down just two games into 2019 and was sidelined for the remainder of the season after undergoing right elbow surgery.  Luckily for Steelers, the 38-year-old’s recovery is going as planned, and he is making the final steps towards returning to action.

“As we sit here today, we’re extremely confident in his readiness. We’re enjoying the process that he’s going through right now,” said Tomlin during a chat with NFL Network on Thursday.

“He’s throwing on the rehab schedule, it’s going well and we fully anticipate him being ready to go for that opener,” he added.

In the absence of Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers surprisingly managed to remain competitive and were in the playoff hunt for the better part of the season. Still, the inconsistency of backups Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges cost them late in the year, and the team finished second in AFC North with 8-8 record.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense might welcome several new faces in the upcoming years but the man leading it will remain the same. Steelers announced on Wednesday that they have signed quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a two-year extension which will keep him with the organization through 2021.

Although Pittsburgh didn’t reveal the financial terms of the deal, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the extension is worth $68 million. The new contract has a $37.5 million signing bonus in store for Roethlisberger alongside $30 million injury guarantee. The 37-year-old QB was set to earn $12 million in 2019 according to his old deal.

“I am pleased to announce Ben Roethlisberger has been signed to a new three-year contract,” – said Steelers’ president Art Rooney II. “Ben is one of the most productive quarterbacks in NFL history, and he continued to climb the lists among the all-time passing leaders in the League last season. But I know Ben’s focus is on only one goal – to bring another Lombardi trophy back to Pittsburgh. We are excited to finalize this new contract that will keep him as a Steeler through the 2021 season.”

Despite the fact that Steelers’ didn’t make it to the playoffs, Ben Roethlisberger had a great individual season. He completed 67.0 of his passes for league-leading 5,129 yards alongside 34 touchdowns.

“I am grateful to the Rooneys and the Steelers organization for continuing to believe in me,” – said Roethlisberger in a statement. “It has always been a goal to play my entire career in Pittsburgh. This is home for me and my family, and we love this city. I am as excited to be a Steeler in year 16 as I was when they drafted me. They will get my absolute best.”

Pro Bowl running back Le’Veon Bell decided to swap Pittsburgh Steelers for New York Jets this summer and is ready to start a new chapter in his career. But before doing that, Bell took a look back on his time with the Steelers and a relationship with team’s quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated.

Since Antonio Brown, who forced a trade from Pittsburgh to Oakland Raiders this summer, criticized Roethlisberger for his on and off-the-field actions, SI asked Le’Veon Bell about his experience with the 37-year-old QB.

Responding to the question, Bell acknowledged that Ben Roethlisberger is a “great quarterback” but that he has certain preferences when it comes to throwing the ball and that he “wants to win his way.”

“The organization wants to win. Tomlin wants to win. Ben wants to win—but Ben wants to win his way, and that’s tough to play with.” – said Bell. “Ben won a Super Bowl, but he won when he was younger. Now he’s at this stage where he tries to control everything, and [the team] let him get there.

“So if I’m mad at a player and I’m not throwing him the ball—if I’m not throwing A.B. the ball and I’m giving JuJu [Smith-Schuster] all the shine or Jesse [James] or Vance [McDonald] or whoever it is, and you know consciously you’re making your other receiver mad but you don’t care—it’s hard to win that way.” – he added.

Asked whether Roethlisberger played a part in his desire to leave the Steelers, Bell said that it wasn’t the only factor but “yes, it was a factor.”

After six years with the Steelers, Le’Veon Bell decided to leave the franchise this summer as a free agent and has inked a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the New York Jets. The deal not only guarantees him $35 million, but it has also made him the highest paid RB in the league.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is getting a new contract. This was confirmed by Steelers’ president Art Rooney II, who said on Wednesday that the team already started talks with Roethlisberger and his agent about a new deal.

“We’ve already started talking to him and his representative about extending that contract,” – said Rooney during a conference call with Steelers Nation Unite members. “I think Ben has some good years left. I’d still say he’s close to being in the prime of his career.”

Rooney also expressed the belief that Roethlisberger, who will be 37 in March, can play for “several more years.”

“Now that we’re seeing quarterbacks around the league that are playing into their 40s, I’m not sure there’s any reason that Ben can’t play for several more years. We’re looking forward to that.” – he added.

Ben Roethlisberger currently has one more year left on his deal, which carries a base salary of $12 million. His current contract, however, would count $23.2 million against the cap, which might be another reason for why the Steelers want to sign their QB to a new deal.

Although Pittsburgh missed out on playoffs this season, Roethlisberger had one of his best years career-wise. He led the league in completed passes with 452 and passing yards with 5,129, both of which were career-highs.

Cincinnati Bengals’ Dre Kirkpatrick on Sunday called a penalty made against him in Bengals’ 28-21 loss to the Steelers ‘trash’ and remained defiant that the Bengals were better than the Steelers.

“We’re better than them,” Kirkpatrick said after the game. “They ain’t better than us, period. They ain’t better than us. We’re better than them. But they won, so my hat’s off to them. I’m going to be a team player. They went out there and they fought. They got the win. We got the loss.”

The Steelers won Sunday’s game in the most dramatic way. With 10 seconds to the game, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger lobbed a 31-yard pass to Antonio Brown who completed a touchdown to make it 28 scores to 21. The Steelers has grabbed winning points in Cincinnati three times with 14 seconds, 10 and zero seconds into the end of the game.

Although defiant about the loss, Kirkpatrick dismissed a penalty called against him as trash.

“Trash, I don’t even care if they fine me. Trash. Trash call….C’mon, man. Critical situation, man. They gotta be right on with that.”

The penalty gave Pittsburgh a down before Brown’s touchdown game the Steelers a win.

In spite of the loss, the Bengals rank above the Steelers in the AFC North Standings with four wins and two losses this season. The two teams will meet again in Pittsburgh in the finale of the regular season.

Pittsburgh Steelers recently caught football world off guard when they selected Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph with the 76th overall pick in 2018 NFL Draft. That immediately raised questions about the future of their starting QB Ben Roethlisberger, and whether the organization intends to make Rudolph his heir.

Roethlisberger doesn’t have any problems with that, but doesn’t see it happening anytime soon since he plans on playing for “three to five more years.”

Well, that’s fine. He can do that,” – Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Tuesday when speaking about the possibility that Rudolph will take over as the Steelers starting quarterback. “But I plan on playing for three to five more years, depending on how the line goes and staying healthy if I can stay healthy.

If he’s going to be their guy, that’s great, but in my perfect world it’s not going to be for a while.” – he added.

According to the Steelers, the organization didn’t intend to draft a quarterback at all but couldn’t pass on the opportunity to take Mason Rudolph, believing he isn’t any worse than the QBs taken in the first round. Rudolph ended his senior season at Oklahoma State passing for 4,553 yards and 35 touchdowns.

If we are to believe the numbers, there are no reasons for the Steelers to make the quarterback transition anytime soon. Ben Roethlisberger ended 2017 with 4,251 passing yards, his fifth NFL season where he passed for more than 4,000 yards. The 36-year-old completed 360 out of 561 passes and had 28 touchdowns alongside 14 interceptions. In the AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Roethlisberger faced the league’s top passing defense and still ended up with 469 passing yards and five touchdowns. Despite his monster game, Pittsburgh Steelers were eliminated, losing the game 42–45.
