The Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to keep Lourdes Gurriel Jr. with the team following his one-season stint in Arizona this year. The outfielder signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Diamondbacks, which includes an option for a fourth season. The deal also includes an opt-out for the second season.
During his year with the Diamondbacks, Gurriel enjoyed his best all-around season, hitting 261/.309/.463 and setting career-highs in home runs (24), games (145), and WAR (3.0). He also ranked second among left-fielders for saving 14 runs, proving to be strong defensively as well.
The younger brother of Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel, Lourdes was a high-profile prospect prior to rising to the major leagues. Before the 2017 season, the Toronto Blue Jays signed him on a seven-year, $22 million contract. Over the 2019 and 2020 seasons, Gurriel hit 31 home runs over 141 games.
