Barcelona is yet to start looking for a successor to manager Xavi Hernandez, who previously announced his departure from the club at the end of the 2023-24 season. This was confirmed by the club’s sporting director, Deco, in a recent interview with Catalunya Radio.

Multiple reports in recent days indicated that Barca’s search for a new manager is already underway and that the La Liga giants have compiled a list of candidates that includes Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto de Zerbi, and Thomas Tuchel.

However, Deco stated that the reports were false and that “it’s not the time” to start looking for Xavi’s replacement.

“We don’t talk about that because we are not looking for a coach, it is not the time,” Deco said. “The season is not over. There is a lot we have ahead of us …. when the time comes we will make the right decision. It’s not the time.”

Xavi announced his intention to step down from his role as Barcelona’s manager in late January. At the time, Barca was going through a rough stretch, and there was increasing uncertainty about his future with the club.

Since then, Barcelona has been undefeated in six games while also recording four wins. They are currently sitting third in La Liga standings, two points behind second-placed Girona.

La Liga giants FC Barcelona are nearing another coaching change, according to multiple reports. Sources close to the club told ESPN that Barca brass is losing patience with manager Ronald Koeman and might be looking to replace him in the near future.

Koeman was on the verge of exiting the club during the offseason but ended up receiving a vote of confidence from president Joan Laporta. However, the 58-year-old Dutchman failed to justify that so far, with Barca delivering one unconvincing performance after another.

After a somewhat strong start of the 2021-22 season, Barca stumbled in the last four games and managed to get only one win. The slipups included 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League and 1-1 draw against Granada over the weekend, with the latter proving to be especially worrying for Laporta.

The only thing stopping the club from firing Koeman at the moment is the lack of alternatives, according to reports. The club isn’t interested in finding an interim solution and would like to replace Koeman with someone who can be part of the club’s long-term future.

Barca’s advisor Jordi Cruyff is believed to be pushing for Roberto Martinez, who currently helms the Belgium national team, while the club legend Xavi Hernandez is also among the candidates.

Ronald Koeman, who played for Barcelona between 1989 and 1995, took over the Catalan club in August 2019. He managed to win the 2020-21 Copa Del Rey during his time at Camp Nou while posting a 36-11-12 record.

Barcelona failed to defend La Liga title this season, but the team’s manager Quique Setien believes this won’t affect his job. In a recent chat with reporters, Setien said that he expects to coach the Catalan giant in 2020/21 as well.

Setien was appointed as Barca’s manager back in January, taking over from Ernesto Valverde. Although viewed as a great fit for the club at the time due to his coaching style, the Spaniard failed to bring major improvements to the team and is already on the hot seat.

Still, Setien believes he’ll get more time to see through his project.

“Of course, I see myself training Barca next season,” Setien told reporters. “I have already experienced this before.”

Barcelona was on top of La Liga when Setien took over but has since fallen behind Real Madrid due to some poor performances in recent games.

“The reality is that the expectations one has haven’t been achieved, or not yet, but the work done is what must be valued,” he added. “This is what I understand or what I would like to see assessed. Of course, I think about next year’s continuity.”

Club legend Xavi Hernandez was mentioned as the most likely candidate for Barcelona if they decide to move on from Setien after already being linked with the job in January. Xavi, who won eight La Liga titles with Barca as a player, is currently the manager of Qatar side Al-Sadd.

Although he is still not done with his career as a professional soccer player, Spain and Barcelona’s legend Xavi Hernandez is already preparing for his retirement. The 38-year-old, who is currently playing for Qatar’s Al Sadd, is working on getting his managerial licenses and hopes to obtain UEFA pro license next year, which would enable him to train any team.

I have a part [of the coaching licenses to be a manager],” – said Xavi about the process. “I still have one more year left to get the UEFA pro license to be able to coach the big clubs in Europe. Now, for example, I can train Qatar and in small countries, football-wise. At Barca I could train the youth team.

Xavi Hernandez’s ambition to coach in Europe immediately got people speculating that he could follow Pep Guardiola’s footsteps and return to Spain to coach Barcelona. As it turns out, Xavi can’t see himself in that role at the moment. This, of course, doesn’t mean that he won’t decide to pursue a coaching career at Nou Camp when he gets the feeling he is ready.

People go faster than what I think. It has always happened to me. When I was a player they talked about the new Guardiola, and I did not see that myself. I needed two-three years to see [myself playing in that role].” – he added. “Now it’s the same as a manager. I still don’t see myself as ready and prepared to do it. They say Xavi will be the future Barcelona manager, but we must be patient because I still don’t see it.

Xavi is considered one of the best midfielders of all time and ranks at the top as one of Spain’s most successful players. With Barcelona, he won 25 trophies including eight La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles. Playing for Spain men’s national team, he won FIFA World Cup in 2010 and UEFA European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
