Alejandro Pozuelo won’t be returning to MLS after all. The former MLS MVP winner opted to continue his career in Turkey, where he will play for Süper Lig side Konyaspor.

Turkish club confirmed the news last week, while Pozuelo made it official by posting a photo of himself in a Konyaspor jersey on social media. There are no details on the contract, but the reports indicate that the 31-year-old player signed a deal until the end of the 2022-23 season with an option to extend it if everything goes well.

Alejandro Pozuelo arrived in MLS in 2019 after signing as a Designated Player with Toronto FC. What followed was a dominant four-season run by the Spaniard that saw him win Landon Donovan MVP Award in 2020 and earn two MLS Best XI nods.

Toronto traded Pozuelo to Inter Miami midway through the 2022 season, and the veteran attacking midfielder didn’t waste time making an impact. He scored two goals and dished six assists in 12 games while helping Miami to its first playoff appearance.

While Inter expressed interest in retaining Pozuelo and sign him to a new deal in 2023, the player opted to leave as a free agent and return to Europe. He ended his MLS stint with 28 goals and 37 assists in 100 games.

If the recent reports are true, Inter Miami could soon make a significant addition to their roster.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Inter is close to adding former MLS MVP Alejandro Pozuelo, who is set to join in a trade with Toronto FC.

Reportedly, Inter will only have to part with $150,000 in allocation money to get Pozuelo in the building. The low price is probably the result of the fact that the 30-year-old is in the final year of his contract.

Pozuelo has a salary of $4.69 million in 2022, making him the fourth-highest paid player in the league. The trade clears a substantial amount of salary of Toronto FC’s books while also clearing out a Designated Player spot that could prove useful later on.

On the other hand, Inter gets one of the best players in MLS in recent years for a bargain price. Pozuelo’s addition will certainly help them get involved in the playoff picture in Eastern Conference and improve on the current no. 9 spot. Also, they will be in the leading position for Pozuelo when he becomes a free agent.

Pozuelo joined Toronto in 2019 after a spell with Belgium’s Genk. He went on to play 99 games in all competitions for the 2017’s MLS Cup champions, scoring 29 goals and adding 26 assists. The Spaniard was honored with the Landon Donovan MVP Award in 2020 and has two MLS Best XI nods.

After the departure of Sebastian Giovinco and Victor Vasquez, it looked like Toronto FC might have trouble staying competitive in the 2019 MLS season. This, however, took another turn on Sunday since the team announced that they have signed Genk’s midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo.

Pozuelo, who’s considered one of the best players in Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League, will join his new club as a Designated Player on March 18 in a transfer worth $10 million including incentives.

Rumors about Toronto FC’s interest for Alejandro Pozuelo started circling back in early January when Belgian media reported that the Canadian club enquired about the 27-year-old’s services. The report said that Toronto offered $10 million, but that Genk wanted more, which put the transfer in jeopardy. Belgian side obviously was eager to make a sale at the end, and ended up taking the original offer.

“Alejandro is an excellent player who has the ability to both create and score goals,” – said Toronto FC General Manager Ali Curtis in a statement.  “He is the best player on the best team in Belgium’s top division. Obviously, and for so many reasons, we would like him to join us now, but we look forward to his arrival on March 18.”

“We are very excited for the 2019 season, and adding another important piece to a group that already has a lot of quality only makes us stronger.” – he added.

Pozuelo started his career with La Liga side Betis, before embarking on stints with Swansea City and Rayo Vallecano. He joined Genk in 2015 and since then played 135 games for the club, managing to score 18 goals.

After Toronto FC parted ways with club legend Sebastian Giovinco, who ended up joining Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal last month, the team aggressively started searching for his replacement. And while it looked like U.S. international Terrence Boyd is the most probable candidate for that, another name came into play. According to MLS soccer’s Sam Stejskal, Toronto is now trying to acquire Spanish attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo from Genk.

Stejskal reports that Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant said that “a team from Canada” made an official offer for Pozuelo and that Genk asks at least $10 million for the services of the 27-year-old Spaniard.

Alejandro Pozuelo started his professional career in native Spain with Betis, where he played until 2013. After failing to get meaningful minutes in La Liga, he had stints with Swansea City and Rayo Vallecano, before joining Genk in 2015. Pozuelo played a total of 135 games in Belgium in all competitions and managed to score 18 goals.

While Alejandro Pozuelo certainly fits the type of player Toronto FC is currently looking for, this doesn’t mean that the team isn’t looking at other options as well. Toronto would like to acquire the Third Designated Player before the CONCACAF Champions League, and if negotiations with Genk turn out to be a hard bargain, they could easily turn to other targets.
