Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray doesn’t see himself playing tennis for much longer. Speaking with reporters at the Dubai Tennis Championship earlier this week, Murray hinted that he is planning to retire at some point in 2024.

“I probably don’t have too long left, but I’ll do as best as I can these last few months,” said Murray after a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Denis Shapovalov in the first round of Dubai Tennis Championship.

According to Murray, he hasn’t lost his love for playing tennis but believes he can’t compete at the same level anymore.

“I still love competing and still love the game, but it gets harder and harder to compete the older you get, to keep your body fit and fresh,” he added.

The 2024 tennis season started poorly for Murray, as he lost his first four matches of the year. This included a straight-sets loss to Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the opening round of the Australian Open. At the time, he said there was a possibility it was his last appearance at the tournament.

Andy Murray was once considered to be among the best players in tennis, alongside Rodger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. He won the US Open in 2012 and followed that up with Wimbledon wins in 2013 and 2015. However, a series of injuries derailed Murray’s career, and he hasn’t made it past the third round of any Grand Slam tournament since 2017.

After entering this year’s U.S. Open as a wild-card, former world No.1 Andy Murray will take the same route for the 2020 French Open.

The tournament organizers handed out eight wild-card invitations into the men’s singles main draw, with Murray being the only non-French player to receive one. The non-French players in women’s singles to get invited were Wimbledon semi-finalist from 2010 Tsvetana Pironkova and Eugenie Bouchard, who has Wimbledon finals and French Open semi-finals appearance.

Murray, who has three career Grand Slams, struggled with injuries in recent years and was close to walking away from tennis for good at one point. This caused him to have a significant drop in rankings as he plummeted to No.129 ahead of US Open. After reaching the second round, in which he was eliminated by FelixAugerAliassime, the 33-year-old player improved to No.110, but that still wasn’t enough to enter the main draw at Roland Garros.

Andy Murray’s best result at the French Open was a Finals appearance in 2016 when he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets. Murray, who also has four semi-finals in Paris, hasn’t played the tournament since 2017.

Former world number one Andy Murray has returned to singles action after what has been a tumultuous time in his career. The Scottish former Grand Slam champion expressed his doubts over his ability to return to the top of men’s tennis, even stating that it would be “naive” and “silly” for him to think that he could pull off one such feat.

It was just last month that Murray admitted that he was lacking the physical endurance to even last on the court in an ATP Challenger event, and is now looking towards the ATP 250 tournament in Zhuhai, China to begin his rebuilding process.

In addition, Murray has plans to participate in the Beijing Open, which is historically more challenging than the Zhuhai Open and is expected to follow this tournament with the Shanghai Masters, where he is expected to be up against some of the world’s finest.

“I don’t know how far I’m going to be able to get now on my comeback,” Murray explained. “I don’t know how much improving I still have to do or if I’m going to be able to. I’m in no pain just now, so I might as well give it a shot and see how far I can go with the recovery. “

Andy Murray isn’t ready to walk away from tennis just yet. Murray, who is the former No.1 tennis player in the world, recently told reporters that he aims to compete in singles “at some stage this year,” following several doubles matches he is scheduled to play in the coming weeks.

Murray struggled with injuries and resulting pain for the previous two years and hinted at his possible retirement from the sport back in January. But, after hip surgery in January relieved him of pain, the 32-year-old Brit began plotting his return to competitive tennis.

“It’s baby steps just now,” – said Murray. “I’m feeling good, pretty much pain-free and enjoying just training, practicing, improving all the time just now.”

“I hope at some stage this year I would be able to get back to playing singles again,” – he added. “I’m not really interested in putting a time limit on it because I’m quite happy just now. So I don’t need to play singles after Wimbledon or at the US Open to — you know, enjoy doing what I’m doing just now.”

The last singles match Andy Murray had before the hiatus was the Australian Open first round match, which he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in five sets.

Murray will team up with Feliciano Lopez for the Queen’s Club tournament next week, and also plans to compete at Wimbledon in doubles.

Roger Federer is now 17-0 against Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny after defeating him in the US Open 2017 round of 64. Since 2000, Youzhny and Federer met 17 times, and the Russian never managed to beat the great Roger. But this time, he looked close. Roger Federer is struggling with the back injury and had played five sets against Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday. Youzhny also pushed Federer to five sets, and even 2-1 lead after the third set.

My preparation hasn’t been good at all here. I knew I was going to maybe struggle early on. Maybe I struggled more than I would have liked to. But I’m still in the draw, which gives me a chance.” – Federer said about his performance.

Win again Youzhny saw Federed extending his unbeatable run on Grand Slams in this year having won Australian Open and Wimbledon. He skipped the French Open. US Open 2017 was an opportunity for Federer to claim his 20th major title, but it looks like he is already in problems early in the tournament. Federer remained confident about his abilities and expressed a belief that he will manage to find his rhythm while as the tournament progresses. His next opponent is 31st seed Feliciano Lopez.

Top seeded Rafael Nadal also wasn’t as convincing against Japan’s Taro Daniel as expected. Nadal lost the first set 4-6 but picked up the pace in rest of the match with 6-3, 6-2, and 6-2. “It’s true that I didn’t play very well tonight but at the same time it’s true that I’m through to the next round, said Nadal after the match. Nadal will face Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer in the next round.

The 2nd seeded Andy Murray, withdraw from the tournament 24 hours after the draw was made, citing hip injury as the reason why. If he had quit the tournament day earlier, Roger Federer would be moved to 2nd seed and that would open a possibility for Federer – Nadal final. Since Murray waited on an extra day, Federer and Nadal are on course to meet in the semi-finals.
