American tennis sensation Coco Gauff didn’t manage to get past the fourth round at this year’s Wimbledon. The 17-year-old star was eliminated by three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber on Monday.

Gauff has been impressive so far in the tournament, dealing with her previous opponents in straight sets. But Kerber and her experience in big matches was an obstacle she couldn’t overcome.

Kerber was better in the deciding moments, getting a narrow but deserved 6-4, 6-4 win. The 33-year-old German won four out of five break points she created while Gauff managed to convert only two of her own.

Gauff, who also reached the fourth round in 2019, admitted after the match that making better decisions down the stretch is something she needs to work on.

“I just need to do better on certain points, and certain moments in the match I have to notice when the momentum changes and how to react to when it changes,” she explained.

Still, Kerber was impressed with Gauff and told the media that the Atlanta-native has a great career ahead of herself: “Coco is such a great, talented young player,” Kerber added.

Angelique Kerber is now set to face No. 19-seeded Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals. Kerber is the only former champion left in the tournament, lifting the Wimbledon trophy back in 2018. She previously also won the US Open and Australian Open.

After a hard-fought battle lasting two hours and 22 minutes, 2016 US Open Women’s champion Angelique Kerber suffered a first-round defeat at the hands of Kristina Mladenovic.

Mladenovic, currently ranked 54 in the world rankings, took the first set 7-5 after a lengthy one hour and four minutes of play. While the German favorite bit back in the second set, sweeping aside the French underdog 6-0, Mladenovic clawed her way back against all odds to clinch the final set 6-4.

This result has summed up what a tough year it has been for Kerber. Currently ranked 14th in the WTA rankings, Kerber’s best result in a Grand Slam in 2019 was at the Australian Open, where she made it to the Round of 16.

This has been a significant decline since 2018 when Kerber won Wimbledon and made it to the semi-final of the Australian Open as well as the quarter-final of the French Open.

Kerber’s other achievements include Australian Open and US Open wins in 2016, which was the same year that she was crowned as the world’s number one WTA player.

Mladenovic’s career-high ranking of 10 came in October 2017- a feat she will look to replicate as she goes into the second round of the final grand slam of the year at Flushing Meadows.

On Tuesday we witnessed another major upset at US Open 2017. Last year’s US Open Women’s Singles champion, Germany’s Angelique Kerber has ended her journey to defend the title by being eliminated in the first round by Japan’s Naomi Osaka. On the WTA World Ranking, Kerber is ranked 6th but is on her way out of the top 10 for sure while Osaka is currently ranked 45th and will see an improvement in her ranking after US Open is completed. Kerber is the first defending champion in the last 12 years to be eliminated so early. Something like this didn’t happen since 2005 when Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Ekaterina Bychkova.

Majority of the matches on Tuesday were canceled because of the rain but the match between Kerber and Osaka was completed. It probably helped that the Japanese tennis player was swift and finished the job in 2 sets beating Kerber 6-3, 6-1. Kerber looked powerless while Osaka strolled through their 65-minutes match. This was also the first time that Osaka has managed to beat a top 10 tennis player.

Compared to the last year, when she was number one ranked female tennis player in the world, 2017 isn’t shaping well for Angelique Kerber. In 2016, besides US Open, she won the Australian Open as well and even managed to reach Wimbledon final. This year, Kerber suffered multiple blows, including elimination from the French Open where she was No. 1 seed. That was the first time in the tournament’s history that No. 1 seeded player was eliminated in the first round.

Now, 4 out of the top 10 seeded tennis players in woman’s singles are out of the US Open. The 9th seeded Venus Williams is pregnant and doesn’t participate in the tournament. The 2nd seeded Simona Halep was eliminated by Maria Sharapova while 7th seeded Johanna Konta suffered a defeat in her match against WTA 78th ranked Aleksandra Krunic.
