Left-hand pitcher Jordan Montgomery, considered one of the top free agents in the 2024 class, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Montgomery will play on a $25 million salary next season. His agreement with the Diamondbacks also includes a vesting option for 2025 that could be worth up to $25 million.

Montgomery is coming off his best year as a pro. He started the 2023 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, making 21 starts, which included a 3.42 ERA and 108 strikeouts, before being traded to the Texas Rangers.

With the Rangers, Montgomery improved on the already promising campaign, having a 4-2 record with a 2.79 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 11 stars. His great performances carried over to the postseason, where he went 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA and helped the Rangers win the World Series against his new team. At the end of the season, Montgomery made the All-MLB Second Team.

After entering the free agency, Montgomery reportedly hoped to get a long-term deal worth “nine figures.” However, his market never materialized and he ended up taking a deal that would allow him to pursue a better contract in 2025 if he has another strong year.

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner is set to be sent back to Arizona to undergo a medical evaluation after he complained of arm fatigue, manager Torey Lovullo stated on Sunday. The left-hander began to experience fatigue during the Diamondbacks’ 1-10 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

“My mechanics were fine,” Bumgarner confirmed when speaking of his pitching performance against the Dodgers. “It was just one of those days you have during the year, and mine just happened to be the first one. It wasn’t like I went out there and threw the ball really well, but I was just one pitch away in the first of it being a completely different game. After that, it wasn’t bad.”

During the Dodgers game, Bumgarner allowed five runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in four innings. Despite this latest setback, Lovullo said that Bumgarner is not expected to miss out on any starts going forward.

Bumgarner is a four-time All-Star, going 134-122 with a 3.44 ERA in 358 career games with the San Francisco Giants and the Diamondbacks.

Free agent pitcher Zach Davies has agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, a source confirmed on Wednesday.

Davies spent the 2022 season with Arizona before becoming a free agent. Having built his career off of inducing soft contact and generating ground balls, Davies is largely expected to slot back into the rotation alongside Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Madison Bumgarner.

After signing a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the D-backs at the start of 2022, Davies finished the season with a 4.09 ERA in 27 starts. He ranked within the 75th percentile in average exit velocity.

From 2016 to 2021, Davies spent tenures with the Milwaukee Brewers, the San Diego Padres, and the Chicago Cubs. During this time, Davies clocked a 4.16 ERA over the course of 797⅔ innings.

Should Davies reach all of the conditions for his incentives, the starting pitcher could earn up to $8.25 million.

Even though the Arizona Diamondbacks are wrapping up what could be the worst season in franchise history, they still have faith that manager Torey Lovullo can turn things around eventually. The team announced on Thursday that Lovullo received a one-year extension that will keep him with the organization for 2022.

The announcement was made by Arizona’s general manager Mike Hazen in a chat with reporters and later confirmed via the team’s social media.

Hazen said that Lovullo was offered a new deal, that includes a team option for 2023, because the organization believes he did a good job despite a historically bad season.

“Through everything the season has presented, Torey did a good job of getting guys through this, even in a season where we might set a franchise-worst record,” Hazen said via ESPN.

Arizona Diamondbacks are currently sitting at 49-104 record and have lost 14 games out of the last 17 they played. Not counting the 2020 shortened season, the franchise’s worst campaign was in 2004 when they finished with a 51-111 record.

Torey Lovullo was hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of the 2017 MLB season, just several weeks after Hazen took over as general manager. The duo shared a connection after previously working together on different positions with the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox.

Lovullo led Arizona to an impressive 93-69 record in his first season with the franchise and helped the Diamondbacks reach the playoffs for the first time since 2011. The following two campaigns saw the team being above .500 before posting a 25-35 record in shortened 2020 MLB season.

The Miami Marlins surprised the baseball world on Monday just before the trade deadline, acquiring star outfielder Starling Marte in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Marte, a longtime fixture in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ outfield, joined Arizona over the winter after a trade took him to the desert. Despite spending only half a season with Arizona, he’s already on his way across the country again to South Florida.

The Dominican outfielder played only 16 games with Arizona this season, in which he hit .311 with 2 home runs and 5 stolen bases. After finding themselves out of the playoff picture and with only a $12.5 million club option left on his contract, they simply decided to move on despite his good work.

Arizona’s loss is Miami’s gain, as the team will acquire a center fielder who will help them make the push for their first playoff appearance since 2016. The Marlins currently find themselves at 15-15 and just on the edge of the expanded playoff picture, and Marte will certainly help them during the stretch run.

The Marlins’ newest acquisition will head to the Dbacks in exchange for lefty starter Caleb Smith as well as pitching prospects Humerto Mejia and Julio Frias.

Marte is expected to debut for the Marlins against the Blue Jays this week.

Arizona Diamondback made another important addition to their roster in an attempt to return to playoffs for the first time since 2017. The team recently announced that they have acquired outfielder Starling Marte in a trade with Pittsburgh Pirates.

As part of the trade, Diamondbacks sent pitcher prospect Brennan Malone and shortstop prospect Liover Peguero to Pittsburgh. Both Malone and Peguero are part of Arizona’s Top 30 prospects list. The Pirates also received $250,000 in international pool money.

Marte played 132 games with Pirates in 2019, hitting .295 with 23 home runs and 82 RBIs. The 31-year-old is owed $11.5 million in 2020, while his contract includes a $12.5 million club option in 2021.

“We think he’s a fantastic baseball player,” said Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen. “He has power, he can hit for average, he is a very good athlete, plays a very good outfield, center field as well.”

Starling Marte spent his entire career with Pirates, made his MLB debut in 2012. During his time in the league, he won two Gold Glove Awards and was an All-Star in 2016. Marte’s career stats include .287 batting average, 108 homers, and 420 RBIs.

Star free agent starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner has found a new home, signing a long-term deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks that will take him from one NL West franchise to another.

The durable, accomplished left-handed pitcher has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract worth $85 million with Arizona. After spending the first ten seasons of his career with San Francisco, Bumgarner didn’t go far to find his next home.

The Giants’ division rivals, the Diamondbacks, have secured one of the best deals of the offseason by inking their new accomplished starter. The money and number of years committed to Bumgarner are considered reasonable for a pitcher of his caliber.

Bumgarner is a four-time NL All Star and a three-time World Series champion with his former team. In addition, he is known for his acumen for playoff performance, owning the lowest ERA (0.25) by any starting pitcher in the World Series with more than 5 starts in the history of the sport.

The North Carolina native took a small step back in 2019, posting a 9-9 record with a 3.90 ERA that was well above his career mark of 3.13, reflecting the league’s inflated home run rate.

At the age of 30, however, Arizona is confident that their new ace has plenty of productive years left in the tank.

The Arizona Diamondbacks added a veteran reliever to its bullpen on Sunday, agreeing to terms for a contract with right-handed pitcher Junior Guerra.

Guerra, who was transitioned from a starting pitching to a reliever during the 2019 season with the Milwaukee Brewers, has signed a one-year contract that is reportedly worth $2.55 million, including a club option for a second year.

The Venezuela native was non-tendered by the Brewers at the end of this season despite a solid season in which he posted a 3.55 ERA in 72 appearances.

Guerra, who will turn 35 in January, will help to reinforce an Arizona bullpen that was middle of the pack last season. His MLB experience and durable arm will help to provide a reliable piece to a team that will look to compete for the playoffs for the first time since 2017 next season.

$2.55 million for an arm that has compiled a career 3.81 ERA with 383 strikeouts in 147 career appearances could end up being one of the better deals of the offseason if Guerra continues his consistent form while playing for his new NL West club.

Expect him to be one of manager Torey Lovullo’s preferred arms in the bullpen in the upcoming Arizona season.

The Arizona Diamondbacks made their first significant move of the offseason on Tuesday, signing free-agent catcher Stephen Vogt to a one-year contract that includes a vesting option for the 2021 season.

Vogt, who turned 35-years-old earlier this month, is an MLB veteran with ample experience behind the dish for various teams in the league. The California native began his career with the Tampa Bay Rays before spending several seasons with the Oakland Athletics, then passing through the Brewers and Giants organizations.

He spent last season with San Francisco in a part-time role. He caught 99 games for the team, posting solid offensive numbers. His .263 batting average, .314 on-base percentage, and 10 home runs made him an above-average offensive contributor at the position.

Vogt underwent shoulder surgery two years ago which caused him to miss the 2018 season. After undergoing the surgery, he found his ability to catch runners stealing diminished. This was one concern that teams faced when considering whether or not to sign him this offseason.

In any case, Vogt is expected to serve as at least a part-time starter for the Giants in the 2020 season. Financial terms and specifics of his contract were not immediately made public.
