American tennis sensation Coco Gauff didn’t manage to get past the fourth round at this year’s Wimbledon. The 17-year-old star was eliminated by three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber on Monday.

Gauff has been impressive so far in the tournament, dealing with her previous opponents in straight sets. But Kerber and her experience in big matches was an obstacle she couldn’t overcome.

Kerber was better in the deciding moments, getting a narrow but deserved 6-4, 6-4 win. The 33-year-old German won four out of five break points she created while Gauff managed to convert only two of her own.

Gauff, who also reached the fourth round in 2019, admitted after the match that making better decisions down the stretch is something she needs to work on.

“I just need to do better on certain points, and certain moments in the match I have to notice when the momentum changes and how to react to when it changes,” she explained.

Still, Kerber was impressed with Gauff and told the media that the Atlanta-native has a great career ahead of herself: “Coco is such a great, talented young player,” Kerber added.

Angelique Kerber is now set to face No. 19-seeded Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals. Kerber is the only former champion left in the tournament, lifting the Wimbledon trophy back in 2018. She previously also won the US Open and Australian Open.
