Legendary Dutch winger Arjen Robben announced over the weekend that he is coming out of retirement and will play with his boyhood club FC Groningen next season.

In the past few months, it was rumored that Robben, who retired last summer, was considering a comeback with several MLS clubs and Brazilian side Botafogo being interested in his services. However, the 36-year-old ended up choosing the club where he started his career with the intention to help Groningen β€œin this difficult time.”

“The club can use all help in this difficult time,” said Robben. “I have thought a lot lately about what I can do to help the club.β€œ

Robben spent the majority of his youth career with Groningen and played two seasons with the organization as a pro. He left the club in 2002 to join Dutch powerhouse PSV Eindhoven.

“I am working on my comeback. If it will succeed, I don’t know. But won’t be about my motivation. It is my dream to play in the jersey of FC Groningen again,” he added.

Arjen Robben had an illustrious career as a pro and remains as one of the most decorated Dutch players in history in club competitions. He won close to 30 trophies with PSV, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, while also winning a number of individual achievements.

Robben also has 96 games and 37 goals scored with Netherland’s national team, with whom he was FIFA World Cup runner-up in 2010.

Former Bayern Munich star winger Arjen Robben announced the end of his illustrious career last summer, but it appears the 36-year-old Dutchman isn’t 100 percent sure this was the right decision. In a recent interview with Sport1, Robben said that he couldn’t rule out a possible comeback in the future.

Robben spent the recent few weeks training with Bayern’s team, which sparked rumors that he might suit up for Bundesliga giant once again.

“I have to disappoint you. My comeback at Bayern is a hundred percent impossible,” said Robben addressing these speculations.

When asked about the possibility of playing for another club, Robben was less decisive and didn’t rule out this scenario.

“You never know. I don’t want to say yes or no now,” he added.

There would definitely be an interest in Arjen Robben’s services, considering that he was viewed as one of the best wingers of his generation. Robben received offers to unretired even before this interview, with Brazilian powerhouse Botafogo openly expressing interest in signing him. The club’s vice president Ricardo Rotenberg even told the media that he had exploratory talks about the move with the player’s representatives.

Over the course of his career, Robben played with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich among other clubs. He left the biggest mark in Germany, where he won eight Bundesliga titles and one UEFA Champions League trophy.

Former Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben could make a surprising return to soccer. Brazilian media outlet Globo Esporte recently reported that Campeonato Brasileiro side Botafogo are trying to lure Robben out of retirement.

Robben retired following the end of 2018/19 season after his contract with Bundesliga giants expired. The 36-year-old had several offers on the table to continue playing, including some from MLS but decided to call it quits.

Still, Botafogo’s vice president Ricardo Rotenberg isn’t entirely convinced that Robben had completely lost the passion for soccer. Rotenberg told that the club made an approach to player’s representatives and are feeling positive about the outcome.

“For me, he was the best player at the 2014 World Cup,” Rotenberg told Globo Esporte. “Robben is my idol, a great player. There is always a risk if you haven’t played football for too long. But I tried, and he answered. He’s happy that Botafogo approached him.”

Arjen Robben retired as one of the most decorated players in Dutch history, having won Spanish La Liga, English Premier League, German Bundesliga, and Dutch Eredivisie. Robben was especially dominant in Germany, where he helped Bayern win eight national championships, including seven consecutive ones.  He also has a UEFA Champions League medal and has won several individual honors.

Robben was also a prominent part of the Netherlands’ national team, helping the country to win silver and bronze medals at FIFA World Cup. He played 96 times for the national side, scoring 37 goals.

Bayern Munich’s star winger Arjen Robben is reportedly more interested in joining Major League Soccer than heading to Italy’s Seria A. According to influential Italian website Calciomercato, Robben would prefer to continue his career in MLS despite the interest of Seria A giants Inter Milan who are keen to add him to their squad.

Robben already announced that he is leaving German Bundesliga at the end of the season after his contract with Bayern expires. The 35-year-old is currently sidelined with an injury and isn’t expected to return to the field before summer.

There are several MLS teams that would be interested in signing Arjen Robben in the summer with Toronto FC being considered the favorites. According to ESPN, Toronto already held “exploratory” talks with Robben but the team is currently focused on their league campaign and looking to pursue other targets before MLS transfer window closes on May 7th.

On the other hand, Inter is not discouraged by Robben’s preferences and have had several talks with his agent. The team is hoping that the appeal of European soccer and competing at the highest level will work in their favor against the player’s wish to play on a different continent.

Due to injuries, Arjen Robben only managed to play nine games in the Bundesliga this season in which he scored three goals. He also added four appearances and two goals in Champions League.

Dutch star winger Arjen Robben is leaving Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich at the end of this season. Robben, who spent 10 years with the team and 18 trophies during that time, announced his decision on Monday during a meet-and-greet with fan groups.

I can say that this is my last year [at Bayern] and it is good like that,” – Robben told reporters on Monday. “I have taken the decision, personally, that this will be my last year. I think it is the right moment after 10 years. The club moves on and I may move on. It is the end of a very good and long period.

This, however, doesn’t mean that the 34-year-old will stop playing soccer.

I may move on. I won’t stop completely yet,” – he added when asked whether this means his retirement from soccer.

According to reports, there are several destinations Arjen Robben is considering at the moment. He might consider a move to Major League Soccer, having stated on several occasions before that he would like to play in the United States. Another option for him is Japan’s J1 League, which already has several European soccer stars like Andres Iniesta and Fernando Torres.

During his illustrious career, Arjen Robben won national league titles with PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea, and Real Madrid but his greatest success came with Bayern Munich. Robben arrived at the club in 2009 and went on to play 305 games and score 143 games in all competitions. He won seven Bundesliga titles during that time alongside one Champions League trophy.

Major League Soccer might get another European soccer superstar in the summer. Bayern Munich’s winger Arjen Robben is strongly considering moving to MLS after his current one-year deal with the team expires. Playing in China and Qatar also seem like viable options for the 34-year old.

Robben was recently asked by Germany’s Sportbuzzer on whether he could see himself playing in the United States, China, or Qatar.

That’s exactly the current topic of conversation at my kitchen table at the moment when talking to friends and family,” – said Robben. “Now is the time that I have to make a decision. A few years ago, it was usually relatively straightforward but I am approaching the end [of my career] now and I have a lot to think about. It’s not easy but it’s also exciting. A lot is still open but I have already ruled out certain things in my head — but they are staying private.

If he decides to make a move to MLS, Robben would be welcomed by his former Bayern Munich teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, who is currently playing for Chicago Fire. One thing is for sure, Robben thinks he has plenty left to offer.

I’m still feeling very fit at the moment and believe I can still play for one or two years more at the highest level — that is my goal.” – he added.

During his professional career, Arjen Robben played for some of the biggest European teams including Chelsea and Real Madrid. However, his biggest success came in Germany where he won six Bundesliga and four DFB-Pokal trophies as well as UEFA Champions League in the 2012-2013 season. In 2017, he decided to retire from playing at the international level, after his Netherlands failed to qualify for 2018 World Cup. Robben has played 24 games for Bayern in all competitions this season, scoring on five occasions.
