2020 Olympic Women’s tennis champion Belinda Bencic will not be participating in the upcoming WTA tournaments in Madrid and Rome due to experiencing “discomfort” in her hip. These clay court tournaments are widely viewed as precursors to Roland Garros—the Grand Slam tournament that Bencic hopes to be fit to compete in.

Bencic explained that she first began feeling hip discomfort during the WTA Tour’s U.S. swing, which concluded when the Swiss player lost to Ons Jabeur in the final of the Charleston Open.

“I have some discomfort on my hip, which I struggled with during the U.S. swing as well, and need to take a little rest and recover to be back at 100% for Roland Garros,” Bencic posted on Instagram. “I will miss both tournaments dearly but will be back in a few weeks and can’t wait to be back competing soon and continuing in great form.”

Currently ranked 11 in the WTA world singles rankings, Bencic won the Adelaide International 2 title in January as well as the Abu Dhabi Open in February.

Swiss starlet Belinda Bencic showed that she is a force to be reckoned with in this year’s edition of the US Open after she defeated Mandy Minella in straight sets on court five in her first round of action.

Bencic, ranked 12th in the WTA Rankings, took the first set 6-3 after just 35 minutes of play. With the momentum swinging firmly in her favor, Bencic calmly wrapped up the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set.

While underdog Minella was unable to get an ace against the Swiss favorite, Bencic was able to serve an impressive five aces in what was a short match. She also showed enjoyed some smooth consistency. managing a winning streak of five consecutive games.

Bencic has steadily improved in her Grand Slams performances this year, making it to the round of 32 in each tournament. She also won the Dubai Open in February this year, defeating the likes of Petra Kvitova, Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep en route to the championship.

Bencic enjoyed a fine start to the calendar year with her Hopman Cup victory whereby she and partner Roger Federer grabbed victory for Switzerland against the German pairing of Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber. This match came down to the wire, with the final result being 4-0 1-4 4-3(4) in favor of the Swiss pair.

Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber 2-1 to win the Hop Cup for the second in year in a row.

In a repeat of the 2018 finals, Federer won his individual match against Zverev 6-4, 6-2 to put Switzerland ahead. Germany’s Kerber defeated Bencic 6-4, 7-6 to level the game. In the mixed doubles, the Swiss held off the Germans 4-0, 1-4, 4-3 to lift Switzerland’s fourth title in the competition.

“I’m happy I’m feeling this good and playing as well as I am,” Federer said. “It’s good to finish on a singles performance like this. I’m a bit surprised that the matches have gone as well as they have.”

Switzerland nearly lost the finals after wasting a point to tie the game 3-3 in the deciding third set. Zverev hit the net while serving, giving Switzerland the victory.

For the 20-time Grand Slam winner, Saturday’s title was his third for Switzerland. He won it with Bencic last year and this year and had already won it in 2001 while playing with Martina Hingis.

The Hopman Cup will reportedly be replaced with an ATP event starting the next year, meaning Switzerland’s win could be the last.

Roger Federer emerged victorious when he faced fellow tennis legend Serena Williams for the first time at the Australia Hopman Cup mixed doubles in the eve of the New Year.

Federer represented Switzerland alongside Belinda Bencic while Williams represented the US alongside Frances Tiafoe. In one of the most anticipated tennis matches, both Federer and Williams won their individual match ups against opponents Tiafoe and Bencic respectively.

In the mixed doubles, Switzerland controlled the match, winning both sets 4-2, 4-3 in front of a sellout crowd of 14,000 fans. After the match, the two legends heaped praise at each other.

“What a pleasure. What an honor,” Federer said. “It was nerve-wrecking, too. I thought, I’ve got to win this point but it is Serena Williams.”

Federer the talked about Williams’ famous serves and what he thought about them.

“People talk about her serve so much and I see why it is such a wonderful serve because you just can’t read it.”

Williams was also of complementary for her opponent.

“It was a great experience,” Williams said, “I’m sorry it had to finish; I was just warming up. It was such fun, we grew up together. It was super cool. I wanted to take pictures and bring my baby out.”

After the match, the 20-time (Federer) and 23-time (Williams) grand slam winners took a selfie to share online and keep memories of each other.
