It’s safe to say the New Orleans Saints didn’t open the 2020 NFL season the way they hoped. The Saints are currently 1-2 in the first three weeks and are riding a two-game losing streak, which caused many people to abandon projections that this is a Super Bowl contender.

New Orleans’ players are well aware of the chatter surrounding the team, but it appears they won’t let that bother them. According to their star running back Alvin Kamara, the Saints will soon prove doubters wrong.

“When you’re losing, it’s easy to point fingers, say this, and say that. But we’ll get back on track, and everybody will shut up,” said Kamara during a chat with reporters on Thursday.

There were several things that went wrong for the Saints in the last two games. For starters, they lost All-Pro wideout Michael Thomas in Week 1 to an ankle injury, while several other players dealt with minor issues as well. Their quarterback Drew Brees hasn’t been his usual self while the New Orleans’ secondary has been putting a surprisingly poor showing as well.

One thing that undoubtedly went well for the Saints, however, is Alvin Kamara’s play. Kamara has almost singlehandedly carried the team’s offense and has rushed for 153 yards while adding 27 catches for 285 receiving yards in 2020. The 25-year-old Pro Bowler also added six touchdowns to open the season.

Saints will have the opportunity to leave a better impression on Sunday when they face Detroit Lions.

New Orleans Saints’ Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara entered the 2020 NFL season with a new contract after all. The team announced over the weekend that they have inked Kamara to a five-year extension, which will keep him with the franchise through 2025.

The extension comes after a turbulent couple of weeks in which the relationship between player and the team seemed strained. Kamara missed several practices, reportedly sitting out in an attempt to force a new deal, while Saints went as far as considering trading the 25-year-old player.

However, things cooled down after a bit, and the two sides managed to hammer a new deal before the Week 1 kicked off. Prior to signing the extension, Kamara was entering the final year of his rookie deal that pays him $2.1 million in 2020.

Kamara’s five-year extension is reportedly worth $75 million and comes with $34.3 million in guarantees. He will earn $15 million per year, which makes puts him among the top three highest-paid RBs. Dallas Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott also averages $15 million annually while Carolina Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey remains the top earner at the position with a $16 million yearly salary.

Teams have been reluctant to shell out big money on running backs lately, considering that such deals ended up proving bad in the past. However, New Orleans Saints feel comfortable giving Alvin Kamara his payday as he is one of the best dual-threats in the game.

With the combination of size, speed, and awareness, Kamara excelled in both running and passing game since entering the league as a third-round pick out of Tennessee in 2017. He rushed for 2,408 and 27 touchdowns combined in the past three years, while also making 243 catches for 2,068 receiving yards and 10 TDs. On top of that, he also served as a returner.

Kamara has three consecutive Pro Bowl appearances and one Second-team All-Pro selection to his name.

After seeing several of his fellow running backs receive a contract extension this summer, it appears that New Orleans Saints’ Pro Bowler Alvin Kamara also wants one.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kamara has missed the last three days of practice, which was reportedly motivated by the 25-year-old player’s wish to get a new deal. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and will earn $2.1 million in 2020.

Missing practice represents a change of strategy for Kamara, as he was previously taking a patient approach to negotiations. Back in early August, he told the media that he isn’t focused on getting a new contract and added that “it’ll happen when it happens.”

It’s believed that Kamara would like to be one of the highest-paid backs in the league, aiming at a yearly-salary between $13 million and $16 million. Saints, on the other hand, want to keep this number as low as possible as they are set to face a tight budget once the salary cap dips down next year.

Alvin Kamara emerged as one of the best dual-threat RBs in the league since entering the league in 2017 as Saints’ third-round pick, making Pro Bowl in each of the past three seasons. However, he hasn’t been as productive in 2019, which is why New Orleans might be reluctant to commit big money to him.

After racking up 3,146 yards from scrimmage and 31 touchdowns in his first two seasons in the league, Kamara took a step down in the past year. He had 797 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns to go with a career-low 533 receiving yards and just one TD.
